A Question About Songs

"Autobahn" by Kraftwerk is 22:43 is one of my alltime favourite songs, it's more about quality over length, for that reason I have no problem listening to long songs, there are plenty of 3:00 songs that would'nt hold my attention.

It depends on the lyrics. I like music with lyrics. When the band just plays their instuments for like 2 minutes without having any words it shits me.

So in short if there is singing the whole way through I like long songs, if it is just mainly music with occasional singing I don't like it.

Eh, since I started this topic, I'll suggest some songs because I'm bored, and maybe some people will check some of these songs out.

The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini [31:42]

The Mars Volta - Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore [13:15]

The Mars Volta - L'Via L'Viaquez [12:27]

Pink Floyd - Echoes [23:28]

Slipknot - IOWA [15:05]

The Melvins ft. Tool - Divorced [14:43]

Tool - Third Eye [13:45]

Tool - Pushit [9:54]

Just started getting into Dream Theater, long songs are awesome so long as they go somewhere. If it's just repeating a single riff the whole time, it' just dull.

And who can forget the song that nearly killed Mrs. Glick in the simpsons, "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly, 17.02

Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner (13.36), Dream Theater - Home (12.53) are also two of my longer tracks on iTunes.

It depends... I hate shit like 25 minute techno songs that are just the same damn beat over and over. And some jam bands just shouldn't be jam bands, Incubus coming to mind when I say that. Their songs aren't that great to begin with, but when they turn a 3 minute song into a 20 minute song, I wanna blow my fucking brains out. But by that same token, I hate when radio trims down long songs. So really, it just depends.

One that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet is the full version of Pink Floyd's "Shine on You Crazy Diamond". I'm talking parts 1-9 back-to-back. A good 25-30 minutes there.

Another good jazz one I've heard is a band called Addison Groove Project doing a jam of Watermelon Man --> Pass the Peas. Awesome traditional jazz jam that lasted about 30 minutes.

I absolutely love jam bands who go out with 4-7 minute songs on a record and turn them into 15-45-75-90 (yes, I have seen a 90-minute jam before) minute jam sessions using three, four, seven songs.

- Bob Dlyan 'Like A Rolling Stone (MTV Unplugged Version)'

- AC/DC 'Jailbreak' (Jam Version)

- AC/DC 'Let There Be Rock' (Jam Version)

- Jimi Hendrix 'Voodoo Chile'

- Jimi Hendrix '1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)'

- Led Zeppelin 'In My Time Of Dying' (Live Version)

- Led Zeppelin 'No Quater' (Live Version)

- Neil Young 'Cowgirl In The Sand'

- Neil Young 'Love To Burn'

- Opeth 'Blackwater Park'

- Tool 'Disgustipated'

- Tool 'Third Eye'

- Paul McCartney 'Eleanor Rigby/Eleanor's Dream Medley'

- Paul McCartney 'Hold Me Tight/Lazy Dynamite/Hands Of Love/Power Cut Medley'

- Stevie Ray Vaughan 'Tin Pan Alley'

- Jackson Brown 'Load Out & Stay'

- Jimi Hendrix 'Machine Gun'

- Bruce Springsteen 'Jungleland'

- Justin Timberlake 'I'm Loving It (Live Band Introduction Version)'

I'm sure there's more.

I'm surprised there's no Rhapsody love in this thread yet :P

Also, am I the only one that laughed at PunkRockPete's list of "long" songs he likes, with the longest being 12mins? :P

No offence meant dude, it was just funny considering Tristy's original post:

I'm not talking like 7 minute songs, I'm talking like 20+ minute songs.
