32. 'Welcome To California' by The Madden Brothers (25th October 2014)

33. 'F#a#infinite' by Godspeed You! Black Emperor (26th October 2014)

The Madden Brothers are a weird one for me. I generally like their music for the most part, but they're so beyond douchey and so hilariously faux punk that I'm more embarrassed to say I listen to Good Charlotte than almost any other band. On the plus side, this is about their music, and they've created something really quite enjoyable with leaving their punk roots, and going for something way more California pop as the album title suggests. There's some really good tracks, with the first half (it's split into two sides) being more upbeat, and the second being more emotional. 'Dear Jane' is a lovely track and the highlight from the first half, whilst 'Brother' or 'Love Pretender' are my picks from the second half.

GSYBE are a band I've heard of for years but had no interest in, but I wanted to listen tio something in the shower that would require minimal touching of my device to mark as a potential re-listen, so I went with this album. It's okay, but there's too much silence, and whilst the use of only three twenty minutes tracks really marks it as an album and not a collection of songs, it also prevents any particular movement standing out. The mid-point of the middle track 'East Hastings' was the part that stuck out for me, but really it's not an album where you can suggest a single track because it needs an album listen.

1. Pink Hearts, Yellow Moons by Dressy Bessy (1999)

2. Thinking of You... by Freakwater (2005)

Freakwater are an alt-country band who I discovered through a song, "My Old Drunk Friend," being featured on a Songza playlist that I got really into. That song is basically everything I love about country music; it's kind of shambling, filled with melancholy and regret, and is both catchy and super-straightforward. Like the previous album, I picked this up at a record store in Portland because it was cheap and I was like "hey, I like a song by this artist!" The album itself is... good? I think it's incredibly emotion-driven in terms of whether I enjoy it or not, because on Friday on my first listen I didn't like a lot of it but this morning I was in the right emotional space for sorrowful country ballads, which is what most of the album is. The problem, I think, is that so many of the songs just bleed together that even on multiple listens I don't think I can separate most of the songs from each other. That being said, there is a song that breaks from the mood of the others!

Best Track: "So Strange" is uptempo and catchy and about a shitty relationship and I am all about it. Love the staccato-ish chorus.

36. 'Milo Goes To College' by Descendents (27th October 2014)

37. 'Out of Step' by Minor Threat (27th October 2014)

My office is empty except for me today, so I wanted some background noise to stop me going mad and went with Brian Eno's Music For Airports. It's another album that requires a full album listen because of it's format. I'm actually quite enjoying that change at the moment, because you get so used to 10-15 single song tracks, it's nice to change it up once you get used to the alteration in pace. Album itself was okay, but nothing I can see myself listening to again.

Continued with background noise, I love the LOTR soundtrack when watching the film, and whilst the FOTR soundtrack isn't quite as epic as others, it is good listening. 'Concerning Hobbits' will always be the stand out track, but 'Amon Hen' is great too.

For lunch listening I decided to go punk, starting with Descendents who I know as a big influence on some of my favourite bands such as blink-182. Milo was a good album, nothing blew me away, but it was just a good piece of fun to waste twenty or so minutes on. 'I Wanna Be A Bear', 'Catalina' and 'Marriage' were the stand out tracks.

Second lunch listening I needed another short album to listen in my break, so I went punk again and to Minor Threat's only album. The only song I'd heard before this was 'Straight Edge', but I really liked it for what it was, and will likely check out Fugazi some time as a result. Some really great songs on there, but 'Betray' was my favourite track.

Matched my 'most listens in a day' record and it's only shy of 2PM. Can I squeeze in another before bed tonight? :o

38. 'The Last of Us Original Soundtrack' by Gustavo Santaolalla (27th October 2014)

Suck it, 5th of October!

Loved The Last of Us, and the ambience provided by the soundtrack was a big part of everything else I loved about it so I decided to see how it stood up alone. The title track and it's variants are my favourite picks, along with 'Vanishing Grace', 'All Gone', 'Home' and I could keep naming tracks but I won't. Naughty Dog soundtracks are always good reminders of the emotions experienced during the game and nice subtle soundtracks in general, I have Uncharted 1 and 2 songs in my regular rotation and need to get around to 3's soundtrack at some point.

39. 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News' by Modest Mouse (28th October 2014)

I've heard of Modest Mouse for years but have never once actually heard a single song to my knowledge. All those years wasted! I honestly didn't expect this album to live up to it's reputation, and whilst nothing on is really catchy, it's basically 14 songs and 2 musical interludes worth of really good listening. I'd imagine most of them will be growers too, which makes it even better.

35. 'Ten Thousand Fists' by Disturbed

36. 'Mutter' by Rammstein

37. 'Overexposed' by Maroon 5

38. 'Scream Aim Fire' by Bullet for My Valentine

39. 'Dark Horse' by Nickelback

40. 'So Wrong, It's Right' by All Time Low - Another contribution from my girlfriend. Enjoyable pop, nothing special though. I prefer it to the more recent stuff, mind.

41. 'Elliot Minor' by Elliot Minor - Listening to All Time Low got me into a pop vibe, so I dug out this from years ago. A few good tracks, but nothing revolutionary.

