  2. AND THE FINAL THREE: 3rd Metallica's Master of Puppets When it was released, Master of Puppets provided many metal fans with an alternate image to the commercially visible pop metal sounds of the era (Poison, Mötley Crüe, and Quiet Riot) - it sold over half a million copies at its time of release without any major video/radio airplay. The album is often credited for innovating thrash metal, while also frequently being tagged by critics as 'one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time.' The band's line-up during the album's recording was James Hetfield (vocals, guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Kirk Hammett (lead guitar), and the late Cliff Burton (bass). The album is remembered in part due to the death of Burton shortly after the release of the album in a bus accident while supporting it on the Damage Inc. Tour. With Master Of Puppets, Metallica innovated the thrash metal scene by adding a high level of complexity to the songs, melodic sounds (most notably in Battery, Master Of Puppets and Orion) that showed some similarities with power metal and progressive metal, playing an important role for the later post-thrash creation. 2nd Metallica's Metallica (The Black Album) The Black Album was a controversial album amongst fans of the band. While the album and the band were critically and commercially praised, some fans expressed disappointment and even outrage at the new direction taken by Metallica. Gone, for the most part, were the faster staccato riffs during verses and throaty screaming found on the first four albums. The Black Album presented a more radio-friendly, commercially accessible Metallica, evidenced by the ballad "Nothing Else Matters". Moreover, following the success of "One," the breakaway single from their ...And Justice For All album, five videos were released from the Black Album. ("Enter Sandman", "Nothing Else Matters", "Sad But True", "Wherever I May Roam" and "The Unforgiven"). The Black Album stands as a dividing point for Metallica fans. Its supporters claim that it is still a "heavy" album. Songs as "Holier Than Thou", "Through The Never", and "The Struggle Within" and showing Metallica still had elements of the 'thrash' genre's strict limitations on what is "metal" and what is not. On the other hand, detractors pointed at the ballads "Nothing Else Matters" and "The Unforgiven" as signs that Metallica were more interested in commercial gain, than they were in catering exclusively to their original underground fan base. The lyrics of the Black Album were much more personal and introspective in nature (from the singer and lyricist James Hetfield - a trait that would continue on subsequent Metallica albums). For example, "The God That Failed" dealt with his mother's death from cancer and her Christian Science beliefs which kept her from seeking medical treatment. "Nothing Else Matters" expresses the connection he felt with his soulmate while out on the road. The album also ended Metallica's tradition of including a lengthy instrumental track on each album. When the song "Enter Sandman" was ranked by VH1 as one of the greatest metal songs of all time, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian criticized people who claimed Metallica sold out by saying, "Why? Just because 10 million people went out and bought this record?" 1st Guns N' Roses' Appetite For Destruction Appetite for Destruction was rock and roll band Guns N' Roses' debut album. Beginning with the hit "Welcome to the Jungle", Appetite for Destruction combined elements of metal, punk rock, blues and classic, anthemic choruses. The album was a #1 American hit and worldwide sales exceeded 25 million. It is an RIAA Certified Diamond Album. While the songwriting credits are indiscriminately credited to all five band members, many of the songs were solo tracks that individual band members wrote in the pre-GNR era. These songs include "It's So Easy" and "Nightrain" (McKagan), "Mr. Brownstone", "Anything Goes" and "Think About You" (Stradlin). "Rocket Queen" and "Paradise City" were unfinished Rose/McKagan and Rose/Stradlin demos respectively that the band fleshed out in its early days. Other songs on the album reflect the band's reaction to the debauchery of the L.A. rock and roll underground, such as "Welcome to the Jungle" (ironically, Axl Rose wrote the lyrics while in Seattle) and "Out Ta Get Me", as well their assorted female companions, reflected in the songs "Sweet Child O' Mine", "My Michelle", and "You're Crazy." The album is among the best selling albums in history; at least 15 million copies were sold in United States alone. However, one year after it was released in 1987, the album had sold only 500,000 copies. MTV refused to play any Guns N' Roses videos because of the album's original cover. Based on the Robert Williams painting Appetite for Destruction, it depicted a robot rapist about to be punished by a toothy metal avenger. The band compromised and put the original cover art inside, replacing it with a cover depicting a cross and skulls of the five band members (Rose has this design tattooed on his right forearm), somewhat like Grateful Dead album artwork. This compromise was not good enough for MTV, and the network continued the video ban. Finally, David Geffen, then- president of Geffen Records called MTV and begged them to play the Welcome to the Jungle video. MTV agreed to play it once, at 2 o'clock in the morning. The song became MTV's #1 most requested song in 24 hours. In 2001, Q magazine named Appetite for Destruction as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums Of All Time. In 2003, the TV network, VH1, named Appetite for Destruction the 42nd greatest album of all time. Rolling Stone ranked it at #61 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The text was modified from Wikipedia entrys. Also notice, The first post because an album was left out by accident.....No one commented that there were only 24 albums...

