Your favorite bassists

You all suck.

You all suck for not mentioning my new second place bassist (Everybody except Jaco and Les go down one place, sorry Flea, not on my top 5 anymore.)

The most influencial bassist of all. Geddy Lee is what a lead bassist should do. One of the fastest and melodic bassist from forever.

You just suck for not mentioning.

Go download any Rush song, his bass kicks ass in every song of them.

LES "Motherfucking" CLAYPOOL.

Just an absolute legend. Or at least in my eyes. That's all that needs to be said.

And as the topic is favourite bassists not 'best bassists' i'll throw Jim Cherry's name in there (RIP). Helped make 2 good bands, and showed great potential with another before his untimely death.

My favourite bassist from my favourite band: Matt Freeman.

Great bass lines in plenty of rancid's songs. The bass is obviously the strongest point of the band. As a favourite song to listen to the bass i would say maxwell murder. Other bassists i like: Lex Feltham (a lot), Fat Mike (if you select the right stuff), maybe joe principe too, and Hunter. Though, the style where i would find

the more bassists i would like would be SKA. Never in anyother style i've been amazed by the amount of quality on bass that i've seen in SKA bands.

Before everyone starts attacking me for not picking any mass culture bass GOD, i remind you the topic is favourite bassists, so it's not that strange that i didn't pick bassists from styles i didn't like. Plus... just because a thing it's hard to play doesn't necessarily mean it's great.

Just to comment the guy who said Mike Dirnt, i don't think he's a bad bassist, i actually like his riffs, but he's somewhat limited, so i wouldn't refer him as a GREAT bassist.

The best thing on Blink 182 and only good thing IMO was the drummer, but Hoppus is at least a better bassist than what he is a singer. I can give you that :P

Guest Locutus of Borg

Mike Gordon (Phish) - Great improvisationist, just listen to any live Phish

Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead/The Dead/Phil Lesh and Friends) - Another great improvisationist who rarely played the same riff twice in a live song.

Rob Derhak (moe.) - Perhaps one of the best slap players around today.

Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones) - This is one guy I would love to see duel Les Claypool in a technique competition. Probably the only one who could beat Claypool in technique and technical skill.

Kenny Gradney (Little Feat) - Another man with great technical skill and an awsome ability to jam it out.

John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) - Amazing speed on this one. May not be terribly technical, but could move up and down the board like anything.

Carlos D (Interpol) - Not a great technical player on this one, either. Not terribly fast either, but amazing ability to create basslines with life and fervor that fit a song perfectly.

You can definately tell I'm a mark for the jammers because I think it takes a lot more skill to think on your toes like most of the aforementioned bass players. I think along with skill though, it's important to have enough knowledge of your instrument and the music you're playing to think creatively and try new things. All of the players I have listed are able to do that, and that's part of what makes them all great.
