The Movie World Cup!

The EWB Movie World Cup!

All hail imdb.com for many years of most excellent movie information and giving us the chance to attack or defend our favourite or least favourite movies or actors.

So now I'm going to use it for another purpose - the first inaugrial EWB MOVIE WORLD CUP!

This is how it will work...

The top 32 ranked movis on imdb (ranked by the users themselves) will enter the tournament using the same process as the Football World Cup.

There will be 8 groups of four movies - each movie will face the others in their group scoring 3 points if they "win" the match by getting at least 5 more votes than the other. If the two movies score within five votes of eachother they will draw and score a single point. A loser scores no points.

The top two from each group go through to the knockout stage until we're left with one remaining movie - EWB's Greatest Movie! Huzzah!

As with the World Cup proper, the 32 teams are seeded A to D - the top 8 movies are A seeds, 9-16 = B, 17-24 = C and 25-32 = D!

These will be drawn into groups with each group getting an A, B, C and D movie!

Basically the way voting works is, I will list every game being played that round - you vote for as many or as few of the matches as you want by copying the list and bolding your choices. Every day I will count the votes and announce the results. The more people who get involved the better.

On a personal note, there are some fantastic films that aren't top seeds.

I'll be controvertial, and say I think I have a way around C. Goodfellas IS better than Godfather (it insists on itself >_>), and I personally prefer Fight Club to Star Wars, though I readily will admit to being the minority.

Of course, my system doesn't account for Goodfellas vs. Fight Club, but you can't have everything.
