Beyond the stuff that pioneered it in the 70s, I've only got into techno in the last year or so, nearly all of it Detroit Techno, so my recommendations are a little sparse.

Some of what has been suggested isn't actually "Techno" per'sey....

Apart from Booker T who knows his stuff.

I'd invest in "World Service" by Dave Clarke which IS proper techno.

I'd explore Jeff Mills and Derrick May.

Some harder Josh Wink would also count.

And yes, "Seventeen" by Ladytron is magnificent, but then again Ladytron are a fantastic group...
