Adam Stansfield Passes Away

I felt this was worth it's own topic, I know he was not a household world name in football but he was a very good lower league striker and it's quite shocking.

Exeter striker Stansfield dies

Exeter City have announced that striker Adam Stansfield has died at the age of 31.

Stansfield had been suffering from bowel cancer and missed the Grecians' opening two matches of the season.

And the club confirmed late on Tuesday night that the former Hereford United man had passed away.

A statement on their official website read: "It is with great sadness that Exeter City Football Club have to confirm the news that Adam Stansfield passed away this evening.

"Our thoughts are with his wife, family and friends at this time."

Tiverton-born Stansfield began his professional career at Yeovil, before moving onto Hereford and Exeter. He made 190 league appearances, scoring 75 goals.

I remember him well from our days in the Conference battling Yeovil, where he played up front very successfully. 31 is far too young an age to die, and you just assume when you hear that these players are diagnosed that as super-fit athletes they'll come through it like Neil Harris, John Hartson and others have in the past. Very sad.

Rest in Peace Adam Stansfield.

That was a really sad bit of news to wake up to. I didn't even realise he was ill. Considering I don't follow lower league football as much as the Premiership, I know him primarily due to Soccer AM, with the comments regarding to his 'sister' Lisa. However, the fact that he was mentioned often enough to have his own thing on the show and for that to be of note showed that he was a tasty little striker for that level. Anyways, 31 is too young no matter what.

RIP

Read about this and was saddened to hear it. Thought a bigger deal would have been made of it in the media then there was.

Hope Exeter can stay up this season for his own sake, my second League One team for the year. Hope they do it for Adam's sake.

The Stansfield/Alford partnership completely tore Stevenage apart in our first cup final, worked brilliantly off eachother. He was a class act in the lower leagues and always popular with opposing clubs fans too. Of course, not important enough to gain more than a passing mention on things like Sky Sports News :(
