The SFA revealed their 5 man shortlist recently, with Billy Davies since announcing he was withdrawing himself from the running. So that leaves the above 4 with Souness listed as favourite at William Hill. I'm certainly hoping for anyone but him, but out of the other 3 I'd like to see McGhee get the job, although if I'm honest all the candidates are a bit underwhelming. Who would everyone else like to see at the helm?

Personally, I feel that if Souness is chosen, he'll probably do a better job than if he were managing a club. They're two different things (just look at Eriksson). After all, he won't have to spend any money (and everyone knows how he spends his money - poorly), and he has an entire country's players at his disposal. I have no idea who the rest of them are, but they probably won't do a better job than Souness probably could.

Tommy Burns for me, knows the set-up, knows the team. McGhee would probably be a decent choice as well, but I can see him doing a McLeish/Smith and going back to club football if a club was to make the call.

Souness is a big no-no. Unless we want a team filled with Rangers players. Remember what he did to Blackburn after all.

McGhee would be too much of a knee jerk appointment. He's had a good 6 months in charge of Motherwell, but he has hardly set the heather alight at any of his other clubs, and I bet that he (like Smith and McLeish) would leave the Scotland post at the first sign of a Premier job.

Burley is an okay manager but, again, nothing outstanding.

Burns has been out of the management game for a while and would almost be a sympathy choice, given that he didn't get interviewed the last time or when Vogts left.

Souness is a bastard, but he has managed at the top level pretty recently, has foreign experience and a small degree of success.

Souness is probably the best of a bad bunch.

Craig Levein would have been a better option than all of them.

I'm hoping for Burley. Souness is seen as a failure, McGhee's been very good but just this season and Burns is also seen as a failure.

Burley did immensely well at Hearts in a short period of time, turning them into a title threatening team in about half a season which he got sacked for, he took Ipswich to the Premiership (and the UEFA Cup), and has generally done a good job everywhere he's been. He always aims higher than he probably had a right to, and that's what Scotland needs.

He'd be my pick.

Incidentally, did anyone watch Reporting Scotland tonight?

My cousin's grandpa was being interviewed on it because he was the person who originally scouted George Burley for Ipswich. Not that I actually know my cousin's grandpa but it's probably the closest I'll ever get to fame.
