Quantum of Solace

The title of Bond 22 has been officially revealed, and it's Quantum Of Solace. No, we have no idea what that means. But it is the title of an Ian Fleming short story in the 'For Your Eyes Only' collection.

The story is not really a Bond story, although he does appear in it. Here's the plot of the story - though it bears no resemblance at all to the film's plot, we're sure (Click here for what we learned on that earlier). Bond attends a dinner at Government House in Nassau, the Bahamas, with a boring group of guests. After dinner he makes an offensive remark to stimulate some conversation and is rewarded with a story from the Governor of the Bahamas, a tragic love story about two people worn down by bad decisions and life... one of whom turns out to be Bond's dull dinner companion! Moral of the story is, don't be superficial - even the dullest facade may hide interest.

So in short, it doesn't sound like a blockbuster, it's been described as being more of a thoughtful character study so we're guessing that they've lifted the title but nothing else. Especially in light of the fact that Marc Forster has said the film will be "jam-packed" with action, estimating there will be twice as much as Casino Royale.

Is this a good choice of title though? It's one of the few Fleming titles not already used in the franchise (Bond 22: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was probably too much to hope for) but it combines both impenetrability and uncatchiness, which makes it something of a tough sell. And there is a whiff of a Scott Bakula guest appearance about it, isn't there? Still, best of luck to them with it, and more Bond news as we get it.

It's absolutely dire, it sounds like the sub-title for the new Star Trek film. It'll probably be a good film, but the title just really let's it down, as it doesn't have the Bond vibe.

As said, it sounds like a middling and mediocre sci-fi title. It doesn't even make much sense anyways.

That said, it should be a great movie if Casino Royale is anything to go by. But they really should have given better thought to a title.

Mayhap *gasp* break with tradition and not use an Ian Fleming title.

It's a rubbish title but it will be referred to as "the new James Bond film" instead.

That bit about starting an hour after Casion Royal is very cool. I actually like that there will be continuity in these films, rather than just jumping straight into Bond in bed with a different woman, he might actually some actual progression towards being a whore.

License to Kill? That may not be derived from a title of a story but the concept is very much a defining element of James Bond. Goldeneye is from Fleming's estate in Jamaica. The World Is Not Enough as tenuous as it is is a translation of the Bond family motto.

Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day are the only ones without a connection to Fleming.

And quite frankly, both are leaps and bounds better than Quantum of Solace.

Regardless I mainly said that in light of the fact that the producers and crew of these recent two Bond movies have stated they want to return to his roots and more directly reflect Fleming's work. Titles including.

This one though is just stupid.

Eh, I'm not crazy about the title of the movie, but they have had worse. I'm more interested in details coming out about the movie, since I thought the first was (despite being VERY good) lacked a lot of action. The opening scene was awesome, and I thought really put over Daniel Craig as a legit action star in about ten minutes worth of filming, however after that, he really didn't do much to improve on that. I hope to see more of that style in the new flick

It's a crappy name, but you know somewhere in the trailer, someone (probably M) will explain what the "quantum of solace" means and thus the audience isn't entirely confused to death. That said, I probably need to see Casino Royale before this flick. And I'm also going in with mixed expectations, as I don't really like Marc Forster as a director despite his body of work.

Personally I don't care for the name, but it's not the name that I care about, it's the film itself, I went into the last film with generic expectations and came out thrilled better than a Bond ever has for me, I'm hoping this film can top this and really escalate everything we've seen.
