I liked the first better, probably for the same reasons everyone likes Matrix more than the 2 sequels. the first one blows you away, the sequels are more of the same.

First one easy. The second one did start off well and the tag team idea was pretty good, but then it got bogged down in politicial crap.

I loved the idea in BR II of the daughter who prepared for her chance in BR and basically just kicked all kinds of ass. That was sweet.

I also got pissed off that most of the badass characters died so soon, apart from that it was an enjoyable movie, but no BR 1.

It is in subtitles.

And I'm with Heel Turn...unless you talk about the Alien films (in which case, Aliens is the best one), generally the first films are always better.

People always cite Godfather II as the example for a sequel surpassing it's original. I don't really agree though. Do the Star Wars films count? If so The Empire Strikes back has always been my favourite.

The original hands-down.

I thought the Teacher character was a lot better in the first one too, the dude in the second film just got weird (remember when he started chomping all those pills and foaming at the mouth?)

I'm not a fan of Japanese cinema by any stretch of the imagination, but I quite liked Battle Royal. Until that guy got shot, ate a cookie and then proceeded to die. That just made me laugh. A lot.

The first one - mainly because it was more original and 'Beat' Kitano was much more prominent in it.

I have only seen BR1 so I choose that. I am still waiting to rent BR2 from local video store but it is a hot rental it seems as it is never in.

It's not exactly banned in the USA at all, the company in Japan who distributes the film, Toiei or something, refuses to allow it's release in America. In fact there apparently have been many major film companies offering to buy the rights from said Toei or whoever.

On subject of the film, both are good. But the original is better. The original is the only one that follows the actual Battle Royale concept which is no doubt why you're interested. The second film deals with the consequences of you actions, such as the consequences of having a game like BR. As Beat Takeshi put it in the first film "If you hate someone, you take the consequences." Don't expect the same thing from the second film, and you'll probably end up enjoying it a well.

But yeah, generally the original is better because for some films, they'll make the first one with no intention of making a sequel, then it'll be successful and they'll have to make up some convoluted story to explain how the hell a sequel is possible.

X-Men 2 was noway better than number 1 in my opinion, but I personally think they are both just easy viewing films, so I'm not surprised someone thinks 2 is better than 1, as there is little to choose. Spiderman 2 I have not seen.

IMO, Terminator 2 isn't as good as Terminator purely for the Arnie face turn. The Terminator is better as a baddy, and the film just isn't as good having him as a compassionate bodyguard, rather than a psycho killer.

And FI, if we include Star Wars (don't see why not), most people would say Empire Strikes Back is better.
