  1. After the defeat to Swansea, i can't see Wigan surviving now. Away at Arsenal straight after a cup final is a tough match for them and their form in recent weeks hasn't really been 'Super Wigan' (1 win in the last 6 PL games, 5 points out of a possible 18). If Norwich and Newcastle get at least a point tomorrow against a disinterested Albion side and a relegated QPR, then it's all but out of their reach. Very possible we could be going into the final weekend with nothing of significance to be decided, except maybe 4th/5th place if Spurs win tomorrow.

  2. If Fergie thinks Moyes is good enough to lead United then so do I. I was pretty wary of a Mourinho-type manager coming in who'd try give us quick success but show little regard for planning for the future. Moyes is a less flashy option but the fact he's been given a 6 year contract, has the support of Fergie, Sir Bobby and the board, and has the benefit of the club's incredible resources and infrastructure gives me a lot of optimism that it's the best decision for the long term future of the club.

  3. Yeah Cantona was the catalyst for our success. Before he came, we were 8th in the league, were struggling to score and on a terrible run of form. By the end of the season, we had won the league for the first time in 26 years by a pretty big margin. You can't really understate his importance or the ability he had on the pitch to make stuff happen. He was the focal point of our team/attack. Sheringham was good but he wasn't the central figure that Cantona was. Teddy got the goal in the 99 final but even that season the Cole/Yorke partnership played a much bigger role in our success than him.

  4. I will never tire of seeing the atmosphere at the Dortmund stadium, it just looks incredible.

£18 a ticket apparently. Same as a League Two game.

Someone mentioning Howard Wilkinson got me thinking, is there any league in the world where a native manager hasn't won the top division title in twenty years?

Just thinking, are there even many other leagues with so few native managers? We only have four English managers in the Premier League and two are getting relegated. Admittedly in this country the Scots/Welsh/Irish managers aren't treated as foreign so that skews it a bit (brings us to either 10 or 11 British managers I think). Looking elsewhere in Europe, the Bundesliga has 18 German managers, the Italian and French leagues have 19 native managers each whilst La Liga has 13.

  5. How long was Eric Cantona banned for after the kung-fu kick?

He got 8 months (end of January til the end of September). The circumstances were a quite a bit different though. To start with his went to court and he eventually ended up with 120 hours of community service (reduced from a prison sentence of two weeks I think). I think I saw someone argue here that with Suarez, the FA should have taken into account how Liverpool dealt with it? Well United suspended Cantona for four months until the end of the season right after it happened but the FA still gave him a 8 month ban from all football activities.

  6. None of those are excusable either.

There has up now, been a marked improvement in him from last season when he was far more prone to petulance. He has acknowledged, in fact, Saturday he spoke about how his wife told him off for his temperamental streak. Which is manageable. He has shown it is such. I don't think he's a vindictive cynical guy (whereas Barton has a general air of arrogance and aggressiveness), he doesn't give that impression. He does seem highly emotive and just has a hot streak that manifests itself when he is frustrated.

Do I think that excuses him? Not at all. I think it can be worked out.

I'm sure the club have been working with him internally too. And they probably will do more now.

I'd say the stamps on Mirallas (and injuring him in the process), Distin, David Jones and all the other little snide kicks make him look a pretty vindictive and aggressive guy. Hell, he just punched Gonzalo Jara in the face the other month whilst on international duty. Does that really show a 'marked improvement' this season?

  7. Just looking, Sunderlands next three games are Man United, Chelsea and then an away derby match against Newcastle. Can't see them getting many points from that. Plus they are only 4 points above Wigan (who have a game in hand) so it's pretty possible they'll be in the bottom three at the end of this little spell of games.

  8. Yeah I watched Silver Linings Playbook yesterday and thought the same about the betting scene. I enjoyed most of the film and there was some great acting from Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence but it felt a bit too cliched for my liking, particularly so in the last third of the film.

  9. Started the day with £20 in one account and have ended it with £93. Found I had about 29p in my Bet365 account which I have somehow turned into around £16.60. I have late goals from Arsenal, Everton and now Valencia to thank. Normally it's the late goals that cost me all my bets!

  10. Went to see this yesterday and loved it. All the big actors really delivered. Waltz is a brilliant actor, Jamie Foxx really surprised me with how good he was, Di Caprio was great as ever, and Samuel L. Jackson was fantastic too. I thought the comedy really made it what it was, though. The KKK scene was hilarious.
