I'd say from that squad list in terms of the roles they play he's mainly competing with Henderson and Gallagher. Those 3 you've mentioned play further forward from what I've seen.

Elliot plays primarily as one of a three in midfield, he only tends to start on the right wing when all other options are unavailable.

That was a really poor quality game, but England definitely deserved to lose. Chucking the big centre back up top for the last 15 minutes is such a stupid thing to do, I don't think it ever actually works and just encourages the defenders to hoof it long - and our defenders love doing that at the best of times.
