    Best of both

At first I thought of posting something like: "What the hell is the point in evaluating bands you have no interest in or knowledge about?". For the majority of these bands, I only know a couple of (hit) songs by each. Not too many full albums at all. Not exactly the fairest way to start comparing them to another band. But then I thought 'what the hell' it's not that serious and it's only another thread in an online forum. Might as well post my thoughts. Metallica or Megadeth?: I like thrash, but I'm not a huge fan of either band here. Testament and Annihilator are my favourites. Having said that, I own 5 Metallica CD's and only 3 Megadeth ones, so I suppose Metallica takes it. Nirvana or Pearl Jam?: This isn't really even my opinion, but my girlfriend's, who absolutely loves Nirvana. So I trust her judgment on this one. I personally don't really care - Nirvana doesn't sound that special to me. And Pearl Jam? I don't remember if I've ever managed to go through a full album. I can only really remember random songs like Jeremy and Black (?) and the Neil Young cover. So it's not such a difficult decision in the end. Guns N' Roses or Motley Crue?: I like glam, but neither of these bands are really the stuff I'm into. These two are the biggest names and are pretty even in my eyes, but I suppose I have to pick Guns'n'Roses. Appetite for Destruction > Shout at the Devil. Bullet For My Valentine or Trivium?: I don't really know Bullet For My Valentine. There was a video on tele, but I have no recollection of the song or the melody. I do know Trivium, and I don't especially like them. But I still have to pick them. At least I can remember their songs after hearing them. And they do at times sound like Overkill or one of the 'real' thrash bands. Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly?: Wow. I don't remember hearing a single song by either group. I probably have, but I just cannot remember and the names say nothing to me. Are they among the new 'hip' bands? I pick Flogging Molly for absolutely no reason. The Pogues or The Clash?: I don't really know the Pogues all that well. They had some hit songs when I was a kid, but that's all. But at least they don't offend me as much as listening to the Clash. So I'm picking the Pogues based only on not liking the Clash. Bring Me The Horizon or Job For A Cowboy?: Are those band names? If so, Job For A Cowboy is the better name. And band. Clearly. Towers of London or Hardcore Superstar?: Another dilemma. I have never heard of the Towers of London. Hardcore Superstar I know from TV. Never heard a single album. If we're talking about the same Swedish group with funny hair and leather, that is. I don't really know how I am supposed to vote for or against either one. But I just did. Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton?: At first I was thinking 'better as songwriters or as guitarists?'. But then I realized they were both only mediocre songwriters, so I'll go with the more inspired guitarist, which is Hendrix. Slipknot or Stone Sour?: I only found out about Stone Sour about a week ago. My girlfriend made me watch their videos. Apparently one of the masked clowns of Slipknot is in the band. I also found out they kind of suck, at least on those couple of songs I saw. But that doesn't mean they can't get my vote here. I always thought Slipknot was the worst joke in heavy metal. Faith No More or Rage Against The Machine?: I don't like rap-metal, so I never really got into RATM. I did hear Angel Dust by Faith No More. Their vocalist sounds very dull. Oasis or Radiohead?: Not completely familiar with either. I only heard What's The Story Morning Glory and OK Computer. I actually prefer the Oasis album. Or I think I do - it's been awhile since I heard it. Late 90's or something. I had this friend who was into britpop and anytime I went to his place to smoke weed, I had to listen to stuff like that. Anyway, thinking of all the other random songs I've heard and videos I've seen, Radiohead gets slightly ahead. Sex Pistols or The Ramones?: I have always kind of enjoyed hearing Ramones songs. Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with their full albums. And the Sex Pistols... well, there isn't much material to be familiar with. Just that one album that I never liked. Less Than Jake or Reel Big Fish?: Another pair I know nothing about. Limp Bizkit or Puddle of Mudd?: Yeah, okay. I don't really know either of these bands either. You have to understand musically I'm stuck in the 80's. Limp Bizkit I know mostly from non-musical factors. And I can probably recognise a song or two. Puddle of Mudd... the name sounds familiar. Songs? Don't ask me. And if they sound anything like Limp Bizkit, I will not be running to the record store to hear their albums. Panic! At The Disco or Fall Out Boy?: Right. Again too contemporary. I never watch MTV or listen to the radio (if these bands ever get played on the radio anyway, that is). But whatever, it's hard to say much here. I think I saw Panic at the Disco on Conan some time ago. I changed the channel. Anthrax or Slayer?: I loved Anthrax's Spreading the Disease, but looking at overall back catalogues, you must pick Slayer. Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss are all probably in my top ten thrash albums. Rise Against or Anti-Flag?: I don't know Rise Against. Anti-Flag is a punk rock band. I don't like punk. Rise Against wins. Now, don't come here saying Rise Against is a punk band, too - I really don't care. I just needed some random criteria in choosing the better band. And by saying I don't know anything one or both of the bands have done, my opinion doesn't really matter anyway. So random criteria is perfectly logical. Hinder or Buckcherry?: Ehh... contemporary music. I choose the first band. I'll be back later... Blink 182 or Sum 41?: My Chemical Romance or Lostprophets?: Linkin Park or Papa Roach?: Avenged Sevenfold or Eighteen Visions?: Good Charlotte or Green Day?: Alter Bridge or Creed?: SOiL or Drowning Pool?: Ill Nino or Shadows Fall?: Nightwish or Within Temptation?: Foo Fighters or Queens of the Stone Age?: The Verve or Coldplay?: Avril Lavigne or Kelly Clarkson?:
  3. The new Judas Priest. Nostradamus, or whatever it's going to be called.
  4. Blind Guardian - Imaginations from the Other Side Perfect epic metal. The title track is the best song ever written. Savatage - The Wake of Magellan The best concept album I know of. First of all, I really love Savatage, and this album has moments from the earlier, heavier 'Tage mixed with the more operetic approach of the Zakk Stevens era. Vocal duties are also again shared between Oliva and Stevens, like in Dead Winter Dead, and that makes it that much more operetic. The storytelling is great here - a great collection of songs and they flow well together. Very diverse but still pleasant to listen to. Wake Of Magellan is easily one of my favourite albums ever.
  5. The opening scene of Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. Aka "Kickapoo".
  6. Iron Maiden | Judas Priest Dio | Testament Blind Guardian | Savatage | Iced Earth Skyclad | Axxis | Pink Cream 69 Not in order of preference, but an order I could realistically see these bands billed. Angel Dust would have definitely been on the list, but I suppose they are not really that active anymore. At least not with Dirk Thurisch. Savatage is probably the same, but replace them with Chris Caffery if you want to nitpick.

    Live Acts

Why would you even want singers/bands to sound the same live they do on CD? If you wanted that, you could just play the CD.
  8. MY GOD!!! I really thought that I was the only person who listened to Savatage!! THere is my vote for most UNDERATED Metal Band ever!! Top 3? 1. Metallica 2. Megadeth 3. Pantera
  9. That makes little to no sense to me. Why "dump" those two storied franchises... then just replace them with one of the contracted teams? I don't think the Presidents, GM's, Cities, or Fans would like that.
  10. Meh. 90s music is too recent for me.
  11. If you like the heavy stuff, check out Deep Purple - In Rock & Machine Head Rainbow - all three of their 70s albums Uriah Heep - Demons & Wizards Blue Öyster Cult - Agents of Fortune Nazareth - Hair of the Dog Van Halen - VH
  12. Been away from the boards a bit, but I like the discussion here. My favourite band is of course: One Child Handful of Rain Gutter Ballet Edge of Thorns Hall of the Mountain King Jesus Saves
  13. What a fucking disgraceful performance by the Hawks again. 1-7 in San Jose. Aucoin and Cullimore are totally useless and should never E-E-E-EVER see NHL ice... again. Lalime was crap, too. Cam Barker... the list goes on. Everyone was so bad it was embarrassing. I blame Savard, too - you just don't ALLOW such a performance on the ice. The team just wasn't prepared to play. Shots were 16-2 Fish after first. And dammit, Koci couldn't even find a dance partner. Stupid Rainbow Trouts...
