  1. The main problem with the business model is having a retail outlet in a physical location. This limits your customer base to the locals, and rent costs would far outweigh the profits you would make on games that aren't worth much on eBay and probably wouldn't fetch all that much in a shop either.

It's an idea that would be really cool to do, but if it were profitable it would have been done to the point of saturation. The fact that it isn't a competitive market suggests that there is no demand.

Although to be honest, if ever there was a time to do a gaming shop, this is it. Games are becoming more and more popular, with adults growing up in the digital age, and kids always being interested in games. I read somewhere a while back that games are closing the gap on videos/dvds as sources of entertainment. That's a pie that I'd like a slice of.

  2. The problem with selling old stock for 5p, is that it would impact sales of other items in the store.

Some people buy games like GTAIV on release day regardless of any other factors, but I can't imagine the majority of consumers browsing the store (maybe looking for gifts for young relatives) deciding to buy Burnout: Paradise for £49.99 when there is a different driving game on sale for £0.05

I do like the idea of donating them to charity shops. Although that requires time and effort that a retail chain often doesn't have the patience for.

  3. Best game purchase I ever managed was Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus for the PS1.

It was £19.99 in GAME (Electronics Boutique at the time), and they had a price-match scheme going on.

Currys were selling it for £9.99, and they agreed to match the price.

I then gave them a "£10 Off Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus" promotional voucher that they had sent me through the post.

I left with the game and a penny (change).

  4. What are the most fun games to play online, with multiple consoles in the room (LAN party style) ?

I've got Halo3 (Shooting) and PGR3 (Driving) lined up, can anyone suggest games from other genres with exceptionally good XBOX Live multiplayer OR system link modes?

  5. I watched it recently. I never realised before how tedious the whole "Consonant... Vowel... Another one... Another one... Consonant... Another one" stuff is. I wish they would just get on with it like the numbers, or automate it. After the sixth time of Billy-No-Charisma taking his sweet time deciding what should comes next, it gets annoying.

As for the dictionary corner, when I was watching it had June Ackland from The Bill. She told a shaggy-dog story about the snails in her garden.

I don't quite know how the dictionary corner works, though. How does a dictionary help them re-arrange random letters into a lengthy word? Even if they spot a long word in the letters that needs checking in the dictionary, they wouldn't have time to look it up. What they really need is a computer to do it for them, and work out the best scoring words.

  6. Martin Jol sacked:

    Jol sacked as Tottenham manager

    Martin Jol

Spurs are third from bottom in the Premier League

Martin Jol has been sacked as manager of Spurs after three years in the job.

Reports swept around White Hart Lane as Jol presided over Tottenham's 2-1 Uefa Cup defeat by Getafe, but the club only confirmed the news after the match.

"I shall never forget the Spurs fans," Jol said in a statement. Assistant Chris Hughton was also dismissed.

Clive Allen and Alex Inglethorpe take charge for Sunday's game with Blackburn while Sevilla coach Juande Ramos is favourite to take over.

Report: BBC football correspondent Jonathan Legard

Former Spurs player Allen is the club's development coach, while Inglethorpe is youth team manager.

"For me, Martin and Chris's departure is regrettable," said chairman Daniel Levy.

"Our greatest wish was to see results turn in our favour and for there to be no need for change."

It was claimed Spurs met Ramos in August with a "dizzying" offer to replace the 51-year-old Jol at White Hart Lane.

BBC Sport football correspondent Jonathan Legard said Jol's eventual departure was unavoidable from that moment on.

"It was inevitable ever since Spurs' representatives were caught red-handed in Seville talking to Juande Ramos," said Legard.

"For all the denials from Spurs that nothing untoward was going on, and that it was a meeting about a matter completely unrelated, clearly Jol was a dead man walking and has been ever since."

Ramos is regarded as one of the most promising coaches in European football after guiding Sevilla to back-to-back Uefa Cup titles.

Sevilla beat Spurs on the way to their success in last season's Uefa Cup, while Ramos also led his side to third in La Liga and victory in the Copa del Rey - Spain's top domestic cup competition.

But with Sevilla in the Champions League Ramos opted to see out his contract with the Spanish club which expires next summer.

However Sevilla director of football Ramon Monchi was pictured in the stands as Spurs lost to Getafe and it is thought he was at White Hart Lane to negotiate Ramos's switch to Tottenham.

Gus Poyet has been linked with the assistant manager position under Ramos, but the former Tottenham and Chelsea midfield player has told BBC Sport he has had no contact with Spurs.

During the defeat to Getafe Spurs fans gave vocal support to the Dutchman, singing "Stand up for Martin Jol".

Jol took charge of Spurs in November 2004, replacing the unpopular Frenchman Jacques Santini, and under him the club twice qualified for the Uefa Cup.

Having recruited the likes of Darren Bent, who cost £16.5m, Gareth Bale and French defender Younes Kaboul during the summer, Tottenham had high hopes of challenging for a Champions League place.

But Spurs suffered a disastrous start, recording just one victory - the 4-0 win over Derby in August - in 10 league games and since the reported meeting with Ramos, Jol has faced constant questioning over his future.

Jol's agent is currently in Brazil and was unavailable for comment late on Thursday as regards the terms of the Dutchman's severance package.

"Given what he did last season I don't think he will have a problem finding a new job," said Getafe boss Michael Laudrup after his side's win.

Jol has been linked with Dutch club Ajax who are without a permanent coach following Henk Ten Cate's departure to Chelsea.

  7. Dragsy,

I agree with you, but I think it is because so many people are familiar with the FPS genre, whether it's Halo, Half Life, Unreal Tournament, etc... that a lot of the lower ranked players are only lower ranked because they have just bought Halo and are yet to work their way up the rankings yet. I get just as frustrated at never being the winner, I'm often never anywhere close to the top of the scoreboard. I find the best way to solve this is to have a private game with friends.

I must say though, playing with the better players and such does allow you to improve. When I first started I was hopeless, I have definitely improved through practise. Slowly but surely.

  8. I had completed four levels of the campaign of my own, then did the fifth level with a friend over XBL. I got the achievement for completing the level, then my friend had to go. We exited the game and I resumed my single player campaign. I thought I would start after the fifth level, on the sixth level.

But it loads me up at the beginning of the fifth level again, which I just beat. Do I really have to go through it again? or can I just carry on with a friend tomorrow and get the achievement for completing the game at the end of the last level? Cos given the choice between redoing level five and completing the rest of the game on my own, or continuing from where I left off with a friend... I'd much rather continue with a friend. It's much more fun that way.

  9. Tried the FIFA 08 demo, didn't like it. I'm getting PES2008 instead. I don't think there has been enough of a change in the gameplay since 07 to warrant a purchase, and the cosmetic alterations that have been made I don't like (is it just me or has all the text shrunk?).

  10. From what I've heard, Generals wasn't all that great.

I still prefer RA1 over RA2, as well.

C&C3 is a very good game, although it did take some warming up to. RA1 was a lot simpler and easier to navigate. Though that may be in part due to the controls on a console seeming alien to me, which wouldn't be a problem with a PC.
