I don't get why Formula 1 keeps wanting to target the American audience. It was a fragile market anyway considering the US doesn't take to sports not their own creation that much. Then came Indy 2005, where the market was - rightly - killed off due to Jean Todt sandbagging any changes to make that race safe just so Ferrari could get an easy 1, 2. I'd like them to look at new European GP's instead so they can at least get an audience. Like Russia, that sounds like a good idea.

The only reason I can think of is to help promote the carmakers who are competing in F1. If I recall correctly, the cancellation of races in North America was one of the (minor) reasons Toyota gave for leaving F1. Sure, they didn't do very well as a race outfit, but at least they're able to put their brand out there in front of millions of American eyeballs and all that.

Christian Klien, HRT's new third driver, will be taking part in Friday's P1 rather than Chandhok. Something which has pissed off Bruno Senna to no ends.

There's also a possibility of a qualifying split in Monaco - here's the article. Kind of makes sense to me.

The FIA is to be asked to consider introducing a one-off split qualifying session for next weekend's Monaco Grand Prix because of fears about traffic problems at the street event.

With just one week to go ahead of Formula 1's blue riband event, a number of drivers have expressed some concerns that the large lap time differential between the frontrunners and backmarkers on the narrow track could cause dangers in the opening Q1 session.

HRT's Bruno Senna, whose car will be one of the slowest in the field, has revealed that he plans to speak to FIA race director Charlie Whiting in Friday's drivers' briefing in Spain to put forward the idea of splitting the field up.

That would entail removing the frontrunners - who are all but guaranteed getting through Q1 – from the session entirely to minimise the possibility of a big name getting caught out or an accident taking place.

"We have to discuss this with Charlie, how are we going to do it – especially with qualifying," said Senna in the HRT motorhome in Barcelona on Thursday. "There are a few things we need to go through with Charlie tomorrow and perhaps in Monaco after first practice.

"The idea of splitting the field is not a bad one to be honest. If they take six or eight cars from the group of the fastest cars, or slowest cars, and the other guys go in a different qualifying, it will probably be a good idea for both people.

"We don't want someone much faster than us coming to overtake us, and they don't want to be every lap getting someone slower. Let's see how the time schedules go. I suppose it would be possible."

The idea of a one-off to split Q1 is Lotus driver Jarno Trulli's preferred option for sorting the situation out.

"From my perspective I think it's very hard - for me that I'm slow as well as for guys in front who are very quick," he said when asked by AUTOSPORT about the situation.

"I would think that somehow the FIA should think to split us. I don't know how to approach it but I think 24 cars on track is going to be hard. It's really going to be hard. We really have to manage it in a good way. I don't know if it's right or wrong but maybe they should consider it."

He added: "Split it any way you want, it's not up to me, but if the teams can agree, let's agree. Because otherwise we'll start complaining over that. So it's better to sort it out before than making a big mess after."

Renault's Robert Kubica reckons the traffic problems in Monaco would be greater this year than they had been in the past.

"Traffic is a normal problem," he said. "It has always been very difficult in Monaco in the past, although I have to say I was always lucky, or always in the position to set my lap time without any troubles in Monaco, which is not easy.

"But this year with three teams who are much slower pace, it will be much more difficult. I have been racing in Monaco before with splitting qualifying and there are some advantages and some disadvantages, but for sure we will need some solutions.

"On the other hand, it will be very difficult to get everybody happy with one solution, so I think it is a bit of a difficult topic. I think it will be quite tricky."

Finally - Ferrari have removed their alleged subliminal advertising for Marlboro witihin their 'barcode' design from their cars.

Pirelli have officially submitted their bid to be solo tyre suppliers from 2011, stating that they believe that a tyre way could prove unsafe and unbeneficial for the next 2 years at least. And when asked who he feared most in Barcelona this weekend, Vettel replied "the weather". Arrogant? Anyway...

Fallout from Friday session:

- Ferrari to keep their new F-duct system on their cars this weekend.

- Red Bull, more specifically Mark Webber, reckons that the McLaren's hid their true speed. We'll wait and see. Hamilton and McLaren to "remain wary" of the Red Bull's speed.

- However, Alonso doesn't reckon anyone will be able to catch the RBR's this weekend.

- Schumi says he is feeling a lot more confident in his 'upgraded ' Mercedes with its longer wheelbase.

- FIA's Charlie Whiting has told the drivers that only their teams can approve for changes to be made to the qualifying sessions at next week's Monaco Grand Prix. However the decision must be unanimous.

Hispania's Karun Chandhok and both Virgin drivers will drop back five grid places, Chandhok for changing his gearbox, and Virgin because they "failed to inform governing body the FIA which gear ratios they were intending to fit within the permitted two-hour time limit from the end of Friday practice." Also Petrov did some series damage to his car via the barriers this morning and had to change his gearbox so he too now has a five grid place penalty. No reason for him not to as long as he gets off to a good start.

