Final Fantasy-fest 2010/11

I have to do a bit of revision today, which involves reading a lot of critical material about Macbeth and Twelfth Night, but I aim to be done by 7-8ish and then it's FFVI time.

For the sake of others playing VI, do I need to spoiler tag stuff or has it been out long enough to avoid that? Unless I'm the only one who hasn't played it before

I'm not going to bother, so I'd say no.

I'll be playing the PSX port from the mid-90s, so no special new Espers or slightly-improved sprites for me. I'm old fucking school. At least we all get the wacky localisation though.

I think I'm going to ignore my usual "100%" rule on this and just play through the stories on these play throughs (bar XIII, obviously) and see where I get in terms of pure enjoyment.

I've never owned a guide or whatever for VI, and I'm fucking dreadful at finishing 100% without guides telling me exactly what to do at each exact moment, so I'll probably do that too.

Unless somebody can point me to a guide.

I just use GameFAQs, I don't think VI has ever had an official guide.

What major sidequests are there besides getting all the characters and Espers? Any?

Shit ton of side characters. I'll still be doing all them and whatever else I feel like.

Finally got to Figaro after half an hour of wondering around the desert (stuck to the right hand side, along the mountains for some reason, thought when Locke said south he meant straight south not south and west a bit), just met Edgar (who seems to flip me off during his inroduction). He also takes all of ten seconds to start hitting on Terra. I like him already

Well, since the majority of you all are playing VI, I'm wondering if I should switch to that or not. I have the same version you have, Kent, and really it's a wonder I'm not playing my PS1 version of IV instead of the GBA one.

Okay, I caved in. Started playing VI this evening after D&D. Not very far along at all, as I'm right at the gates of Figaro. I let the moogles take the brunt of the guard assault in the tactical minigame, and only one--poor Mugmug--fell to the enemy.

I played a tiny bit, beat up the Whelk, and then quicksaved. I killed Biggs and Wedge with fire to get more experience for Terra, might try that in the moogle battle, but I'm not sure Locke can handle himself.

Well, it happened: my first defeat. I'm racing down the Lehe River and met up with Ultros, I think his name is. A big battle ensued with Terra getting knocked out several times and Banon spamming his prayer power. Sadly, after some time and enough damage to the squid that would likely cause him to drop in a few more rounds, he got a lucky shot in on Banon, killing him and ending the game.

I'm going to try again later this afternoon and hopefully do much better.

Do you have your guys in the back row? Especially Banon, but most of their attacks are just as good from the back as they are from the front.

Couple of hours into VI now, just met Sabin and Banon and am on the way to Narshe. Sabin seems cool is slightly stupid (I mean diving into the river tp fight a octopus that took all four of us to just beat it back? ). Choose to follow the Locke story as he tries to escape South Figaro. Love this game so much

Holy shit, I always forget how broken Auto Crossbow is for the first little bit of the game. South Figaro cave right now.
