Isn't the fact that it's too different than the first three one of the reasons it's had more mixed reactions than before? There are maybe two songs on the record that sound patently like New Pornographers tracks. And I can't think of a single song in their entire catalogue that sounds remotely like "Go Places", "Unguided" or "Failsafe". The softer moments like the title track and "Adventures In Solitude" are absolutely lovely, there are about 4 tracks that bring the powerpop goodness ("My Rights Vs Yours", "All The Old Showstoppers", "All the Things that Go to Make Heaven And Earth", "Mutiny I Promise You"). On top of all those, you have 3 tracks of Dan Bejar crazy. I can't think of a more fun, eclectic record I heard in 2007.

I used to really like New Pornographers, but the last two albums have been shite. And now I don't really listen to the older stuff, I think I've just outgrown them. They seem quirky for the sake of it...and it's really having a detremental effect on the tunes on the past couple of releases.

I will say "Challengers" is a hell of a lot better than "Twin Cinema".

Guest Mr. Potato Head

Are any of the other Canadians here familiar with Helix?

They had a decent hit in the 80s with 'Rock You' (as well as a cover of 'Make Me Do Anything You Want'), and their latest single, "Get Up" (You don't need a reason/to party/so get up/get up) seems to be getting airplay, but I can't figure out if it's happening across the country, or just here because they've got local roots...
