X-Box 360 HD-DVD Extender?

Only In Dreams

Recommended Posts

Didn't know if I should post it here, but since it is for one of the consoles, I thought why not...

Does anyone have the HD-DVD extender for the 360, and if so is it worth it?

I'm contemplating in either to just get the extender, or just wasting my life and buying a Playstation 3, so I can use it as a Blu Ray player.

Thanks for anyone who answers.

My brother has it, it's good, does exactly what you would expect from it.

The question is, what movies are you looking for? Neither HD-DVD or Blu-ray has taken off yet and it's still unclear which is going to be the winner. If Blu-ray does become the standard, you're stuck with a $200 brick on top of your 360.

Porn industry chose HD-DVD, that means BluRay is screwed.

From what I understand, Sony has backed off the porn ban and Vivid will be releasing "Debbie Does Dallas Again" on both formats, whichever sells more is where they're going. At least that was the last I heard about it.

Yes. But the porn industry goes with what's cheaper. HD is cheaper, BluRay doesn't offer astoundingly better quality, the porn industry will and I think already has gone with HD-DVD. And much like in the battle between VHS and BetaMax, the porn industry decides the winner

At the moment Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD by nearly 3: 1 ratio and has about 10 times more videos coming out this year. Also he first high definition movie to reach the top between hd-dvd or blu-ray was blu-ray. It was only behind 4 standard dvds. Also despitite hd-dvd's months jump start on blu-ray; Blu-Ray has sold more discs is total(analyists saying it's because of the ps3) and there are rumors that walmart and many other big sellers are killing the switch on hd-dvd as early as next spring. Also this year exclusive titles to blu-ray are debuting such as all the spiderman moves, prirates of the carribean movies, harry poitter, matriix movies, lord of the rings, disney movies, and a one time exlcusive hd-dvd movie Troy is crossing over to blu-ray with many more extra features. And there are also plans of lowering blu-ray prices to current dvd priceses by the end of the year. And if nobody else on here is from the PSN undergrounf forums the first porn blu-ray has been confirmed for summer of this year.

Just on the actuall players in the 360 and ps3.

EGM (I think) said that the PS3 blu ray player is up to par with all the blu ray players you can buy in stores, but the HD DVD extension for 360 is not up to par with the HD DVD players you can buy in stores.

Just thought I would add that little bit of information.

That's not entirely true. From iTWire:

Last Thursday Blu-ray Disc Association chairman Frank Simonis said that Blu-ray discs were now out-selling HD DVDs by 3:1 in the US - a claim disputed by Deputy General manager of HD DVD at Toshiba, Olivier Van Wynendaele. He said the Blu-ray camp's "propaganda" relied on Blu-ray vouchers given away with Sony's PlayStation 3 games console to fudge the numbers, reports Tech.co.uk.

Sony's ploy of giving away Casino Royale on Blu-ray to boost takeup numbers is an obvious one, but it's about time Toshiba came out and told it how it is. Sony wrote the book when it comes to dirty tricks, plus it has no intention of losing another format war after the VHS versus Betamax debacle. If HD DVD stands any chance of survival, it has to take the front foot in the propaganda war.

Wynendaele insists Toshiba had sold 200,000 HD DVD players in the US, compared to just 30,000 true Blu-ray players. The two million PS3 sales should not be counted because there was no guarantee people were using them as Blu-ray players. As for Sony's plans to release cheaper Blu-ray players at the end of the year, Toshiba will undercut this further to regain HD DVD's price advantage. By then it could be too late if Toshiba doesn't stand up for itself now.

Wynendaele goes on to say what everyone but the Blu-ray camp acknowledges - with high def player sales accounting for less than 1 per cent of regular DVD player sales in the US, neither format can claim victory yet.

It seems Blu-ray's constant trash talking of HD DVD has finally hit a nerve. It's about time Toshiba and HD DVD took on Sony's propaganda machine at its own game. Sony has the arrogance to continually declare the format war is over before it even started, and the only reason why people such as myself have started to go along with Sony's "HD DVD is dead" mantra is because HD DVD seems prepared to sit back and take it.

We're only days away from the PlayStation 3's release in Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. If HD DVD doesn't start a little trash talking of its own, the Blu-ray-enabled PS3 could be the knock out punch in this format war.

The article is definitely a bit biased, but like it said, it's way too early to tell. If the PS3 ever picks up steam in America, Blu-ray will probably come out on top, but that's if.

I thought the porn industry chose the internet. Or was that just the consumers.

Anyways, I like the Blu-Ray and only have it because it came with my PS3 and the fact that I have movies because of the vouchers. But it's extremely hit and miss, one movie can look good and the next you might as well of gone and bought the 10 dollar used DVD at blockbuster. Everything I've seen in HD-DVD has been outstanding, but I believe it's also go this same problem. I like the HD-DVD because not only is it cheaper, but it can have a regular DVD on one side and the HD on the other. That's a nice option to sale more units I would think. Also, I like that function in HD-DVD where you get the little block in the corner that tells you shit, it's something like iHD either way it's an interactivity tool that plays in the corner when there is some activity possible in the scene.

Although there is no real reason for either to win or lose, produce machines that play both or sign on to use Warner Brothers new disc they call the "Total HD" I think and that has both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats on one disc.

And besides wouldn't the Blu-Ray being getting their huge 3:1 push from the PS3? Cause a report last month said that HD-DVD hardware was moving better than Blu-Ray not including PS3's. But the movies are as seen 3:1, 2:1 last month.

All in all, HD-DVD is on par with Blu-Ray and sometimes better and vice versa, so for 200 I'd say go for it.
