Shannon Sharpe has decided to accept a job as an NFL commentator with CBS Sports.

Sharpe

A spokesman for CBS told The Associated Press that Sharpe will join "The NFL Today" pregame show this fall, ending the tight end's brilliant 14-year playing career.

The move was first reported by KCNC-TV in Denver. An official announcement is expected Tuesday.

Sharpe was believed to be the leading candidate to replace Deion Sanders on the pregame show. Sharpe is familiar to CBS executives, having worked the playoffs for the network in the past.

The all-time NFL leader in receptions by a tight end, Sharpe spent months considering his retirement, then announced shortly after the draft that he would return for his 15th, and final, season in 2004. Recent events, however, have changed his thinking.

Given that such a high-profile TV position might not be available next spring, when Sharpe had planned to retire, the talkative tight end had a change of heart. Sanders and CBS parted on Wednesday over compensation issues.

Perhaps sensing what was in the works, the Broncos signed free agent tight end Byron Chamberlain last week.

Beyond Sharpe and Chamberlain, the Broncos currently have four other tight ends on the roster. Longtime tight end Dwayne Carswell was moved to offensive tackle at minicamp last week but, obviously, could be switched back to his original position if necessary.

CBS's pregame show is not too bad but I think their postgame and halftime shows are better because they show plays from close games almost instantly. I usually channel surf between FOX, CBS and ESPN during the pre-game show depending on the segment being played.

im glad for sharpe. He didnt have that much time left, a year or two maybe, but now he gets a good job, talking about the sport that he loves, and still in the spotlight.

Do any of you actually listen to Shannon when he speaks? He's hilarious, witty, and intelligent, but you can barely make out his words. His voice combined with his annunciation (sp) make it really hard to understand him. Hopefully he gets with a speaking coach before the season starts.
