I literally just threw out this idea and scribbled down some general rules for it in the last ten minutes, so if it just downright sucks - please say.

The idea is simply that you score points and hence a league is created, with there being an overall winner after the cup is over.

The predictions you would have to make primarily consist of the results for each game. There are also some other broader ones (e.g. tournament's top goalscorer) that can be thrown in as well - but not many, since I'd like to keep this as simple as possible. That's all you need to do - don't worry about the points scoring system, I will work all that out for you.

You don't have to make predictions for all the games/catagories, but obviously you wont be able to score as many points that way.

POINTS SCORING SYSTEM:

Matches

* 2pts for a correct result (win/lose/draw)

* 3pts for a correct goal margin (1 goal, 2 goals, etc.)

* 5pts for a correct score

These points are not culmulative.

Groups

* 10pts each for predicting qualifying team (i.e. maximum 20pts per group)

* 5 bonus points if both teams are in the right order (i.e. 25pts total)

(If you get only one team right, and they are in the right place, you do not get the bonus points)

Other

* 30pts for predicting the overall winner

* 30pts for predicting the top goalscorer

I think that's enough. Don't want it *too* complicated.

Okay, so here is a list of the games for the group stages. There are obviously a lot of games to predict scores for (24 total) but I think it's best to do them all now rather than, say, half now and the rest when the tournament's already started. That would just get messy.

Copy and paste, or quote, the following and fill in your predictions:

Predictions for the Quarterfinals will be made when the group stage has finished (evening of the 23rd June), and so on.

If you need to see information about the teams, such as squad lists to pick the top goalscorer, try visiting the official Euro 2004 website here.

MATCH PREVIEWS - SATURDAY 12 JUNE

PORTUGAL V GREECE

_40248005_por_gre_pre_150.gif

BBC1, 16:30 (KO 17:00)

Venue: Dragao Stadium, Porto

Referee: Pierluigi Collina (Italy)

The opening game in the tournament sees hosts Portugal take on Greece. The last time these two sides met was in a November 2003 friendly match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Greece are in fact the only team in Group A to have won their qualifying group - winning 6 out of 8 games, including an away win against Spain. Portugal, of course, qualified automatically as hosts.

Portugal are the only European team to have successfully qualified through the Group stage on every occasion of entry. In fact they are unbeaten in the Group stages, having won 6 games and drawn 3. Greece, on the other hand, have only competed in one previous European Championship (1980), where they picked up only 1 point from their three games.

Portugese coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is expected to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Pauleta as the man up front. Rui Costa is also expected to get the nod ahead of Deco in the three-man midfield.

Greece have injury worries with defenders Nikos Dabizas (back) and Traianos Dellas (muscle injury), although both should be fit to start. Similarly striker Demis Nikolaidis has a calf injury but is expected to be available.

The EWB Verdict

The majority expect Portugal to come out winners here, although some think that Greece could make a game of it. The average prediction is around 2-1 to Portugal.

The Professional Verdict

BBC pundit Gary Lineker also predicts a Portugese victory, stating that "containing the likes of...Portugal's strike force in front of their home crowd could prove a mission impossible."

SPAIN V RUSSIA

_40248133_spa_rus_pre_150.gif

BBC 1, 19:30 (KO 19:45)

Venue: Estadio Algarve, Faro

Referee: Urs Meier (Switzerland)

Russia must play without captain Victor Onopko, who is out with a knee injury, as they face a strong challenge in Spain.

These teams have not met since 1998 when Spain won the friendly match 1-0.

Despite having many world-class players, Spain have not performed well on the big stage. Historically they have only won one of their opening games in the European Championships since Group phases were introduced in 1980. However, they are unbeaten in their last 10 competitive matches, winning the last four.

Russia are one match short of equalling the competition record of 8 matches without a win, the record currently held by both Yugoslavia and Romania. That said, they are unbeaten in their last 6 competitive matches.

Spain have a choice of goalkeepers, and can either go with Real Madrid's young Iker Casillas or the veteran Santiago Canizares from Valencia. Meanwhile in defence, Michel Salgado is out with a hamstring injury meaning that Carles Puyol will switch to right-back. David Albeda is also a doubt with a muscle strain.

In addition to their captain, Greece have further injuries in the form of defender Segei Ignashevich (ankle), and striker Alexander Panov (knee). However Roman Sharanov and Dmitri Sennikov are expected to participate despite recent injuries themselves.

The EWB Verdict

Nothing less than a Spanish victory. Predictions range from a one to a three goal margin, but there is no doubt in anyone's mind as to the winners here.

The Professional Verdict

Gary Lineker also expects a simple win for Spain, stating that "Spain should have the making of the Russians."

Is it too late for me to sign up?

People can sign up whenever. Of course you can't score for games if they've already been played...
