The Munsters trailer looks like it's a comedy sketch meant to make fun of the idea of Rob Zombie's The Munsters.

    Yikes.

Yeah, that didn't feel like an official trailer at all. Felt more like something Cracked or CollegeHumor would slap together.

  2. Cannot recommend X enough for fans of throwback horror. It's a love letter to Tobe Hooper, explicitly set in 1979 and filmed like it was made in 1979, putting the "porn" in nostalgia porn, but it's so much more besides. If you do check it out, be sure to stick through the credits.

My favorite film of the year thus far (though I have a Jordan Peele and a Robert Eggers coming up to hopefully contend).

  3. Been getting back into Indian films lately. A bunch of friends and I shared Singham with another friend who hadn't yet seen it. Watched K.G.F. Chapter 1 today, and it's pretty darn epic. Afterwards, it dawned on me that Bollywood (or just the larger film landscape of India) have done a much better job of adapting to the world-building, interconnected zeitgeist of Marvel than American studio rivals have. Of course, they have also had several decades of practice at producing big, four corner, tentpole films.

Full slate of season 13 movies:

      Reveal hidden contents
    • Santo in The Treasure of Dracula
    • Robot Wars
    • Beyond Atlantis
    • Munchie (and the way they were saying the name of this one in the host segments suggests that this one is real bad)
    • Doctor Mordrid
    • Demon Squad
    • Gamera vs. Jiger
    • The Batwoman
    • The Million Eyes of Sumuru (which was also riffed in the KTMA era of MST3K)
    • H.G. Wells' The Shape of Things to Come
    • The Mask 3D (not that The Mask)
    • The Bubble
    • The Christmas Dragon

    Spoiler

Beyond Atlantis has one of my favorite trailers of all time. "When will you mate?!!" I don't think I've ever seen anything so sleazy with zero nudity.

  5. I guess I don't quite know what "risks" people are expecting? WandaVision spent 6 of 9 of its episodes painstakingly recreating the evolution of the sitcom. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier went well out of its way to shed any alt-right misappropriation of Captain America and explored some of the darker themes from the comics. They're taking chances with formula and audience expectations in a way most corporate entities don't.

Have audiences been conditioned by things like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones (and Attitude Era RAW) to expect big swerves and dramatic character changes? That's been a criticism of comics for as long as I've been alive. Every now and again they'll try to modernize a facet of a character (Clark Kent as newscaster instead of newspaper reporter once newspapers stopped being a part of everyday life, Peter Parker as science teacher instead of student, etc.), but most of the core attributes and relationships remain static. Ed Brubaker made one of the best analogies I've read, that he desired to play with all the toys but put them back in the box when he was done so they were still viable for the next writer.

I think these shows (and films) are fine. They're not really groundbreaking, and most of them will eventually be as forgotten as Bulldog Drummond and Torchy, but fun enough to be worth the price of admission. They're certainly not the death of art or cinema or whatever.

EDIT - Not responding to anyone's specific stance. Just thought if I was going to give my two cents, might as well get full use of the soapbox and give five, especially in regards to the "death of art" nonsense that isn't really a thing here but practically everywhere else on Earth.

  6. Used for the closing credits of Sennentuntschi, a nasty little Swiss folk horror flick from 2010. The lyrics are strangely appropriate and all kinds of wrong. One of the heaviest things I've heard in a while, in multiple senses of the word.

Dust comes across my radar every now and again, and it feels like I rediscover them each time. Same with Pentagram.

I counted 14 new characters introduced in the film and 3 in the post-credit scenes, which is a huge amount to put on an audience even if it is necessary to both tell the backstory and drive the plot.

  8. All right, after having gone through about half of my collection I've found some decent mags and some pretty good mags in terms of both monetary value and actual significance (regardless of monetary value).

What's your top 5 in your collection ?

    * Captain America # 100 (1968), the change-over from Tales of Suspense into Cap having his own book and also the team-up with Black Panther that would lead to him replacing Cap in the Avengers

    * Cry for Dawn # 3 (1989) signed by Joe Monks and Joseph Michael Linsner back when they still spoke to one another

    * Conan Vol. 1 Limited Edition Hardcover (2005) signed by Kurt Busiek

    * The Walking Dead Vol. 1 Deluxe Slipcase Hardcover (2005)

    * Set of Preacher Vol. 1-9 Trade Paperbacks (1995), not particularly valuable, but very important to me

I used to have a lot more awesomeness, including Amazing Spider-Man # 300, X-Men # 13 (2nd appearance of the Juggernaut, bitch!), X-Men # 14 (1st appearance of the Sentinels), Uncanny X-Men # 201 (1st baby Cable), and a bunch of Golden Age Captain ("Shazam!") Marvels, but I sold them off when I had a chain of shops. Ah, well, no regrets.

