Mafia: The Original Format

Recommended Posts

So, for those of you that haven't seen my post in the Discussion Thread, methinks that we should all have a round of what the original version of this game was before Zan came into the Dome and went all, "But how can I take full advantage of the fact that this is on a forum instead?" This means that it will follow the rules that you would use should you want to play this game at a party or something. So, how does this change the rules? Well, how about I just give you the rules here before you decide to sign up?

THE RULES THAT YOU WOULD FOLLOW IF THIS WERE IN PERSON
1. We start with the players and a deck of cards. Each person is dealt a card, and does not share which card they receive.
2. If your card is a number (this includes Aces), then you are simply Town-Aligned. If your card is a Queen, you are The Doctor, Town-Aligned. Should the game be sufficiently large, there will be two doctors. If your card is a King, you are The Cop, Town-Aligned. There will similarly be two cops if the game is big enough. If your card is a Jack, you are Mafia-Aligned. If your card is the Joker, you are The Mayor, Town-Aligned.
3. Normally, the game would start at night. However, so everybody gets a fair shake to play (and since I already have your roles, unlike in the IRL version), I will do the first night phase as an automatic write-up. The game on the forum therefore starts in a day phase.
4. The phases break down as such:
DAY PHASE
On Day One, IRL, I would call on the player holding the Joker to show it. That is so that the town will know who is The Mayor. The Mayor cannot be killed. However, unlike most mafia games, the Mayor's ability has an altered responsibility. Barring this, all day phases go as follows:

  • The players discuss whom to lynch. However, unlike a regular version of this game, you cannot vote for somebody - yet.
  • Instead, a player must nominate somebody that they believe should be lynched in the following manner: Nominate: (Player Name)
  • Should another player believe that that individual is worthy of a lynch, that player posts Seconded: (Player Name) or Third: (Player Name)
  • Should three people agree that somebody should be lynched (or at least considered for lynching), the game then goes into a voting phase as to whether the town should or should not lynch that individual. Votes are cast either as Vote: Lynch or Vote: No Lynch.
  • The Mayor can veto a lynch vote trigger once per day phase, meaning that three other people would have to come together to nominate that player, in which case the veto is overridden. Likewise, the Mayor can call for a lynch vote on a person who has only been nominated; this cannot be done on somebody if the Mayor has nominated that person. The Mayor can only use these powers once per player, i.e. if the Mayor vetoed a lynch vote on a player before, they cannot do so again, and should an individual survive a lynch vote that the Mayor instituted automatically, the Mayor cannot second a nomination and call for a lynch vote on that player again.
  • In the event of a tie vote or the majority of the town voting Lynch, the lynch is successful. Otherwise, no lynch occurs.
  • Once the lynch phase ends, the night phase occurs, with the town "going to sleep". As such, discussion during the Night Phase is prohibited, and will result in a modkill after the second offense.

NIGHT PHASE

  • The Mafia chooses collectively whom to kill.
  • The Doctor(s) chooses somebody to save.
  • The Cop(s) chooses whom to investigate. You will get a "Yes" or "No" answer in the update as to whether you have found scum or not.
  • NOTE TO ALL PLAYERS WITH ROLES: The Night Updates will treat this like an IRL game, so the length of your discussion as well as whom you choose will be important, as there will be indications of physical movement and length of time taken to perform an action.
  • After the night phase, everybody finds out if somebody died, and whether they had a role or if they were just Town-Aligned. NOTE TO MAFIA: Don't try to kill the Mayor, I meant it when I said you can't kill him.
  • The next Day Phase begins.

As always, the game ends either when there are not enough Town-Aligned players to put together a lynch vote, or all the Mafia have been lynched.

I'm perfectly happy with a long sign-up period, so if other Mafias start before mine even though they've had sign-up threads started after this one, it's all good.

  • Once a lynch vote is triggered, only discussion about the merits for and against the lynch is allowed. Anything else will receive a warning the first time, an automatically-assigned Lynch vote the second time, and an automatic lynch nomination in the following phase for the third offense. Anything beyond this will result in a modkill.

Is this really necessary?

Also presumably the mafia aren't allowed to communicate privately during the day, correct?

Given the nature of the game, discussing anything outside of the lynch outside of a lynch vote would be wasting time IRL, so I'm just ensuring we don't do that. And that's right - since everybody is awake during the day phase, any conversation that the Mafia makes in-game needs to be during the night phase. As such, I'll allow the opening night phase to run for a bit before the Night Zero update so that Mafia can at least communicate a bit and discuss strategy.

And Rider - you can probably still be snarky, Just figure out a different way to do it.

Okay, due to everybody's concerns, that "no off-topic discussion" rule will be ditched for the forum version. And I wasn't planning on starting for a while yet - maybe not even until after Rider's 12-person Mafia starts.
