  1. This thread is kind of difficult for me. Not because it's difficult to come up with cover versions that fit the description, but because I'm a huge fan of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and keep buying tribute and cover compilations by a bunch of no-name groups that think they can do justice to Priest and Maiden classics. I wouldn't even know where to start. Maiden must be the most covered band in the world. Here's a good list of Maiden tribute albums. I've managed to hunt down a significant amount of them, and I genuinely like a lot of the songs on a lot of the compilations, but there's at least 50 or so cover versions I could list that should not have been recorded.
  2. Chuck Berry (rock'n' roll guitar) Elvis Presley (the king) The Beatles (Beatlemania) James Brown (the grandfather) Led Zeppelin (Plant, Page and Bonham all hugely influenced how rock music would be performed in the years after) Black Sabbath (heavy metal) David Bowie (I was going to put KISS here, but I think Bowie had a bigger influence on glam... or maybe T-Rex) Michael Jackson (the music video era, dance moves) two more... eh Bob Marley (for all the potheads) The Shirelles (the vocal group thing that came big again in the 90s - see boy/girl bands)
  3. Deep Purple Blue Öyster Cult Thin Lizzy Uriah Heep Rainbow Iron Maiden
  4. The fourth Circle II Circle album, entitled Delusions of Grandeur, is set to be released on April 25, 2008.
  5. I like the few Rage albums that I've heard. Especially the older, more thrashy albums, like Perfect Man.
  6. Jon Oliva's Pain - Global Warning (comes out March 21st) Iced Earth - Something Wicked pt 2 Blaze Bayley Skyclad Angel Dust Judas Priest - Nostradamus Heaven and Hell
  7. I can't stand the vocalist. Loved Joey Comeau. Carnival Diablos and Waking the Fury are the finest thrash (or groove?) metal albums of the decade. Absolutely on par with any classic Annihilator album, ie. Alice in Hell or Never Neverland.

    Amy Winehouse

She looks like a starving latin Ethiopian boy.
  9. Metal-rules.com's top 20 metal albums of 2007. Here's the top 10 with personal comments in italics: 1. Nightwish - Dark Passion Play (I agree, liked it lots. Would have been my #3 pick) 2. Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos (didn't hear this one - haven't been following DT since Train of Thought, which I didn't like) 3. King Diamond - Give Me Your Soul... Please (didn't hear this either - the only KD I know is from the Dangerous Meeting compilation) 4. Amorphis - Dark Waters (quite good, although maybe not as good as Eclipse and maybe not a top ten album) 5. Behemoth - The Apostasy (haven't heard) 6. Gamma Ray - Land of the Free pt 2 (one of my favourites - only second to the new Chris Caffery) 7. Megadeth - United Abominations (didn't hear. Kind of haven't been into Megadeth that much for over a decade now. I remember listening to Youthanasia when it first came out...) 8. Helloween - Gambling with the Devil (a very nice release, great solos, borderline top ten or maybe low teens) 9. Iced Earth - Framing Armageddon (another good entry - quite a difficult release to get into though. I'd probably rank it just outside the top ten) 10. Symphony X - Paradise Lost (didn't hear)
  10. CDs. Playing them and playing with them is fun.
  11. First: Metallica - Metallica Last: Axxis - Doom of Destiny

    Best Albums of 2007

Regarding Nightwish: I never really liked Tarja's singing anyway. And I haven't even heard the new Symphony X, sorry. Maybe I should, but lately I've been into more straight forward music.

    Best Albums of 2007

I think so far my top ten would look something like this: 1. Chris Caffery - Pins and Needles 2. Gamma Ray - Land of the Free pt.2 3. Nightwish - Dark Passion Play 4. Therion - Gothic Kabbalah 5. Helloween - Gambling with the Devil 6. HIM - Venus Doom 7. Type O Negative - Dead Again 8. Saxon - The Inner Sanctum 9. Axxis - Doom of Destiny 10. Kotipelto - Serenity
  14. Couldn't someone else tally the votes from the other thread and finish up this one already? That 'someone else' being someone else but me.
  15. Damn, forgot this whole thread existed. Here's a summary of the Hawks early season: - Toews and Kane are difference-makers and if all goes well, should both be on Calder voting at season's end. Especially Kane has surprised me positively, being so ready to play right after being drafted. Toews I knew was awesome having watched him dominate at the World Juniors. Ruutu - Toews - Kane has been the best line so far. - Havlat has some serious bad luck going against him. Luckily the Hawks ain't as dependant on him as they were last season. But when he comes back, the Hawks can ice three good lines. - Robert Lang is a lazy fuck, but he most definitely has the skills. Or maybe he is just so sneaky he only looks like he doesn't care. But damn, he scores lots. And it's all been without Havlat - imagine when you pair the two up. - Sergei Samsonov has certainly lost it. "It" being whatever people saw in him when he first broke out with the Bruins. At least he is trying though. He puts in an effort every night, but just doesn't get any results. Any chance someone will pick him up on waiver/re-entry? - Patrick Sharp and Rene Bourque are the most explosive PK duo in the league. Certainly made a difference Saturday night against the Wings. But not only then - Sharp has been extremely effective shorthanded all season. And Bourque has pretty much developed into a specialist by now. - The Hawks own the Wings. - Khabibulin has actually played well consistently. Can't even express how happy that makes me. - Hawks defense doesn't look like much on paper, but damn, James Wisniewski and Brent Sopel have both played very well. Sopel has been solid defensively, exceeding all expectations. Wizzy might be the best d-man in the team at the moment. Brent Seabrook hasn't really developed much from last year and neither has Duncan Keith. Zyuzin and Johansson have been total failures. But still better than Aucoin and Cullimore last year. - Adam Burish has stone hands. - I love David Koci. - I LOVE Rocky Wirtz. Or at least the fact that he is the owner and not his late father. Finally some actual promotion, finally some fresh air, finally no Bob Pulford and finally the fans don't have to feel sick to their stomachs knowing where the money they spend on the team goes.

    Songs About War

Oh yeah, how could I forget that one. A song from that album that is particularly describing war, and is not so much focused on the narrative of the story, is for instance "Starlight".
  17. The best release I've heard so far this year.

    Songs About War

I second the Motorhead song. And Iced Earth's "the Glorious Burden" album is basically all about historical conflicts.

    The BEST Song

The only song I can think of that has any sort of general approval is Stairway to Heaven. I personally don't think it's all that awesome. It's a good song, but nowhere near as epic as Savatage's "the Hourglass", but oh well.
  20. My general perception of Evanescence is negative. And I'm a huge fan of melodic metal. Why can't people like really good music like Savatage instead?

    Songs About War

Iron Maiden - Afraid to Shoot Strangers Iron Maiden - The Aftermath Iron Maiden - Fortunes of War Definitely fits the recollections/tales of war description. EDIT: oh yeah, and all the dog fight songs like 'Aces High' and 'Tailgunner'.
  22. Well, I don't think Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss and God Hates Us All, for instance, sound the same at all.
