Long Songs

I don't mean songs like Jesus of Suburbia that are actually 5 different entities of songs, I mean actual long songs, like "November Rain" by G'N'R.

I personally find most of them to drag, just seemingly taking the same thing over and over to gain longevity, yet one of my very favourite songs is near ten minutes long and it doesn't make that much of a significant theme sound wide, but it's the lyrics that entice me.

The song is "Konstantine" by Something Corporate, I interpret it differently every time I hear it and it's a brilliant piece of writing and a nice little tune if you just want something to listen to, as well as analyse.

So yeah, what is everyones opinions on long songs? And do you love "Konstantine"? :shifty:

It depends on the song. If it's just repeating the same thing over and over again, or if it's 20 minutes of guitar solo, chances are I'll get bored of it. If it's well-structured and necessary for the song to be that length, then I'll probably enjoy it.

Teenage Riot by Sonic Youth is 7 minutes long, and while not exactly an "epic", it's a good example of a long song that works well.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd is about 15 minutes long, and absolutely sublime. One of the best post-Syd Barrett Floyd songs there is.

I boast the original love of the masterpiece, Konstantine.

I noticed it in someones sig and tried to find a CD it was on, unfortunately at the time it was a 'live only' song so I had to fumble around to find a bootleg of it.

There's two recorded version of it, I believe. I prefer the later one, the 2001 version or what not.

"Konstantine"

[NOTE: This is original lyrics from "Ready... Break" CD. There is also another version of this song - Konstantine 2001 (Welcome To The Family Version), it's under 'Other songs' at SoCo's page and lyrics are a bit different]

I can't imagine all the people that you know

And the places that you go

When the lights are turned down low

And I don't understand

All the things you've seen

But I'm slipping in between

You and your big... dreams

it's always you and my big dreams

And you tell me

That it's over

But i can't stand here in a patch of four leaf clover

And your restless

And I'm naked

You've got to get out

You can't stand to see me shaking

no, could you let me go

and you don't want to be here in the future

So you say

the present's just a pleasant

Interruption to the past

And you don't want to look much closer

'Cause you're afraid to find out all the hope

That you had sent into the sky by now had... crashed

and it did because of me

And then you bring me home

Afraid to find out that you're alone, no

And I'm sleeping in your living room

But we don't have much room

To live

And I had dreams that i would learn to play guitar

Maybe cross the country

Become a rockstar

And there was hope in me

That I could take you there

But dammit you're so young

But I don't think I care

and if I hurt you then i'm sorry

It's just this guilt has got the best of me

And then you bring me home

'Cause we both know what its like to be alone, no

And I'm dreaming in your living room

But we don't have much room

To live

Konstantine came walking down the stairs

Doesn't she look good

Standing in her underwear?

And i've been thinking, and i've thinking, no

But she's been drinking

And it doesn't get me anywhere

My Konstantine came walking down the stairs

And all that I could do

Was touch her long blond hair

And I was thinking, what I was thinking ya know

we've been drinking and it doesn't get me anywhere

This is because I can spell konfusion with a K

It's hard to like it

It's to dying in anothers arms

and why i had to try it

It's to jimmy eat world

and those nights in my car

But this time i'm alone, and i don't see those stars

I'm not your star?

Isn't that what you said

what you thought this song meant

you thought this song meant

And if this is what it takes

just to lie in my mistakes

and live with what I did to you

And all the things i put you through

I always catch the clock it's 11:11

And now you want to talk

it's not hard to dream

You'll always be my Konstantine

They'll never hurt you like I do

No, They'll never hurt you like I do

No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No

This is to a girl who got into my head

with all these pretty things she did

Hey Baby, You know that you keep me up in bed

It's to a girl who got into my head

with all the fucked up things I did

Hey maybe baby, you could keep me up in bed

My Konstantine

Spin around me like a dream

We played out on this movie screen

And I said,

Did you know I miss you

Did you know I miss you

Did you know I miss you

Did you know I miss you

Did you know I miss you

Did you know I miss you

Did you know I miss you

God, I miss you

And then you bring me home

And we'll go to sleep but this time not alone, no no,

And you'll kiss me in your living room, oh

And you see, no, that i've been missing in my Living room

Cause this is what i miss, what i miss

We don't have much room

I said, does anybody need that room?

Because we all need a little more room

To live

My Konstantine

There's two recorded version of it, I believe. One of them is the live version, and the other has some different lyrics. Go to plyrics.com to figure out which one it is.

I have them both now anyway, that was just when I first heard it. The recorded one was a asia only release as far as I know.

I don't mind long songs, some are very good in fact. I can't really stand short songs (a la System of a Down, Linkin Park, etc.).

One of my favourite songs is off the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack, 'Dancing Mad' and it's 12 minutes long. It has a base core melody but it changes into varying styles throughoutl. Plus it has one of the most badass guitar solos near the end. I prefer the version done by The Black Mages.

I dig long songs, however they've got to be interesting. "Konstantine" is a good song but I much prefer the Jack's mannequin stuff to anything McMahon has done with Something Corporate. I agree "Konstantine" is 'their' masterpiece. It's still no "Transcatlanticism" however. :shifty:

I'm a big fan of long songs, when I'm in the mood to just sit back, chill, and whatever. Anything over 7 minutes I consider "long". That being said, my favorites are probably...

Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden (something like 13 minutes)

Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd (9:07)

Orion by Metallica (8:27)

Cemetary Gates by Pantera (7:02)

Sometimes long songs bore me and sometimes they don't. It depends on the band and content of the song.

Coheed and Cambria - 2113 (9:46) is the best long song though.

I like minimalism so of course I like long songs. Long songs I don't like are like any song I don't like: length never bothers me, just how it sounds. Some examples of awesome long songs:

Vasemman raajan halvaus - Manalan kellari (16:27)

Philip Glass - The Grid (21:23)

any of Plastikman's psytechno tracks

Shpongle - The Sixth Revalation (12:17)

Tangerine Dream - Phaedra (17:39)

Does A Change of Seasons (20+ Mins) count as one big song, or a bunch of little songs?

But yeah, it depends on the song. If it just repeats the same riff again and again, I get bored. But if they mix it up like say, Dream Theater, then I've got no problems with it.

I'm a Mars Volta fan, of course I like long songs. :P

Ditto that.

Some of my favourite 'long' songs:

Amplifier - Continuum (8:51)

Brand New - Good to know that if I ever need attention all I need to do is die (7:00)

Nine Inch Nails - We're In This Together Now (7:04)

Reuben - Return of the Jedi (7:22)

Sigur Rós - Glósóli (6:16)

Chemical Brothers - Surface To Air (7:23)

Mars Volta - Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus (13:01)
