Uhh, just for the sake of clarity Pittsburgh got away with another hold there as a lineman tackled a Seahawk defender who was chasing after Randle El. This has been the worst officiated NFL game I've ever seen. And I can't stand the Seahawks.

So if it's down by contact, ie. a tackle, or knee/elbow touching the ground, etc. then it counts towards gaining a 1st down.

If it's just dropped, the opposing team can get the ball and just carry on?

And what constitutes a fumble if it's not just dropping the ball?

If he gets tackled and the ball leaves his hands before he goes down then its a fumble. Whoever picks up the fumble can run with it.

if the guys knee hits the floor he is down and the ball is safe unless there is opposition in contact with him is what i believe.... but this game has just confused me as the officials have been so shit.... i belive we need an american clarification.... US cousins we need your knwledge imparted on us....