42. 'Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace' by Foo Fighters - Wonderful album. The Pretender is one of my all time favourite rock tracks, and it's backed up by great tracks such as Long Road to Ruin, Let It Die, and But, Honestly.

43. 'The '59 Sound' by The Gaslight Anthem - I understand it's appeal, but TGA don't really do it for me. A few songs get the occasional play when I want something more mellow, but it's not my type of thing.

44. 'The Trick to Life' by The Hoosiers - Back on the pop train, and it's following the same trend: A few I really like, and nothing special either side of it.

45. 'Swan Songs' by Hollywood Undead - I went through a phase of really liking this album a few years ago, so dug it out again. I like the mix of rock and rap, if the Linkin Park praise weren't an indication, so I enjoy it. There's a good mixture of tracks too.

46. 'Meteora' by Linkin Park - As I said, I like rap/rock. And Linkin Park. Numb is the obvious standout, but my personal favourite is Faint. Big love for Lying From You, Breaking the Habit, and Lying From You as well.

1. Pink Hearts, Yellow Moons by Dressy Bessy (1999)

2. Thinking of You... by Freakwater (2005)

3. Stay Gold by First Aid Kit (2014)

The first, but not the last, album from an act I discovered through EWB Eurovision. What surprised me was that even though the song that was in Eurovision, "Wolf," was pretty clearly folk-inspired, this album is full-on Americana. I love the sweeping strings and the production in general, especially on the title track where it really supports their great vocals. Best album from 2014 I've heard thusfar.

Best Track: "The Bell" is the kind of song I desperately wish I could be driving into the highlands, through the forest to. I need my car back.

37. Signals by Mallory Knox- Not bad, but nothing as good as their newest single, "Shout at the Moon."

38. ANNA by The Courteeners- Thought I'd done more of the Courteeners already but I digress. I like it, probably not as good as St Jude but perfectly acceptable nonetheless.

39. Happiness Ltd. by Hot Hot Heat- Not great, I liked "Let Me In" from Saints Row 2 but that's about it from that album. Wasn't bad enough that I'm completely ruling out listening to their other albums, but we'll see.

40. May Death Never Stop You by My Chemical Romance- Greatest Hits album, will probably listen to a couple of proper albums at some point.

41. Great Divide by Twin Atlantic- Some really good songs but I've listened to it too much this past week and all my thoughts are in a Scottish accent which isn't ideal. "Be a Kid" is a nice song.

42. Apocalyze by Crossfaith- Ahh, where would this list be without Japanese Metal? Who knows? It's not that bad actually, and I've even listened to it enough to have the opinion that their EP "Zion" is better.

I don't really know where I'm heading with this right now, I enjoyed Crossfaith but I'm not familiar with metal-electronicore sorts of things. So if anyone can recommend me something in a similar vein, that would be pretty sweet.

1) Perfume Genius 'Too Bright' - Interesting, not my usual cup of tea but his voice and the sparse use of instruments add up to a worthwhile listen.

I'd also not been aware that I'd heard one of his songs on the radio the other day, so that was a surprise.

Using Metacritic initially to get my first lot of albums to listen to.

2) Earth 'Primitive and Deadly' - Brilliant. Love the use of Mark Lanegan and a couple of other guest vocalists to just add an extra layer. Dark, but beautiful.

3) Jack Johnson 'From Here To Now To You' - checked this out after I saw Benji had listened to it. Like some Jack Johnson, but haven't listened to him in years. Interesting, more up tempo music that I really enjoyed.

4) Anthony and The Johnsons 'I Am A Bird Now' - this was perfectly fine, though not as good as I might have expected. 'Hope There's Someone' is still a killer song though.

5) Elliot Smith 'XO' - liked what I heard. Was busy marking so it was mostly being used as background music.

6) Mariachi El Bronx 'Mariachi El Bronx' - Just really fun. Always heard good things, but was skeptical heading in. Well worth a look.

7) Mariachi El Bronx 'Mariachi El Bronx (II)' - More of the same, just better.

8) The New Pornographers 'Brill Bruisers' - Was listening on the underground so was occasionally drowned out - what I heard was good. Catchy, fun pop.

9) The Bug 'Angels and Devils' - Felt the first half was better than the second half, but that is because the initial few songs appeal to my tastes much more.

I've part listened to a couple of albums as well, so will finish them off at some point.

10) Brand New 'Deja Entendu' - so much better than I expected. Hadn't fancied it when it first came out, but just much more versatile than I imagined

11) DFA 1979 'The Physical World' - liked their debut stuff, and this is more of the same. Some good, raucous electro-rock and roll.

12) Flying Lotus 'You're Dead' - a little bit mixed, wasn't sure what to expect and it hit the right spots in some areas. Quite unsure in general how I feel overall - worth a look I guess

13) The Melvins 'Hold It In' - brilliant new album from the Melvins - just real rock/metal shapeshifters in terms of sound - makes me want to get into more of their stuff.

14) The Melvins 'Houdini' - had heard a few songs before from this, but this is the first time through. A little heavier than their newest album, but with more standout moments. Very, very good.

