IT'S OFFICIAL - REDS ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD

Mark Platt 07 November 2005

Liverpudlians have sung about it for years but now it's official - Liverpool Football Club is the best in the world and we have the stats to prove it!

Following the publication of the latest World Club Rankings by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics the Reds are today sitting proud as the top team in world football.

Based on domestic and continental results over the past 12 months, the reigning Champions of Europe are listed as the number one club side on the planet and who are we to argue?

"The World Club Ranking is a precise classification showing the real level of the clubs free of any subjective influence," reads a statement on the IFFHS website. "It is the result of a profound analysis that allows us to fairly report the level of international performance for each country."

The formula used to determine these rankings is a complicated one and is explained in more detail on the said website, which can be accessed by clicking here.

But for now, sit back and bask in the glory of being able to look down on every other team in the world...

Liverpool are reportedly consider rivalling Internazionale in a January bid to sign Marco Di Vaio.

The Italian striker is unsettled at Valencia and the Mestalla outfit are thought to be prepared to farm him out on loan in the New Year when the transfer window reopens.

Any loan move would be with a view to a permanent deal and Inter have long been admirers of the former Juventus attacker.

Indeed, the 29-year-old has admitted he would like to play for the Neroazzurri after almost moving there in 2002.

Sources in Italy claim that Rafa Benitez has put Di Vaio on his own Christmas shopping list as he ponders freshening up his striking options with Peter Crouch, Fernando Morientes and Djibril Cisse still not firing on all cylinders.

Valencia are ready to listen to the offers that come in and it seems unlikely that the player will remain in La Liga.

I couldn't be bothered doing that whole post-dissection thing of yours, so I'll keep it simple.

Crouch may not have been brought in to be a consistent goal-scorer, but with Liverpool needing goals, I'd sooner drop him for one than keep someone who currently can't score for shit. Ideally, you need a half decent striker and Crouch is about as far as one as humanly possible at the minute.

But Morientes isn't scoring regularly either (and at the moment we're not in dire need of goals - we've won four of the last five and haven't conceded any). At least Crouch has been creating chances for our midfielders (like Gerrard), Morientes hasn't.

Morientes has his off times that's all. Maybe it's hard for him to settle in. He's proven to be a great striker in the past though, so really I'd rather personally have them play him nearly every game so he can pick up momentum and get back to his old self, in which case it'd be a great boost for Liverpool too if he could. Still early days.
