SPURS BID FOR LENS MAN

Thursday 29th July 2004

Tottenham Hotspur are trying to find a financial agreement with French side Lens to sign attacker Olivier Thomert.

Spurs boss Jacques Santini is keen to add the Frenchman to his ranks, and will be even more desperate to sign him after Robbie Keane's injury blow.

The 24-year-old does not have the most experience in the world, but is highly rated back in France.

Lens want around €14 million for his services, but Spurs are reluctant to splash out so much on Thomert, and have proposed a deal worth €9 million.

Spurs officials will continue to try and negotiate with their French counterparts in order to find a way of bringing him to White Hart Lane.

The former Le Mans man says that he is excited by the news of Tottenham's interest, and would like to move to England.

"I have deep respect and gratitude for my club, the chairman and the Lens fans," said Thomert.

"But I have thought about it long and hard and, if I am a priority for a club, I am keen to go."

Marseille are also thought to be interested in Thomert but it is the Spurs move which appears to be closer to going through.

FINALLY...

Emerson deal done

Emerson saga is over, this afternoon (Tues. 27/07/04) deal was done with Roma, Emerson joins Juve for estimated 14 million Euros plus the player Matteo Brighi. Now call me a fool, but was it not Moggi saying that Juve would not pay no more than 9 million Euros plus a player. He always maintained that he would not budge from that...

Let’s hope that the surprise still has to arrive….

I've been waiting for that for a few weeks now and its finally a done deal. Cant wait to see him in action. Still like the guy said, I'm hoping thats not the surprise Capello was talking about. Sign a good striker and two good defenders and that's us ready for the season.

This could start the Vieira speculation going again. Real were apparently after Emerson for defensive midfield, but since he's gone to Juve they could go after Big Pat.

Yeah we've been in the chase for him with Madrid, but no one really takes us serious to be honest, yet they take Madrid serious. If Viera comes to Juve, I wont be complaining. Then again, I wont complain if he doesn't as we already have super Nedved :)

Edman deal agreed

We have agreed terms with FC Heerenveen for the signing of Swedish international defender Erik Edman.

Erik is currently undergoing a medical and the switch is subject to the agreement of personal terms.

The 25-year-old left-back joined the Dutch outfit in August 2001, after beginning his professional career at hometown club Helsingborgs in 1998.

Edman featured for Sweden in Euro 2004, playing in all three group games against Bulgaria, Italy and Denmark. He is not unfamiliar with two of our players - having come up against Jermain Defoe and Anthony Gardner when England travelled to Sweden for a friendly in March of this year.

Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven striker Edson Rolando Silva Sousa is attending a trial at the club and features in the squad for Saturday's friendly encounter against Nottingham Forest. He is joined for a trial period by Lens attacker Dagui Bakari.

Well it now seems as if Arnesen is finally bringing in some signing which are desperately needed. Hopefully they can settle in quickly and do the job.

Yeah, shame that Nedved and Vieria don't even play the same position..

Errr didn't I basically say that? Viera wont come to Juve because:

A)I doubt he would want to

B)We wouldn't really want to be forking out the cash when we don't really need him.

If it happened, then good. I cant see it happening though, which I couldn't care about. I'm more interested in getting someone else like Cannavaro with our money.

Emerson presented as a Juve player

Today officially Ferreira da Rosa Emerson was presented as a Juve player; he has signed a four year undisclosed contract, was asked what made him join Juve he replied that he wants to win, and the fact that Capello was there made his choice a little easier, then was asked about the fact that Totti said if ever he saw you he would not say hallo but just ignore you, Emerson few chosen words “who cares” “his choice”…

Just confirmation on the deal. Little interesting bit at the bottom too about Totti.

ADRIAN MUTU TO JUVE ? -- Unconfirmed reports that Adrian Mutu will be a Juventus player for the next 12 months

There are reports that Ioan Bacali, the player's agent, has told the Romanian Press that ADRIAN MUTU will go on loan for 12 months to Juventus.

It appears that Adrian has already left for Italy to sign the agreement tomorrow. If this is true, Adrian, who has played in Italy since 1999 for Verona, Parma should qualify to play for Juve in the Champions League.

Adrian Mutu, who after a brilliant start with Chelsea, suffered niggling injuries and loss of form was out of favour with the new Chelsea manager Jose` Mourinho.

Chelsea wont really need or want him so I'm nearly certain it is happening. I'm actually happy with this. I thought he wasn't too bad at Chelsea last season for a player who just came out of the blue that I'd never heard off. I honestly think he can play well alongside someone like Del Piero, so a definate thumbs up to this deal and to Chelsea for letting it happen

So if we're meant to have 4 strikers (at least according to Mourinho's 2 players per position doctrine) - and we've loaned out Mutu, Crespo, Forssell and Cole - that leaves us with, what...

Kezman

Gudjohnson

Drogba

...

Oliveira? Please tell me I'm missing something here...

And I drag this thread back up because it's still the pre-season...just.

Vieira stays at Arsenal

Patrick Vieira will stay at Arsenal after rejecting a move to Real Madrid.

Vieira was thought to be on the brink of a £23m move to The Bernabeu, but has revealed: "The ties that I have here were too strong for me to break.

"I'm staying at the club. I'm proud to be captain of the club and I'm looking forward to achieving my ambitions."

The 28-year-old Arsenal captain's decision will provide a massive boost to Arsene Wenger's champions on the eve of the new Premiership campaign.

Arsenal said in a statement: "Naturally the club is delighted that Patrick Vieira has reaffirmed his commitment to Arsenal.

"As most people are aware, Patrick has spent much of the summer considering his future.

"Whilst we understood Patrick's quandary, our position throughout has remained the same. We are a club driven by success on the pitch and that means we do not seek to sell our best players.

