Draft (Lotteries)

I like the NFL draft formula. If a team is shit, a team is shit. They need help, and a good player will help them.

But isn't that unfair to the really bad teams who don't decide to tank at the end of the year and instead aim to please their fans? Plus the NFL has 16 games, the NBA 82. Teams have a much longer time to know when they're out of playoff contention and a much easier time to tank in the NBA than in the NFL.

I actually would have preferred if the NBA kept it's old format, before they made the switch to the weighted system in 93. For every team that missed the postseason, they each had a chance of obtaining the number one pick. Remember when Orlando was stacked in the mid-90's with Shaq and Penny Hardaway. That's how it happened, Orlando recieved consecutive number one picks. With this current format we may never see another young, great team like that.

Plus the one pinball system also eliminates tanking completely, since every team that misses the postseason realistically has a chance to get the top pick.

Do you really believe teams are tanking? GM's, maybe even coaches, may see benefits in losing, but do you actually think the players are out there trying to lose?

No. Which is why the good ones are on the bench.

Unfortunately, there were so many conspiracy theories floating around back in the one-envelope days that the NBA needed to make a change to shut some of the whiners up. I still remember the big fuss when the Knicks won the right to draft Patrick Ewing, everyone and their dog accused David Stern of rigging the lottery so the New York team could get the top player. Keeping the Knicks' envelope in a freezer so he could feel around for the cold envelope and shit like that. If they went back, it'd be more of the same, times ten whenever the Knicks win. Times 38 million because of the Internet.