I also share HttK's appreciation of 1970s Inhumans. I used to have that whole run and loved it. I'm a sucker for the more sci-fi elements of the Marvel Universe as opposed to capes punching bank robbers in the face.

  9. Also, I would like someone to explain to me how Roy Nelsons ground'n'pound is "laying on them" (them as in his opponents). Nelson did not lay on his opponents, he passed guard and stopped them via punches.

He did not stop them via punches. He stopped Kimbo via gut and the referee stopped the fight via unprotected powder-puff strikes. Kimbo didn't tap to strikes nor did he come up bloody. It was a TKO.

He then got past Justin Wren on a close decision. He hardly dominated that fight, though Wren wore himself out and was unlikely to win a third round had it gone to one. Still, the point stands that he didn't stop Wren via punches, just experience and cardio.

McSweeney fell prey to the giant gut and TKO. Sure, he was dazed by a big right, but McSweeney wasn't ground-n-pounded into submission. It was another "just enough to get the win" victory for Nelson.

This tactic didn't work on Schaub, who looked proper dangerous, so Nelson had to actually fire off a solid punch and lay his ass out, and that's really all I want from Roy. The Buddha belly crucifix really wouldn't work in any other weight class. If he's going to use it, then I want his opponents coming up looking like raw hamburger. He's exploiting a loophole of sorts, and good on him for knowing what it takes to win without actually cheating, but at the end of the day, televised sports are as much about sizzle and spectacle as about athletic achievement, and Nelson is never going to top my "must watch" list, let alone my "will pay to see" list.

On the Marcus Jones front, I think Big Baby is a class act, but he's got a glass jaw, and for someone of his size, that won't get him far. Maybe he'd be better suited for pro wrestling, where his solid work ethic and gentle nature can also be assets.

I think Kimbo is unfortunately not hungry enough for his card position. He seems concerned about protecting his reputation, while not yet legitimizing himself in the octagon. I sadly don't want to see young guys fed to Kimbo to make him seem legit, but I also don't want him to just get stepped on before he can develop. It's a real quandary.

  10. V which starts in November for 4 weeks but then gets put on Hiatus until March because ABC shut down production of the show for 6 or so weeks. I wouldn't get my hopes up on V being any good now Zero.

Not trying to threadjack as I found FlashForward to be rather excellent, but V looks atrocious.

The original mini was about a crusading reporter not willing to buy the government's official story and probing deeper. It was about the dangers of exchanging freedom for safety and would've been hella timely.

Instead, our protagonist is going to be a priest and our theme has morphed into faith vs. science, which is a strange stance to take given that this is supposed to be science fiction. I disapprove. (N)

  11. I just watched the first one, and thought it was quite a good movie. Not top 10 for me or as great as others may think, but I enjoyed it and thought the style of Willem Dafoe being inserted into the scenes he was describing, but not actually being there, was a nice touch. That said, I would very much like to see the sequel whenever it comes out, especially when most of the original cast will return.

Plus, John Bender is in it.

Yeah, I don't understand people's need for it to be either the greatest movie ever filmed or utter chum worthy of derision. It's a fun little indy gem, and while I won't rush out to see the sequel, I can see myself Netflixing it and not regretting it.

  12. I think there will be an eventual attempt at another Marvel Kids line or something, and some other Disneified Marvel...but the core of the company won't change, this new stuff will be *additional* to what we already like.

    MarvelSHSa.gif

Kids line? Pfft. I sincerely doubt it. :shifty:

  13. I'm hoping that, at some point within the next week, we'll hear two major announcements:

    1. Joe Quesada is fired as Marvel's EIC.

I have no idea why he'd be fired. There's a very strong argument that after Stan Lee himself, Joe has been the most successful EIC Marvel has ever had. He doesn't even have a New Universe fiasco under his reign like Shooter did. Marvel's growth in the past few years has been explosive, and don't forget that he inherited the creative keys to the kingdom with it on the brink of bankruptcy.

I think it pretty likely he'll retire sometime soon, as that has been bandied about for a while now, so he can concentrate on writing and drawing again. It'd be a hell of a way to go out.

  14. Interesting story, Unlike others, I enjoyed the trailer and will defintly give this a watch when it comes out. I mean come on, god as the enemy, evil angels AND grandmothers getting blown away with shotguns? Whats not to love?

My wife thinks this looks awesome. It's Tremors crossed with Demon Knight!
