John Woo to Direct & Produce He-Man

Variety reports that Fox 2000 has set John Woo (Paycheck) to direct and produce He-Man, a live-action film based on the characters in Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" line of action figures. Adam Rifkin will adapt the screenplay.

Originally made into an animated series in 1983, the property was also adapted into a live-action film in 1987 called Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren as the hero and Frank Langella as Skeletor.

He-Man began life as Prince Adam, the hybrid of an Earthling and an Eternian. At the age of 18, he was taken to Castle Grayskull, where Adam received super powers. He-Man has a sidekick in the form of a tiger, Battle Cat, and a deadly enemy, Skeletor.

Woo is also attached to direct The Rock in the video game adaptation Spy-Hunter for Universal Pictures.

Parker and Stone Finally Win R-Rating for 'Team America'

Fans of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will have to wait until the DVD version of their latest film, Team America: World Police, is released before they find out how many splinters were removed from sex scenes featuring puppets in order to garner an R rating for the film. The two had said on Monday that they had reedited the film nine times in order to get the MPAA ratings board to back away from the NC-17 rating that it had initially imposed on the film. The tenth time, presumably, proved to be the charm. Robert Friedman, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group, told today's (Thursday) Los Angeles Times that the two filmmakers had altered "the level of sex, how often and how many positions and which positions. It was really all about the level, the positions and the intensity of the sex." The MPAA notice now says that the film is rated R "for graphic, crude, sexual humor; violent images and strong language all involving puppets."

Lost & Housewives Get Full Season Pick-Ups

The ABC Television Network has picked up two of the season's most successful freshmen series-Desperate Housewives and Lost-for the full season, it was announced today by Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Primetime Entertainment.

"'Desperate Housewives' and 'Lost' each bring something unique to the table, and we're thrilled that audiences responded from day one," Mr. McPherson said. "Creatively, these two shows only continue to get better."

Added Mark Pedowitz, president, Touchstone Television: "Success in our business starts with creators who are passionate about an idea. That vision is then embraced by hundreds of people who help bring it to life week-in and week-out. I am so proud of everyone associated with 'Lost' and 'Desperate Housewives,' for all their hard work and support, and we're ecstatic that viewers have responded so positively to their efforts."

A primetime soap with a truly contemporary take on "happily every after," Desperate Housewives takes a darkly comedic look at suburbia, where the secret lives of housewives aren't always what they seem.

On each of its broadcasts, ABC's Desperate Housewives has been the No. 1 TV program on Sunday night in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. The program is also the No. 1 new TV series of the new season in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. On its most recent telecast (10/17/04), the show hit new highs across the adult demos: Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54. On its series debut (10/3/04), Desperate Housewives attracted the largest audience for any ABC series debut in eight years and was its most watched drama debut in 11 years - since 9/17/96 (Spin City) and 9/21/93 (NYPD Blue), respectively. In its three airings, Desperate Housewives is bringing ABC 124% more Total Viewers (20.8 million vs. 9.3 million) and 131% more Adults 18-49 (9.0/21 vs. 3.9/9) to the time period than at a same point a year ago.

Stripped of everything, the 48 survivors of a horrific plane crash scavenge what they can from the plane for their survival. Some panic. Some pin their hopes on rescue. But the island holds many secrets, including the intense howls of the mysterious creatures stalking the jungle, which fill them all with fear. For four weeks in a row (all four of its telecasts), Lost has been the No. 1 program in its hour among viewers and young adults. On its most recent telecast (10/13/04), Lost ranked as the No. 1 TV program of the night in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. In addition, on the ame night the new drama drew its largest overall audience since its debut episode (9/22/04) and hit series highs in Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, Teens 12-17 and Kids 2-11. Compared to the first four weeks of last season, Lost has improved the hour for ABC by 6.1 million viewers (17.6 million vs. 11.5 million) and by 40% in Adults 18-49 (6.6/18 vs. 4.7/13).

The Grudge 2 on the Fast Track

With Columbia Pictures' The Grudge opening in the top spot with an unexpected $39.1 million (the horror thriller cost less than $10 million to make), talk has quickly turned to a possible sequel for the film. The Grudge was based on the director Takashi Shimizu's own Ju-On.

Producer Roy Lee tells Creature Corner that a follow-up is now very likely. "'The Grudge 2' is now being fast-tracked, as we speak, and we're now working on the details," Lee said.

He was also asked about The Ghost, a planned remake of the Korean movie Ryeong. "It's too early to say what our approach will be with 'The Ghost' because the writer, Craig Rosenberg, is currently shooting a movie called 'Half Light' and won't be able to start working on the script for The Ghost until he completes his film."

Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in The Grudge, which is about a murderous supernatural curse born of a grudge held by someone who dies angry. The curse passes like a virus to its victims.

Revolution Studios Enters The Fog

Revolution Studios has acquired rights to remake 1980 John Carpenter horror film The Fog, reports Variety. The Core and The Emperor's Club writer Cooper Layne will pen the script. Debra Hill and Carpenter, who wrote the original, will produce the remake with David Foster.

The original movie was set in Northern California, where a thick fog enshrouds the coastline. The fog is reminiscent of one 100 years before that wrecked a ship and drowned the seamen aboard. Sure enough, those salty dogs are back, mighty angry and out to kill whomever they find.

The Fog is forecast for a February production start.

Van Helsing & Dawn Top of the Crop

Universal Studios Homes Entertainment's Dawn of the Dead sold more than 1 million combined DVD and VHS units across the country Tuesday, the video's first day on store shelves, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The remake generated almost as much revenue as its $59 million domestic box office take earlier this year.

The top-selling home video in the week ended Oct. 24 was USHE's Van Helsing, which sold more than 4 million combined DVD and VHS units, generating an estimated gross of about $65 million. The Hugh Jackman-starrer was the nation's second-best rental title, generating an estimated $9.1 million during its first week.

Fox Home Entertainment's Garfield: The Movie sold nearly 3 million combined DVD and VHS units during its first week in release, generating an estimated $50 million in retail and rental consumer spending.

The nation's top rental title last week was Fox's The Day After Tomorrow, which earned an estimated $9.1 million for a 12-day haul of $19.8 million. The film has sold more than 6 million combined DVD and VHS unit to retail and rental outlets.

Fahrenheit 9/11 dipping one place to third on Video Store magazine's weekly rental chart, for a 19-day haul of $20.7 million.
