England quartet up for Fifa award

Four England internationals have made the shortlist for the Fifa world player of the year award.

Wayne Rooney, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are among the 30 players in the running.

From that list national team coaches and captains will vote for their top three players, to be revealed at Fifa's world player gala on 17 December.

AC Milan's Kaka is the favourite to win the award for the first time, ahead of Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Chelsea have five nominees for the Fifa award, behind only Barcelona who have seven.

There are five Italian players in the final 30, including current world player of the year Fabio Cannavaro.

Brazil star Kaka, 25, is the current FIFPro world player of the year - an award voted for by 45,000 members of the players' union.

He was instrumental in Milan's Champions League success last season, sealed with a win over Liverpool in the final, and he was the competition's top scorer with 10 goals including three in the semi-final win over Manchester United.

Kaka was the subject of an unsuccessful bid from Real Madrid in the close season, but he has hinted that if he did leave Italy he would like to play in Spain or England.

He told Esquire magazine: "I'm very happy at Milan - and I don't expect that situation to change.

"But if you want to talk hypothetically, if I were ever to leave it would have to be for a club of equal stature - and I think I would only find that in England or Spain.

"Manchester United are a wonderful side. I like Arsenal, too."

Further evidence that a lot of these lists go purely on reputation, rather than how a player has played that year.

Absolutely. I mean arguements can be made for Terry, Lampard and Gerrard, but frankly Rooney in there is just silly.

I still remember when Paulo Wanchope got a vote for world player of the year while at West Ham...

The only ones from England that deserve a sniff at this are Ronaldo, Essian and Drogba.

Terry was injured last year and doesn't really deserve to be up there. Gerrard hasn't been setting the world alight, same with Lampard and as for Rooney, I dunno. He's been piss, the worst of the four.

Based on last year I'd pick Ronaldo.

What time period do they look at? 2007? or the 2006-07 season? I think it'll be Kaka again, but Patrick Vieira should do better than he will do as he's been immense in that brilliant Inter team (domestically).

Viera will probably end up in the final five. Who ever left Francesco Totti (European Golden Boot Winner) out of this list should be shot and tossed into a large whole and be buried.

Eto'o and Tevez havent played most of the year.

Lahm, Marquez, Deco and Gattuso dont deserve it.

Cannavaro, Ronaldinho and Rooney are only in there due to name value.

This award is bullshit. But still my predictions are:

2. Cristiano Ronaldo

3. Nesta

4. Messi

5. Viera

Ronaldinho hasn't been continuously great for a couple of years now. It's just lip service to him to put him into these awards.

I'd probably go with Kaka. He tore Utd (and many other teams) to pieces last season. I wouldn't be surprised if Ronaldo got it though.
