  1. I definitely think Matt Damon is getting nominated and I think Fassbender should for Steve Jobs, but it bombing could hurt him. Kate Winslett should get a Supporting Actress nomination as well. Also, Emily Blunt should get one for Sicario, which I think was criminally overlooked.

I dunno, plenty of great coordinators turn out not to be suited for head coaching jobs.

So much of being a "good coach" is dependent on talent. In college, a system can make up for lack of talent, that doesn't happen really in the NFL. Bill Belichck and Pete Carroll both were failed NFL head coaches until their current jobs.

  3. 32 is a perfect number. It makes scheduling and everything easy and non-confusing.

When it comes to the Rams leaving St. Louis, St. Louis will now be the city the NFL uses as bait when it wants to hold a city hostage and get public financing for a new stadium.

This is a great write-up on how NFL teams stick it to taxpayers when it comes to stadiums, how the Bengals bent over Hamilton County, Ohio, to fund a stadium that is still somehow named after the billionaire's father that owns the team. I'm sure @zero could expand on it.

The remaining vacancies are the Bucs, Titans, Eagles and 49ers, though Bucs' offensive coordinator Dirk Cutter is considered the favorite in Tampa and is the reason why they fired Lovie Smith

  4. The Bengals weren't simply in "take three knees and try the FG" mode, not only because of the Steelers having their timeouts but also because of the weather. It was pooring all night, the balls were slick, a FG is not guaranteed, especially considering Nugent was 23rd in FG percentage and about 70 percent from 40-49 yards.

Thanks to the final minute, everyone will forget about the awful play call on the Bengals' 2-point conversion attempt. If they make that, at worst they go into overtime

I did mark out super hard when Han and Chewie showed up, and even when C3P0 and Leia showed up. The ages of 12-14 were big Star Wars years for me, so when I saw things like the Millenium Falcon or Han and Chewie's "we're home" scene, I choked up. I was on the verge of tears when Leia first showed up.

You couldn't release this movie without the old characters, not the first one in a new saga. Not to mention, of the old guys, Han & Chewie were the only ones with significant screen time.

    Hoyer is awful.

I remember last season there was an Adam Scheffer article calling Michigan State the next Quarterback U. based on Hoyer, Cousins, Drew Stanton and Nick Foles (who was at MSU one season and played in one game before transferring to Arizona). So, I guess not on all that.

Color me unimpressed with Gase. He was the Denver offensive coordinator when Peyton was still playing like Peyton. His offense in Chicago this year was alright, when you consider the injuries, but I just don't see the big hub-bub about him. I imagine the intent with this hire was to bring in someone that could potentially save Tannehill from crashing and burning.

Somebody always has to be the hot assistant coach. For years it was whoever a coordinator for the Pats, or somebody like Rod Marinelli. You have to find a head coach from somewhere.

There doesn't seem to be any buzz about college coaches, so that's why the same five assistants are going to interview for every job. Apparently, the Bucs fired Lovie Smith because the Dolphins wanted to interview Dirk Cutter (their OC)

Since the busts don't have hats, it's a moot point, but TO would be a 49er, I think that's obvious.

Great addition, all busts have side profile shots like mugshots so they can have a helmet logo

My girlfriend is in the camp of people who can't stand C3PO. A comic relief character getting a ton of focus, especially in A New Hope, is something that should turn people off to the entire franchise. And in defense of Jar Jar the fact that everyone appeared okay with C3PO probably played a huge role in Lucas thinking he could just go back to that well. And as someone who rewatched the originals before TFA I did find around 30-40 minutes into A New Hope myself wanting them to get on with things. And so much of that time is devoted to the droids. I think the fact that back in 1977 stories weren't told that way in the west is what gives C3PO more of a "free pass". Nearly 40 years on and everyone and their mother has done TV shows or movies where comic relief characters are integral to the storyline progression. By the time the prequels came out entertainment had gone in a complete opposite direction essentially avoiding any and all comic relief.

Going back to the cantina scene, it's genuinely the most brilliant part of the entire series. There's an entire world there, characters with vast histories that only briefly get touched on. Nothing is as "Star Wars" as establishing in spite of this massive battle between good and evil with the lives of the entire galaxy in the balance, most of the people in the galaxy don't really give a shit. Han Solo's entire character is based around that! The prequels completely missed that, making the galaxy incredibly small and intertwined. Everyone knows everyone. Boba Fett, C3PO, R2D2, they were all there. It made a lot more sense to bring back characters for TFA than it did to insert them into the prequels. The fight was completely different then, but the fight from A New Hope on has been the same.

So the two people who ended up taking down the evil Empire being the secret twin children (who were literally separated at birth and had never met) of the most feared person in the galaxy isn't a small universe? George Lucas made a point that makes sense...from the beginning the saga was always a soap opera in space. In soap operas, everyone always knows everyone. Everything is always interconnected. You may not like it, but he followed that storytelling structure.

Do yourself a favour and don't look into the wikipedia article for wrongful convictions in American history. I spent a good amount of time on that tonight and just.. nope.

I just read that the Innocence Project has freed 392 wrongfully convicted people. It is scary to think of the amount of people that have died in prison for stuff they didn't do.

To be fair, none of those guys played under the modern passing game rules, where far fewer interceptions are thrown. 1:1 now isn't the same as it was then.

This. Up until the early 2000s, you could basically assault receivers in the field of play. There have been eight 5,000-yard-plus passing seasons in NFL history, seven have been since 2008. There have 137 4,000-yard seasons in NFL history, with all but 17 since 1990. It was a different game, even 20 years ago. Brett Favre's TD/INT ratio is 1.5/1. Say what you will about Mark Sanchez, but he won four playoff games on the road in his first two seasons.

  11. There is a part of me that thinks that Avery may have killed Halbach, but there is no way the state proved guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The investigation was more incompetent than the OJ investigation.

But the Brendan Dassey conviction may be the most troubling case of a somebody spending time in prison for a crime they did not commit in American history. How anyone can look at the actions of his second court-appointed attporney and contend that that is not ineffective assistance of counsel is astounding. My hear breaks for that kid.

  12. The basis for the "Machete Order" is that the reveal of Darth Vader as Luke Skywalker's father is still the big surprise of the saga and thus nothing should be known about Vader being Anakin Skywalker, but that is toothpaste that is not getting back in the tube.

  13. Everybody hating everything about the prequels is just one of those things that has just permeated pop culture that people can't watch them without that distorting their perceptions about them.

Episode II is really the worst of everything, but TPM (tax policy aside) is a good (not great) movie and Liam Neesons is awesome in it.

I'd agree with that. To me, Stafford is a good to very good QB that, like you said, isn't the kind to be able to carry a team by himself. I think the O-line still needs improving (though probably not as much as our early form may have suggested). Throw in a DT and DBs (and throw in the easier schedule next year) and we could easily be a 10+ win team again.

NFL schedules for the most part are pre-determined and only two games are based off your previous record. Every team plays:

    • Each team in their own division twice
    • One entire division from within their own conference on a rotating basis (every 3 years)
    • One entire division from the opposite conference on a rotating basis (every 4 years)
    • One team from the other two divisions in your own conference that finished in the same place (1st place vs 1st place and so on)

The Lions are due for the NFC East and AFC South next year, plus either the Rams/49ers from the NFC West and the Bucs/Saints from the NFC South
