Notes from 5.31.04 RAW

I just got back from attending RAW, which was being held at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The show was off the hook from top-to-bottom. RAW got kicked early with Lilian Garcia making a few announcements about upcoming WWE events in Canada, she then introduced the opponents for the first dark match of the night.

Dark matches

Gail Kim def. Angel Williams

Pierre Carl Ouellette def. Maven

Chuck Palumbo & Test def. Eric Young & Petey Williams

These few matches before the HEAT tapping and RAW got underway were shockingly good. The biggest shock of the night was PCO’s win over Maven, in his home town. There were a lot of people watching this match very carefully. Not only with this one particular match, but with the women’s match, and the tag-team match as well.

RAW got kicked off with a big World Tag-Team Titles match. The former champions Chris Benoit & Edge took on La Résistance. This match was one of the hottest of the night, with the crowd behind both teams, it didn’t matter who was heel, or who was face. The run in by Orton was to no surprise, as the storyline between him and Edge continues, also announced as one of the matches for Bad Blood during RAW was Edge vs. Orton for the Intercontinental Title. The run in allowed Rob Conway & Sylvan Grenier to pick up the victory, becoming the new champions.

Throughout the night was surprisingly good, with the main event being another show stealer. Evolution had this match in their pockets. Triple H got the most heat of the night during the match. I’m unsure when the cameras stopped rolling, but Evolution ended up beating down Y2J & HBK in the ring until the “Rabid Wolverine” Chris Benoit made the save. HHH tried to use the World Title belt as a weapon on Benoit, but ended up hitting Y2J in the back of the head! Y2J ended up thinking Benoit attacked him instead, and locked Benoit up in the Walls of Jericho! Edge came down to the ring, and convinced Jericho that it wasn’t Benoit, but HHH who hit him. Jericho didn’t stick around after that, and left. Trainers had to help HBK to the back after the show, and this is when Lilian Garcia thanked us all for coming.

Preview:

Last week Booker T defeated Rob Van Dam to become the #1 contender for the WWE Heavyweight championship in a one-on-one match. Booker will now meet Eddie Guerrero for the WWE Title at the Great American Bash. Not only was there a crowning of a #1 contender, but Eddie had also successfully defeated and retained his WWE Title against John Bradshaw Layfield later that night. What will happen come GAB between these two? Will Booker be able to prove that he is better then everyone on the SD! Brand, after complaining about being drafted to the “B” show?

The feud between the United States champion John Cena & Rene Dupree continues to rage on sense Judgment Day. Last week these two faced off against one another in a big mixed tag-team match which saw Rene team with Dawn Marie while Cena tagged with the Playboy cover girl Torrie Wilson. Dawn & Rene were able to pick up the win after Rene used the Death Valley Driver on Torrie, which allowed Dawn to pin her. This week Rene will be taking on the WWE champion, Eddie Guerrero, in a non-title match, while Cena takes on the current #1 contender for the WWE Title, Booker T, in a non-title match.

Finally, The Undertaker will meet The Dudley Boyz in a big 2-on-1 handicap match. Bubba Ray & D-Von Dudley both look to get revenge on Undertaker after he laid out their manager Paul Heyman with a Tombstone two weeks ago. We’ll see whether or not this Thursday Night, if “The Dead Man” can over come the odds.
