  1. Blank CDs? How about he just stops ripping people off and actually purchases the license to sample those two albums? Then he could actually sell the product legitimately.
  2. A tree of some sort could help. Something like: Heavy Metal (proto metal) NWOBHM Glam Metal Power Metal Prog Metal Thrash Metal Death Metal Black Metal Doom Metal Goth Metal Industrial Metal Nu-Metal
  3. Well, I happen to like glam metal, so I guess that matters, too. Obviously power metal is more 'true', but who cares? In the end it's just about if it's good music or bad music. And I am yet to hear a bad Tobias Sammet album.
  4. And Testament. Even I like Testament. And Testament, too, definitely. Especially the early, more technical, Skolnick-era of Testament albums. As for Tobias Sammet, the Avantasia Metal Operas were both awesome. I kind of enjoy the Scarecrow too, but in a different way. I guess it's the same with the early, power metal Edguy as opposed to the more fun, glam approach they had with Rocket Ride. It's all good to me though. If there's going to be a heavy metal narration, I think I know 70's (proto-)metal quite well and I'd love to be of assistance. In my opinion, a lot of the subgenres that later evolved were actually innovated in the 70's. The later bands were just more polished, amplified versions of what already existed. Like how Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Nazareth, Rainbow, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, KISS or Black Sabbath weren't actually THAT far apart stylistically, but the followers of each band took some specific qualities and created whole subgenres based on them.
  5. I agree. Folk is not that similar most of the time. Blind Guardian does do folky ballads though. Power metal crosses over more with thrash metal in my opinion, both are just different types of speed metal. If you like some of the more aggressive power metal (Angel Dust, Iced Earth, Valley's Eve), some thrash is definitely worth checking out. At least Belladonna-era Anthrax and maybe some Annihilator and why not Megadeth even.
  6. Sonata Arctica's early albums are awesome. Couple of sample songs: from their 4th album "Reckoning Night" from their second album "Silence" Their latest album ("Unia", 2007) is good aswell. It has some progressive metal styles in it but I liked it Yes, I'd say Ecliptica was their best. Silence is good, too. Those two are essential albums. Also, another melodic band I really like is Axxis, but I'm sure it's an acquired taste. Very cheesy, almost like glam, but I love it. Favourite album is "Back to the Kingdom".
  7. Ten awesome albums you should definitely check out: Blind Guardian - Imaginations from the Other Side (epic speed metal - my favourite album of all time) Angel Dust - Enlighten the Darkness (aggressive power metal - the best metal CD of the 21st century) Savatage - Wake of Magellan (a rock opera - the best album by the best band ever) Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider (a more thrashy power metal band) Stratovarius - Visions (a melodic metal masterpiece) Nightwish - Wishmaster (fast power metal, if you prefer the heavier more epic approach, check out "Once") Pink Cream 69 - Sonic Dynamite (unbelievable infectious song writing - Scorpions on steroids!) Valley's Eve - Deception of Pain (heavy, fast, powerful, aggressive, catchy) Gamma Ray - Land of the Free (possibly the greatest pure power metal album ever recorded) Helloween - Walls of Jericho (thrashy power metal - alternatively check out either of the first two Keepers of the 7 Keys albums to see where the European power metal scene originated from)
  8. I love that Dio-era Rainbow. Three masterpiece albums those were. But the later stuff after Dio left was just run-of-the-mill arena rock.
  9. Ask him what's his favourite Dio album. And not Dio-Sabbath or Dio-Rainbow, I mean Dio.
  10. The Crimson Idol is a classic. Not among the best albums recorded, but just a fun heavy metal disc. I've seen WASP live and they certainly pull no punches. It's the same shock rock approach you would expect from listening to the lyrics.

Didn't think I'd make a long list like that. Anyway, Impellitteri and Chris Caffery are soon to be included as they have albums coming out this month, and I have two from both already. I already ordered the Caffery one.
  12. Queen was hardly critically acclaimed. Especially not during their time. I guess they were considered somewhat less serious than the other big bands of the time, if not completely laughable. Something like the Darkness.
  13. Children of Bodom's Follow the Reaper (2000) was excellent. Hatebreeder (1999) was fun, too. Since then they haven't really done anything of interest.
  14. Led Zeppelin by far is my number one. The rest I don't even like that much. I have one Bruce Springsteen album, I'd pick him next, followed by maybe U2: I really like three of their albums (Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby and Pop) and actually have two of them on CD. After that... mhh... Jimi Hendrix, Prince. Then the rest. Nirvana last.
  15. I guess Bullet For My Valentine and Trivium. And Strapping Young Lad are Canadian... and I sort of don't think they ever were in any musical movement.
  16. How much to get him to do my laundry? The dishes are also undone...
  17. Run of the mill Brit-pop.
  18. I remember pretty much everyone who recorded with my favourite bands. Obviously I had trouble remembering everyone who played with Saxon at some point, but yeah, usually I know all the band members by name and appearance. I read a lot of autobiographies, band info and such. I guess when I'm not too familiar with a band, like I own only two or three of their albums, some band members' names may slip my mind (especially those who are either not regular members or don't front the band or don't do many interviews or don't take part in writing the songs). Also if I only like a certain 'era' of a bands' production, I may not be familiar with the lineups of their other albums. I don't think it's that much about playing any specific instrument.
  19. I'll call your Bohnke and raise you a Dirk Assmuth of Angel Dust.
  20. 7 - good, fun music. Long career. Album: Rock'n'Roll Over. Underrated album. This one was a fun disc. To me, several hits on an album don't make it good. As for singles, I went with Rock'n'Roll All Nite.
  21. I just wanted to point out he was requesting recommendations for actual band documentaries. Obviously This Is Spinal Tap is a riot and everyone should watch it anyway.
