One of my friends asked me about Death Cab For Cutie today because I kept going on about them so I said I'd copy him an album. Which one do you think I should copy? I'm thinking Transatlanticism would be the obvious one but it's hard for me to tell because it was actually the Photo Album that got me into Death Cab but I'm not sure it would be the best to get started on.

Well, "Plans" is the most easily accessible, and my friend who also love DCFC, "Plans" is his favourite (then "Trans", then "Photo" and he doesn't really like the rest. :o).

I'd say "Trans" is more easily accessible than "The Photo Album". And has some more 'straight forward' style melodies...and as a whole flows better as an album, sounds much more grandiose and beautiful. Go with "Trans..." IMO. Although "Plans" might be a good bet if he's not into this kind of indie and stuff.

I gave the other half a burned copy of "Narrow Stairs" and told her I'm not speaking to her again until she likes it. :shifty:

Seriously, her general 'whatever' feeling towards music pisses me off sometimes, especially given how much I engrose myself in the stuff. She can't listen to an album. She likes songs. Not bands. And even then, she never has music on when she's home, she doesn't have on i-pod or anything. She can just live without it. What the fuck does she do with herself? :shifty:

Because I missed the Top 10 albums of the week...and I can't be arsed to write anything...I give you "My Top 25 Albums Of The Year...in order" (eg...how they'd rank in a kind of end of year list).

3. "A Thousand Words" by Styrofoam

4. "Alas, I cannot Swim" by Laura Marling

6. "Rivers Arms" by Balmorhea

7. "Deathconciousness" by Have A Nice Life

8. "Searching For The Hows And Whys" by Get Cape Wear Cape Fly

9. "Hold On Now, Youngster..." by Los Campesinos!

10. "Darker Days" by Time Again

11. "Winters Daughter" by RickoLus

12. "The Golden Hour" by Firewater

13. "At Mount Zoomer" by Wolf Parade

18. "New Lexicon" by Paint It Black

19. "Kyte" by Kyte

20. "Turning Dragon" by Clark

22. "Sometimes Things Just Dissapear" by Polar Bear Club

23. "Field Manual" by Chris Walla

24. "The Tide And Its Takers" by 36 Crazyfists

25. "Watershed" by Opeth

That's quite tough actually. There's 7 albums I see as GREAT, and could very well be top 10 albums at the end of the year. And whilst there's been a lot of good albums, I did actually find myself kind of struggling once I got to around 22/23. And for those wondering I've heard well over 100+ albums from this year. At one point I started cataloguing them in a notepad file, and got to around 90, and that was in early March. I haven't updated it since then.

New Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan is fucking brilliant - it's lost a bit of the 4am hotel room sound of the last album, as its a lot less minimalist in its sound and a lot wider reaching in its subject matter, but fuck me it's good. It's like a 21st century Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, and Lanegan's voice just sounds brilliant, it's gravelly and whiskey-drenched even by his standards, and works so well with Campbell's as always. Early candidate for album of the year, just like "Ballad Of The Broken Seas" was two years ago.

Gaslight Anthem have completed their new full length for SideOneDummy. The record is titled The '59 Sound and is due out August 19, 2008. The record will include 12 songs plus one exclusive bonus track on the iTunes digital version.

Along with the CD and digital versions, the label is promising a coloured vinyl and 7-inch single to go with the record. The '59 Sound is the follow up to Señor and the Queen which was released in 2008 and Sink or Swim which was released last year.

I already knew it was finished, but still, 13 new songs. :D

This post is rather likely to get me a double dose of hate but I don't care.

#1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2Dl3VQ2K2U. Fantastic song. Incredibly poppy and 80s sounding cheese. Love it.

#2. I'm not a particularly huge fan of them, but you can get a free Dirty Pretty Things song at http://www.dirtyprettythingsband.com/. Might as well - it's free. Bizarrely they do not recognise Ayrshire/East Ayrshire as a county on their sign up form though. I like this song. It sounds a bit more shambolic than their usual - one reason I love Babyshambles far more than Dirty Pretty Things. Download it - even if you didn't like their first effort.

How awesome is Thom Yorke's solo stuff? I mean I am really not that much of a Radiohead fan, but I love his electronic-chillout solo stuff. We had "Black Swan" on at work tonight, I totally forgot how awesome it was. "Harrowdown Hill" inparticular I remember being a fucking incredible song.

I liked the solo record, not loved, but "The Eraser" and "Analyze" always stood out to me.

Moving on to the latest HYPE record, The Ting Tings's debut is pretty damn cool, even though I imagine it might bore me on later listens like stuff of that ilk.

The Chuck Ragain/Austin Lucas collaboration album, "Bristle Ridge" is absolutely fucking brilliant. It's total cheesy Country/Folk/Bluegrass stuff. Banjo's, acoustic guitars, harmonicas and strings kind of shit. Fucking brilliant.

Chuck Ragan has such a brilliant voice. How he can go from gnarly stuff like Hot Water Music to big acoustic numbers and now this (Which is basically an extension of his acoustic stuff, but still) is awesome.

So The Gaslight Anthem's newest single "The '59 Sound" is available for pre order. It also feature another song from the new album, "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues". Hopefully this gets put up on Itunes or leaked soon since I don't have anything that would play a 7".

OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!

I wouldn't be all that surprised if/I'm expecting that "...Cowgirls..." was a cover, and maybe the i-tunes 'bonus' album track.

Haha, apparently it's sold out already. Was only 1000 copies, but still, that's great.

- as posted a few pages back, "59 Sound (live)"...poor quality...but the song still sounds awesome. Edited by YI

So, the new Sparks album is (predictably) absolutely fucking brilliant. "I've Never Been High" and "Lighten Up, Morrissey" are absolutely brilliant, and the whole album manages to do what they do best in the way it couldn't be anyone but Sparks, but at the same time is very much of its time, yet oddly timeless at the same time. Other than some of the shit in the '80s, they're one of the more consistent bands out there - heck, even the 80s stuff is better than a lot of bands' best, let alone their worst. Sparks > Most.

Also, has anyone heard of the band Drive-By Argument? I've never heard of them, but picked up the album today on account of the track entitled "There's Nothing As Epic As Golden Axe", and I really hope they're good enough to do that title justice, yet I have a feeling they won't.