FOTA have held meetings with Bridgstone representatives in Barcelona this weekend to try and convince them to stay in F1 in 2011. They have also moved to ban f-ducts/j-switches from 2011.

There's still 14 laps to go on the Australian feed, Guess the local channel started it late.

The second session saw more issues in the light rain with traffic than the morning had, including an incident in the final corners where Massa appeared to be hanging back to get a clear lap and was caught by Heikki Kovalainen on a flying lap, with the Lotus diving inside the Ferrari and past into the last turn, seemingly to Massa's surprise.

Kovalainen passing Massa was awesome. I think it's looking surprisingly good for Ferrari, they've really stepped it back up the past couple of races, although why Massa is doing so poorly in comparison with Alonso, I dunno. Kubica looks good this weekend, he's really come alive in this Renault and is driving it with everything he's got, which isn't good news for Massa since his contract is up this year. Most impressive thing is that Kubica's on 44 points so far this season, which is only 6 behind Rosberg and 5 behind Hamilton/Massa (and a huge 22 ahead of Schumi who's the cloest one behind him). He's been consistent (Australia ignored, when he got caught up with Sutil on the first lap) and that 2nd in China was very handy...I'd definitely be willing to put money on him getting on the podium this weekend. He goes well around here too from memory (was it 2008 when he led for a while ahead of Massa?)

Apparently, Senna's car is damaged still from his crash in Catalunya, and the team don't actually have the spare parts necessary to fully repair it, which is why he's so far behind everyone else. Bit of a poor show from Dallara, it seems they really fucked up the car for Hispania which ain't really fair on them (although how much money Dallara got is a big question). I would also like to point out the fun fact that Karun Chandhok is second in the driver's table from the new teams, behind Kovalainen.

Webber just pips Kubica to pole but Kubica has been super impressive all weekend so he could very capitalise on any Red Bull mishaps. Speculation is that Massa could receive a penalty for impeding Button whilst the Brit was on a hot lap. Rosberg out-qualifies Schumacher yet again, Sutil fails to make Q3, and Petrov had a crash. All nicely set up for another Monaco classic.

Kubica demolished the track during qualifying. Just shows how great the Renault car handles, and how much of an absolutely talented driver Kubica is. For a car that is WELL off the top-end pace as the top cars, he has performed so damn well. Monaco is perfect for the car too, as it doesn't need the top end.

Michael Schumacher was handed a 20-second penalty for overtaking Fernando Alonso on the final corner of the race. He passed him just as the safety car had left the circuit on the final lap, but stewards deemed the race was still finishing under the safety car. Mercedes are appealing. But that was a seriously awesome race. I mean, it had everything. Spectacular crashes, overtaking, controversy, and a flawless drive from Webber once again. Impressive once again from Kubica (first lap aside), Alonso to a degree got very lucky thanks to Button's engine blowing on the second lap. Up next is Turkey in two long weeks!

It was an entertaining race, I'm delighted with the result. I'm happy Schumey got demoted but I feel it was the wrong decision. He is over the line and if this crap about it finishing under safety car anyway is true then why bother pulling it in? Everyone was under the impression we were back racing as soon as they cross the white line. But it lets in Buemi for a first point of the season so I'm happy :P

The United States Grand Prix will return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2012 after a deal was struck for a race to be held in Austin, Texas.

Following weeks of speculation about the potential return of a race in America, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone announced on Tuesday night that the event will take place from 2012 to 2021 on a new purpose-built facility in Austin.

Ecclestone said: "For the first time in the history of Formula 1 in the United States, a world-class facility will be purpose-built to host the event.

"It was thirty years ago that the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix was last held on a purpose-built permanent road course circuit in Watkins Glen, NY (1961-1980), which enjoyed great success.

"Since then, F1 has been hosted by Long Beach, Las Vegas, Detroit, Dallas and Phoenix all on temporary street circuits. Indianapolis joined the ranks of host cities in 2000 when they added a road course inside the famed oval.

"Lewis Hamilton won the last F1 United States Grand Prix in 2007, signalling the end to eight years at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This however, will be the first time a facility is constructed from the ground up specifically for F1 in the US."

The deal with Ecclestone has been put together by promoters Full Throttle Productions, and its managing partner Tavo Hellmund.

Speaking about the deal, which comes after speculation of events in New Jersey and New York State, Hellmund said: "This is a case of the right timing in the right place. As many Americans know, Austin has earned a reputation as one of the 'it' cities in the United States.

"We are extremely honoured and proud to reach an agreement with the F1 Commercial Rights Holder. We have been diligently working together for several years to bring this great event to Austin, the State of Texas and back to the United States. All parties involved have a great amount of trust and confidence in each other and are committed to establishing the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas as a prestigious global event."

No details have yet emerged about the track layout, or whereabouts in Austin the venue will be built.