  8. CLOSED, AND TO BE SORTED...First entrys in the list, should appear in a new thread, within a couple of hours (I've already got most of the votes sorted).
  9. New Rules apply. They've been put up on the top post, but I'll post them here too. 2. The second time an album appears on the list it garners 2 extra points. The third time it garners 3 extra points, this pattern continues up until the tenth time it appears on a list it garners 9 bonus points. Everytime after this it garners another 9 bonus points. This is an attempt to make it more of a consensus of EWB, then just what people voted into their first place. 9. These rules are subject to change at any time. But they will be changed for good reason THIS PREDICTION THREAD CLOSES: MIDNIGHT GMT 11/04/06 I thought I should add number 9 seeing as it changed a couple of times now.....lol . Anyways this should be the last change to the rules, and this prediction thread closes in a weeks time. Keeping on voting. Remember you can change your votes as long as the last edit is before the closing time. Oh and my album picks are about to change well I look over all your guys lists to see what should have made my list.
  10. Through general consensus, Block Votes have been taken out. All block votes which appear in this thread will be ignored. Also their is a slight change in the points system please see the first post to see more. Hopefully after all this effort from everyone, this list will work itself out.
  11. This will now be a top 25 album list, as I think it will help the legitimacy of the list. I'll also be thinking about the point system in the next couple of hours, Steve Mandela has an interesting idea, but I'll probably chop it up a bit, and change it a bit. I'll edit this post, and the first post with the rule changes. And also, can I get a general consensus of block votes....Yay, or Nay. Include your opinion when you post your votes.
  12. The Pogues - Fairytale of New York And any of the Looney Tunes' "Have a Looney Tunes Christmas", that album is just class .
  13. EDIT: PLEASE NOTICE THE NEW RULES. I HAVE TRIED TO FOLLOW THE GENERAL CONSENSUS, SO HERE GOES NOTHING. THE CHANGES HAVE BEEN BOLDED. Okay, this has probably been done before, but I think it's an interesting premise, so I'm going to do it. So Without a do: EWB Top 25 Albums Rules: Everybody can vote for up to ten albums. Rank this album from 1 to 10, and the points will be as follows: 1st Place gets 10 points 2nd Place gets 9 points 3rd Place gets 8 points 4th Place gets 7 points 5th Place gets 6 points 6th Place gets 5 points 7th Place gets 4 points 8th Place gets 3 points 9th Place gets 2 points 10th Place gets 1 point The second time an album appears on the list it garners 2 extra points. The third time it garners 3 extra points, this pattern continues up until the sixth time it appears on a list it garners 5 bonus points. Everytime after this it garners another 5 bonus points. This is an attempt to make it more of a consensus of EWB, then just what people voted into their first place. You don't have to vote for ten albums, and if you don't I'll just count the ones you count, with their specific rankings. If you vote for over ten albums, I will only count the first ten in your post. You have NO block Votes. Any block votes casted will be ignored. You can only put an album on your list once, any repeat albums will only be counted by their first ranking. You can change your voting right up to the closing date/time which will be edited into this post at a later time, but will be roughly a week and a half away. It's up to you whether you put your favourite albums of the moment, or your favourite albums of all time. It's up to you guys, you make the list. Once this is done, I will do the typical thread revealing the results well you guys bitch about what should/shouldn't have made the album. However I won't drag this thread out. These rules are subject to change at any time. But they will be changed for good reason THIS PREDICTION THREAD CLOSES: MIDNIGHT GMT 11/04/06 That is all.....And here are my votes, which are likely to change as I see what you guys vote for: 01) Meat Loaf - Bat out Of Hell 02) Metallica - The Black Album 03) Meat Loaf - Dead Ringer 04) Tool - Lateralus 05) The Beatles - Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band 06) Nirvana - In Utero 07) System of a Down - System of a Down 08) Jeff Buckley - Grace 09) Metallica - Kill 'Em All 10) System of a Down - Toxicity Honorable Mentions, that have been knocked off the list for some reason or another: AC/DC - Let There Be Rock The Black Dahlia Murder - Unhallowed Metallica - S&M