"Arsene Wenger has assembled a highly-talented squad of players with the ambition of winning every major honour the game has on offer.

"Patrick is pivotal to that objective and it has always been our desire for him to stay here at Arsenal.

"We now look forward to Patrick captaining the team to further glory over the coming seasons.

"On a final note, we wish to state that despite any suggestions to the contrary, Real Madrid have acted properly throughout this uncertain period."

Vieira had looked destined for the Bernabeu, but late hitches scuppered the deal and he will now stay on at Highbury.

There was confusion about what had delayed the deal, with reports of differences over personal terms and the fee to be paid by Real.

But the deal is now dead after Vieira's decision to publicly pledge his future to Arsenal.

Wenger had given Vieira a deadline of Sunday to make up his mind about his future, and the French talisman has delivered the verdict Arsenal wanted.

"I've spent the summer considering my future and a possible move to Real Madrid, but my love for Arsenal and the ties which I have here were too strong for me to break."

Real will press ahead with their proposed move for Liverpool's Michael Owen.

Well, there you are. At least it's settled...for now.

And on the note of the last sentence in that article...

Owen to sign for Real

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed striker Michael Owen will move to Real Madrid.

The deal is believed to involve Liverpool receiving £8m for Owen plus midfielder Antonio Nunez from Real.

"When I came here he (Owen) had one year left on his contract," said Benitez, who took over as manager at Anfield during the summer.

"Real Madrid knew that, and when a big club like them come knocking you cannot control it."

He added: "I now have three strikers. It's bad that Michael's gone but we have three very good forwards and I'll be looking for a solution in the future."

Real Madrid have signed Jonathan Woodgate from Newcastle for £13.4m.

There had been concerns the 24-year-old defender, sidelined with a thigh injury since April, would not pass his medical at the Bernabeu on Friday.

But the centre-back, who played in 37 out of 128 possible games during his time at Newcastle, has signed a four-year contract with Real.

Woodgate, expected to earn £80,000 per week, joins England team-mates David Beckham and Michael Owen at the club.

Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson admitted he could not blame the player for accepting the move.

"I don't blame Jonathan in a way because he's going to arguably the biggest club in the world, I think, at this moment," said the Magpies boss.

"The power of Figo and Ronaldo, Zidane, then Beckham and now Owen. If you were in his shoes, what would you do?

"This is an extreme, exceptional offer which basically we had to take.

"No-one is pleased that he's gone because we know what we've lost. At his best, he's the best in the country."

A Newcastle spokesman confirmed: "Newcastle United and Real Madrid wish to announce that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Jonathan Woodgate.

"The player passed his medical examination and will join Real Madrid on a four-year contract, plus an optional one year."

Leeds would not stand to make any money from the deal, as BBC Sport can confirm they did not negotiate a sell-on clause when they sold Woodgate.

Injury-prone Woodgate suffered various injuries during his time at Newcastle after joining from Leeds in January 2003.

The player arrived in Madrid on a flight from Munich where he had a consultation with a German specialist over the thigh injury which has kept him out of action since April.

But Real Madrid appear convinced the problem will clear up and coach Jose Antonio Camacho has brought in Woodgate, as well as Roma's Walter Samuel, to bolster his defence.

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd said the deal was completed from start to finish very quickly.

"Real Madrid called us on Monday with an offer for Jonathan, and since then the transfer has followed the normal course of any deal," Shepherd told the club's official website.

"The first we knew of any interest was when Madrid's representative called us on Monday. To suggest otherwise is complete rubbish, and it's certainly not about the money.

"We did not want Jonathan to leave Newcastle United, but you have to look at it from both sides. Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world - that's a fact.

"Jonathan has said that Real Madrid would have been the only club he'd have left Newcastle United for - he certainly wouldn't have joined another Premiership club."

Zlatan signs for 4 years.... -- Is this the of the market or is there anything else to come??????

Replacing the previous news item, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a Juve player today at about 13.00 gmt has signed a four year deal with Juve, again it’s not yet clear the market value of the player, but from 15 to 25 million euros, has now gone down to 15 to 19 million euros, we will have to wait and see how much… in the last 24 hours, we’ve gone from who’s coming to who has actually come, and you can never be surprised of any of Moggi’s deals, actually I have to say that there’s still 4 hours left in the market to sign anyone else, as the market shuts its doors at 19.00, and could it be Jankulovski the next signing, as the player refused to leave for the Russian team CSKA Moscow, saying that he wanted to remain in Seria A, so don’t be surprised…..

A little about the new arrivals...

Fabio Cannavaro, born in Naples, on the 13th of September 1973, plays as a central defender, he made his first Seria A appearance on the 7th of March 1993 against none other than Juve, and subsequently lost that game 4-3, Made his first appearance in the national side on the 22nd of January 97 against Northern Ireland and was on the winning side 2-0, played a total of 80 games and scored once for Italy, his Seria A carer goes like so, 92/95 Napoli played a total of 58 times and scored 1 goal, then moved to Parma from 95/02 were he made a total 212 appearances and scored 5 times, after that moved to Inter till now were in two seasons made 53 appearances and scored twice….

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, born in Malmoe on the 3rd of October 1981, plays as a striker, he started with Malmoe in 98/01 were he played for 40 games and scored 16 times, then from 2001 till now moved to Ajax were he played a total of 71 games and scored 32 times, granted that the Dutch league is not as strong defensively than the Italian league, but he could still be worth a good 10 to 15 goals a season….

A bit off late news, is that Fiorentina have made a bid for Fabrizio Miccoli, as it looks like the Mutu affair has failed them, they are looking at Juve and thinking that the fact they bought another striker, wont need Miccoli any longer, Juve should give them a striker, yes Marcello Zalayeta why not he wont feature much any longer
