I highly doubt that UEFA will increase the number of English teams in the CL. They didn't do it when Real Madrid finished fifth and won it in 2000, and they won't do it now. BTW, that season the Spanish FA gave the spot to Madrid ahead of the fourth placed team, and the team in fourth that season got relegated two seasons later. Make of that what you want, but chances are none of this will matter anyway.

The way I look at the situation is that Liverpool should have to qualify to defend it. Brazil have to qualify for the world cup and Greece have to qualify for the Euro Champs, so it should be no different for Liverpool. It would suck big time for them, but those are the breaks.

But they're entirely different competitions. How Brazil perform in one World Cup doesn't have a direct effect on how they perform in qualifying for the next. Liverpool getting to the final of the CL has had an effect on our form in the Premiership. I strongly believe that if we hadn't have qualified for Europe, we would've finished much higher than Everton.

I do think Liverpool deserve the chance to defend the crown if they win it, yes. But not at the expence of a team who did better in the Premiership than them.

Red-faced FA accused of bias against Liverpool

The FA faced major embarrassment today after it emerged that its decision to exclude Liverpool from next year's Champions League unless they finished fourth in the Premiership flies in the face of a ruling they made last year when Chelsea and Arsenal were potentially in a similar predicament.

The FA declared just yesterday that the only way English teams can qualify for the Champions League is by finishing in the top four of the Premiership. It therefore confirmed that if Liverpool beat AC Milan and are crowned European champions later this month, they will not be allowed to defend their title unless they also beat Everton and Bolton to fourth spot in the league.

However, last year, at a time when Chelsea and Arsenal were still challenging in Europe, the FA announced that if either side won the Champions League, they would be permitted to re-enter the competition the following year regardless of where they finished in the Premiership.

A statement on the FA's web site, dated March 10 2004, read: "Should Arsenal or Chelsea win the Champions League, they will automatically qualify for next season's competition, but England will not gain an extra Champions League place, even if they finish outside of the top four in the Premiership. In that scenario, the fourth-placed team in the Premiership will play in next season's Uefa Cup."

The statement was removed this morning. When contacted by Guardian Unlimited, the FA said it is composing an official reaction to today's revelation.

Its the way it should be frankly. Winning the most difficult cup competition in the world should grant qualification next year more than coming fourth in a domestic league. Just remember there was a time when we've only had 2 or 3 champions league spots, better teams than Everton have missed out. We aren't getting 5.

And we've only got four because of the performance of Liverpool, and others, in Europe.

Actually you got four because the English, Spanish and Italian were (and are) regarded as the three top leagues in europe. The reason why you KEEP having 4 teams is due to the performance of Liverpool, and others, in Europe, though.

Fuck off are you. United are. Followed by Arsenal. You're a LONG way behind in third.

I don't know how you guys think you can beat Milan either, considering you needed an Oscar winning performance from Luis Garcia just to get ONE GOAL against Arsenal, who aren't even the best in England, let alone Europe.

It's always nice when all you can do to back up your arguement is laugh.

You won't be laughing when you lose the final and can't enter next season because you suck too much.

But of course, you're different in the Champions League.

The difference being, you won't be there next season.

There'll still be European games in Liverpool though I guess. You could always go and see them in that there Goodison place. I heard it's quite nice :shifty:

We dominated in the second half.
