I'm trying to get my music collection in shape an dI need to be able to find out what genre a certain song is so I can determine how many genre folders I'll have in my directory.

I usually check wikipedia, choose one genre that represents the band as a whole, and use that.

Genre isn't all that big of a thing to be miffed about when SO MANY PEOPLE CANNOT TAG THEIR MP3S RIGHT.

So many wasted nights, just to have my MP3 player not look like shit.

Ahhhh, a fellow overtly anal tag whore. Nice to meet you. :)

The tags are quite handy.

Seen Live? Album I Own? Emo? Paris Hilton is Brutal Death Metal? :shifty:

I s'pose in a way, genre is of what people make it to be.

What's wrong with 'Emo' as a genre?

Also, Last.fm is TERRIBLE for genre tags, they are so inaccurate.

Because it's the users who make the tags. You're going to get a wide range of tags and a bunch of innacurate ones when thousands of people are tagging the same artist. If you're looking there for an accurate genre then you're a bit silly in the first place. I usually just go with what allmusic.com says, they seem to be pretty accurate.

I have a song from Charles Manson's new record on my MP3 player. Its genre is "Unclassifiable." I laughed at that one for some reason.

Other good ones:

- Rocknrollnrollnroll (Built to Spill)

- INTERNATIONAL(POPS) ("Eyes on Me" by Faye Wong)

- General Unclassifiable (They Might Be Giants)

- HERO ("All of This" by Shaimus)