  14. You can't even compare the Simon slash to the Janssen hit. The Janssen hit was clean, just late. Didn't even deserve a suspension, in my opinion. However, Simon used his stick as a weapon and there was intent to injure. 25 games seems about right.
  15. David Koci has arrived! My new favourite player. He is a monster. 6'6" 238lbs Czech defenseman filling in on injured James Wisniewski. The Hawks have been needing toughness desperately - Koci leads AHL in penalties despite only having played 39 games. And what an impact he's already made with the Hawks. 2:52 48 D. KOCI 5:00 Fighting (maj) 9:30 48 D. KOCI 2:00 Roughing 15:04 48 D. KOCI 5:00 Fighting (maj) 42:50 48 D. KOCI 5:00 Charging (maj) 42:50 48 D. KOCI 10:00 Game misconduct 42:50 48 D. KOCI 5:00 Fighting (maj) 42:50 48 D. KOCI 10:00 Game misconduct One blocked shot, big hits, three fights and 42 PIM's with just 2:31 of ice time in his NHL debut. And the Hawks win 7-5. Just what the team needed. Koci vs Josh Gratton Round 1 Koci vs Josh Gratton Round 2 He has to stay up even after the West coast road trip. Who wouldn't want to see Koci play?
  16. About damn time! I thought it would never happen, but tonight Khabibulin finally earned his first shutout as a Blackhawk. Hawks beat the Kings 3-0. Khabby is the highest paid player in the history of the franchise and had a 110-game streak without a shutout going for him, so I can only imagine how good it must be to finally get that giant monkey off his back. If I was him, I'd ride around on my sports car and bang some hot supermodels tonight. Wait... that'd be a normal weekday for an NHLer. Anyway, good for him. And for the Hawks. Nice win. Seabrook played great. Hitting lots and getting two assists to boot - he is going to be the next captain of this team, for sure. The Sharpshooter Patrick Sharp also got two goals tonight. But yeah, it was Khabby's night.
  17. I think the Neil hit was clean and the Janssen hit a minor penalty at max, no suspension. Saying you shouldn't take advantage of players who have their heads down opens another can or worms: you're indirectly telling non-physical youth hockey players they should keep their heads down so no-one is allowed to hit them. Just like Todd Harvey used to turn his back on players so he could draw a penalty for checking from behind. Hockey is a contact sport and there's always the chance someone's going to lay a hit on you. Keep your eyes open and play the game. Seriously, there wouldn't be any of this talk if the hits didn't result in injuries. And that's also wrong - players constantly finish their checks after a player has passed the puck and you shouldn't be penalized for hitting harder than other players. Obviously, if you have a problem with a player running your guys, you start hitting back. Even better, dress an enforcer to keep Janssen busy. That's the balance of power. If Belak fought Janssen, he wouldn't need to go running around looking for other ways to make himself useful. And even knowing they have a tough guy on the bench would make him less inclined to start up shit, knowing he can retaliate by running your guys. Imagine you're Cam Janssen, enforcer. Pre-game, you see the Leafs have no toughness on their roster. What do you do? He doesn't have the skills to just play a non-physical game and float. He needs to play the way he knows and take advantage of the other team's weakness. Otherwise he is useless and ends up being scratched. Maybe next time the Leafs call up a guy to protect their players? The way I see it is that the Leafs got what they had coming to them for dressing a pussy lineup. Buffalo had the muscle to strike back and let the Senators know it's not okay to do that. Toronto had nothing and they just have to suck it up. Much like how the Blackhawks have had to do all season, no matter how hard the opponents hit the injury-prone Ruutu. And I blame Dale Tallon for that.
  18. Watching the Blackhawks play makes my penis soft.
  19. I suppose. Hawks are 0-6 against the stupid Wings and I just realized the season series isn't even over yet. There's two more games. I've said it before, but as long as they are going to lose anyway, Tallon should recall Low, Koci or Fraser to at least make the Wings feel like they earned their points with some bruises. Or even Matt Keith or Adam Burish for some grit. It's so embarrassing to see a bunch of players wear the indian head with no heart and no pride.
