The White Stripes Call it Quits

The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.

The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.

It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.

Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of The White Stripes' intense and incredible career.

Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their Vault subscription record club, as well as through regular channels.

Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn't met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who've shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly.

With that in mind the band have this to say:

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvment will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."

Sincerely,

Meg and Jack White

The White Stripes

From their label's website. Colour me unsurprised, but a bit sad.

Seen them life twice. It was a nice ride, but to be honest, Jack moved on to stuff that fits the time better with his new Bands.

I also how they follow

I´ed also like a comment of the record companys lawjer on this line.

The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want.

It would be awsome if they made all their songs public domain, but i just don´t see it happening.

Does this mean I could release a record under the name 'The White Stripes' and not be sued?

Damn. They certainly were great though, and after 13 years and a few side-projects I guess it really isn't all that surprising that they've split. Even after they've finished, the Stripes still have a massive fanbase, so I wouldn't be too surprised if they do come back at some point in the future.

I tried to like the White Stripes, but outside of their cover of "I Just Don't Know..." and "My Doorbell" I never really enjoyed them very much.

Maybe I'm a bit happy cause he's got more time for the Dead Weather cause their second album was pretty good. I dunno.

Or maybe that Rome thing. It sounds interesting. I dunno.

Or maybe I'm happiest of all that I will not have to see/hear Meg White for the foreseeable future.

See, I've tried listening to The Dead Weather and they've done barely anything for me. The Raconteurs is my preferred non-White Stripes Jack White band.

I can't argue with the fact that no more songs where Meg White is singing will be nice. It only worked on one track ("In The Cold Cold Night") and then it just became painful.