15 The Melvins 'Eggnog (EP)' - just kept playing on through Spotify without me realising :shifty:

16) New Godflesh

17) Ryan Adams 'Ryan Adams'

18) Corrosion of Conformity 'IX'

Will give more thoughts later - this is a post more so I don't forget!

19) Crowbar 'Symmetry in Black'

20) Caribou 'Our Love'

21) Slipknot '.5 The Gray Chapter' - I've grown to like Slipknot more as they've developed away from the stupid, fairly pointless noise of their first couple of albums. This is a perfectly fine album, well worth my time.

22) Scott Walker and Sunn 0)))) 'Soused' - Just brilliant, never having really listened to Scott Walker before. The mix of his unique vocals and the haunting sound of Sunn 0)))) just works for me.

23) Mark Lanegan Band 'Phantom Radio' - Mark Lanegan may be slowly moving towards one of my favourite vocalists, I just love his voice. Had this on in the background more than anything, but a perfectly enjoyable rock record.

Never actually heard an LDR song to my knowledge prior to this. Hauntingly beautiful stuff. The entire album is so fantastically understated. Lana's voice is just so sultry that you practically feel like you should be in a smoky lounge listening to it, and it never needs to go beyond the seemingly effortless vocals she puts in. You get so used to pop these days being in your face and singers trying to belt out as much as they can that you almost forget that singers like Lana can exist in popular music. Really liked it. I kind of feel guilty naming specific songs as the best because Best songs were 'Off To The Races', 'National Anthem' and 'Radio'.

47. 'Living Things' by Linkin Park - Gave it another listen since I told Benji I would. I don't think it's as bad as I made it out to be. Found myself not hating it. Castle of Glass is still my favourite track by a fair distance though.

48. 'The Sound of Madness' by Shinedown - I absolutely love this album. I've got the Deluxe Edition which has a few awesome bonus tracks (Son of Sam and Diamond Eyes) but the general aggression coupled with a few really beautiful slower songs makes it wonderful to listen to.

Think that's me finished on Linkin Park unless I look at the remix albums and all the LPUnderground stuff (which I have). Will probably do something similar to what I did with the CC&TB EPs and merge it into one 'Underground' album or something.

1. Pink Hearts, Yellow Moons by Dressy Bessy (1999)

2. Thinking of You... by Freakwater (2005)

3. Stay Gold by First Aid Kit (2014)

4. Bona Drag by Morrissey (1990)

First of all, it's a compilation album, which I didn't know when I bought it from a Half-Price Books a couple months ago. I just saw "Suedehead" on it and was like "oh sweet, I love that song and I like The Smiths alright." I did not mean to include non-soundtrack compilation albums on this! HIPSTER OUTRAGE. The fact that it's a compilation probably helps to explain why it doesn't really feel cohesive as an album on multiple listens; it starts well and then after "Last of the Famous International Playboys" it descends into a mire of songs that are samey (or just kind of laughable, 'sup "Ouija Board, Ouija Board") up until "Suedehead." It was worth the money I spent on it, though, and it ends with a crowd cheering the possibility that Morrissey will never sing a song again and then booing him when he changes his mind, which is delightful.

Best Track That Isn't "Suedehead:" "Interesting Drug" actively improved for me upon relistens so let's say that!

Ezra's album was one that really surprised me, expected a pretty bland album but got a lot of catchy, good songs and worth another listen. Turn Blue was good, and while I miss the raw blues sound of early Black Keys, their sound is still as good as ever. The actual song "Turn Blue" or "Weight of Love" are the highlights. Camp was decent, a better rap album than to "Because the Internet" but "Because the Internet" is still the better album.

3. Stay Gold by First Aid Kit (2014)

4. Bona Drag by Morrissey (1990)

5. Comedown Machine by The Strokes (2013)

Hmm, I dunno. This one's interesting because it's not a BAD album but it's the first Strokes album I've ever heard that doesn't have a standout track. Even First Impressions of Earth had one ("You Only Live Once," and maybe "Juicebox"), and that album was mostly awful. With this one, there are a bunch of songs, and some of them sound like they could be on Is This It and some of them sound like they could be on Room on Fire and some of them sound like they could be on Angles and all of them sound like they'd be the weaker tracks on any of those albums. Like I'd still say First Impressions is the worst Strokes album but this is a pretty solid second.

Best Track: I do like "Chances," which is pretty chill and dream-like, though the vocals mostly do nothing for me except for this one weird moment where it sounds like Sigur Ros for all of three seconds or so.

Decided to give a listen to Reuben after the number of times it was on New Damage's list. If you really need to wake up on the way to work, then I recommend this. Otherwise, I didn't enjoy it, I guess I don't like the fusion between alternative and heavy metal. Interesting concept, but I found that the vocals grated on me.

I always thought that The 1975 would sound similar to Royal Blood, I was wrong there. The 1975 sound like Scouting for Girls. I do not like Scouting for Girls. Disappointed with the album after hearing the hype around them.

Everything clicks with Them Crooked Vultures, a brilliant supergroup with some great and memorable tracks. I would love to see a second album by the trio but it seems that Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age are the focus at this current time. Shame.
