Fallout 3

We're only just talking about it now? >_>

I didn't think the trailer was that great. It only served one purpose, which was to say 'don't worry, this game will be like the other Fallout games and not some crazy ripoff thing that you'll hate'. Otherwise, fairly minimal.

And yes, me and SDM have dissected the issue on MSN already. :shifty:

They look to be going in the right direction with this, maintaining the same feelings from the earlier games while improving everything else.

As long as I get still have a character who is a porn star that is addicted to Jet, I'll be happy.

I'm sure Sean will be looking forward to it :P

I'm dreading the day it gets released, since it looks basically just like Oblivion, which is massively overrated and quite crap.

Don't say that :(

The bit about Fallout 3 being like Oblivion, that is. Not the bit about Oblivion being overrated, that's dead on the money.

I've read the PCGamer article. It's nothing revolutionary, all the coverage so far says "Don't worry, it's nothing like Oblivion", but it's built on the same engine, will have minigames like Oblivion, real time combat like Oblivion, all the same modellers texturers mappers writers and developers as Oblivion, but don't worry, it will be nothing like Oblivion.

There's nothing wrong with real time combat... for example, I play Hitman which is real time, I've played Counter Strike, Killzone, Fall of Man, Call of Duty, you name it... I am fine with real time combat, but when you have a game that is directly designed to simulate turn based table top gaming, and not only do you make it real time, but you also model it after perhaps the single worst combat engine ever designed, you might as well just not even bothering releasing it.

I thought you said it sarcastically. I know a lot of people who cannot play turn based games. Me, I can play both, and I like certain things in certain games... I prefer real time to turn based strategy, for example, although I can play both. But really, my biggest point of contention is that Fallout 3, which is a sequel to Fallout 1 and 2, has abandoned almost all of the gameplay pillars upon which Fallout was built, and has a lot of influences from Oblivion. I have nothing against them making a sequel to Fallout, or them making a sequel to Oblivion, my big problem is making a sequel to Oblivion and calling it a sequel to Fallout.

Since the game seems to be moving to a first person perspective the Real Time combat is going to be necessary, and besides 90% of the time in Fallout you have to fall back on Firearms so it'll be a good bit more action packed to get to do it yourself, instead of cursing your lack of talents in Gatling Lasers ¬_¬

Hopefully the area is based around the first two games and not Fallout Tactics, I'd love to stroll around Junktown, The Hub and New Reno.

I'm really looking forward to this anyway, got the trailer and picture pack off of Xbox Live and I played all the previous games and liked them all (the bastard spawn that came to the consoles doesn't count as far as I'm concerned).

There are tons of first person, turn based games. Did you never own a Nintendo? All the old roleplaying games used to be first person and turn based. Besides, even though the game is being developed in first person, they've supposedly put a lot of work into third person. A lot of the screenshots of the game feature the over the shoulder camera, ala RE Four or Crackdown, but the game also can simulate the exact same camera angle from the old games. How the movement of the camera, locking, and general functions works hasn't been revealed, but I definitely will be playing combat from the third person perspective if indeed it's as good as has been promised.

It's set in Washington, D.C. http://nma-fallout.com/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=2338 This is one of the changes I'm all for; a new city allows them to work with a brand new canon, instead of retroconing whatever they need. Their treatment of canon is defintiely something that will key in to whether I enjoy the game or not, but if their adherence to canon is as close as their mutant, then I am definitely not going to be happy.

The closest game this looks too is the console spin off.

Other fun facts about Fallout 3;

- The most powerful weapon in the game will be the "Fat Man", a handheld nuclear catapult. Take a second to think about that. This is a game that is about surviving in a radiation laden, broken wasteland, surviving any way you can, and now you're being handed the ability to WALK AROUND LAUNCHING NUCLEAR GRENADES?

- To regain health in the wasteland and prevent dehydration, you can drink from toilets. Obviously these people have never taken a biology class, heard about what happens when you drink stagnant water, or EVER USED A TOILET.

- The weapons and armor degrade like in Oblivion. This made sense in Oblivion, but not so much in Fallout. How many times can you fire an AK-47 before you need to repair it? Firearms, unlike swords which lose their edge when repeatedly striking armor, have no such problem. By all means, have them jam, but resolve that to critical failures rather then having it be a constant process. I also see a lot of problems in this game given the way weapons have went from Morrowind to Oblivion. I wouldn't doubt it if this game was limited to classes of weapons such as GUN, KNIFE, and BOMB, with armor being THICK or THIN.

There are some things I like, but they're definitely overwhelmed by how generally shit the rest of the game design seems.
