Unique/Quirky Music

I'm looking for some really unusual or unique bands at the moment, stuff that's totally out there. The bandsd I'm into at the moment that I'd consider along the right lines are Payne Killer, An Albatross and The Locust...does anyone know of anything similar?

Auditory Aphasia is a small time band in California that has some piano tunes blended with odd time signatures. A more mellow version of DEP, to me atleast. You can find them on MySpace and PureVolume. They have a website but it's not good if you want to hear their music.

Machinae Supremacy, M.I.A., Neon Blonde, This Cathartic Nail and Zombi are all good too. You can find them all on P2P programs, and maybe in record stores. Except for This Cathartic Nail. Do a google search for their website and you can download an entire album. It's an instrumental album, though. Really moody and whatnot. The lead guitarist (I believe) posts on a Mars Volta board I post at. Good stuff.

Thanks! I've heard good things about Zombi in the past, so I'll definitely check them out. Auditory Aphasia sound great, I'm not overly keen on the vocals, but musically they're pretty wonderful.

And I shall likely hunt down the rest in due time.

Dunno if they are quirky enough for you, but check out Fantomas and Mr Bungle.

 I meant to mention them when I made this topic. Fantomas I'm somewhat unfamiliar with, I've only heard the odd few tracks, but I adore Mr. Bungle. Anything Mike Patton has had a hand in I tend to be rather fond of, to be honest.

Musically, they're not anything special, but the subject matter of songs by the Aquabats is usually good for a chuckle. With the infectious and upbeat music backing, they're hard not to get addicted to.

You fail at life. Aquabats are pretty naff.

I don't know if you can necessarily call these bands "unique", since the power-pop genre isn't exactly new, but The New Pornographers, Sufjan Stevens and The Winks are all really quirky. Actually I'm trying to decide which song is more infectious, the New Pornographers' "The Jessica Numbers" or Sufjan's "Come On! Feel the Illinoise!", both of which come from 2 of the best albums released this year. The Winks released a record last year called "Slippers and Parasol" which wasn't exactly as catchy, but very unique in their own right.

A few things from the punk spectrum you may or may not have heard of.

Geza X - Very weird electronic music, with some of the quirkiest lyrics I've ever heard. He only has one album, "You Goddamned Kids!" but I'd highly suggest it. The band has some interesting members, Geza-X for one helped produced many of the prominent punk bands of the time, and the drummer was Brendan Mullen, the owner of the Masque. The Masque was a hot spot for punk bands in the 70s and 80s, sort of like California's answer to CBGB's, but on a smaller scale.

Black Randy and Metrosquad - My best way of describing him is that he is kind of like the punk's version of Frank Zappa (that's another dude you could check out actually). His stuff ranges from wildly eccentric music, to some funkier sounding tracks.

The Screamers - The band consisted of keyboard, synthesizers, and drums. With vocalist Tomata Du Plenty's charismatic warbling on stage, you can bet that these guys were an interesting listen. As an aside, half of the band was gay which sort of has an ironic story behind it. El Duce (Eldon Hoke) allegedly played drums for them when they were the Tupperwares. The irony in that is El Duce later formed the heavy metal group The Mentors, who were notorious for gay bashing and misogynistic lyrics.

Atom and his Package - I don't know a whole lot about this group, but I do know their music is goofy. It sort of reminded me of a sillier version of the Screamers.

Feederz - Another group who were best described as bit eccentric. A favorite of mine, an a bit more of a traditional punk band as opposed to the other groups (if that's possible for these guys). Frank Discussion, the lead singer, had a habbit for wearing strange items while on stage. Those include a suit that had a bunch of insects attached, and also once playing with a dead cat tied around his neck. Heavily political band.

I'm sure I could think of a few more, but those are my best suggestions for now. Feel free to pm me if you have any problem finding these groups, I have all of this stuff readily available if you're interested in hearing it.

"Brains".

Also, you could check out MC Frontalot & Kompressor. Frontalot's a 'nerdcore hiphop' emcee, and Kompressor's an industrial/techno guy from Germany, living in Ohio.
