I Hate Monkeys

I hate monkeys. I hate them I hate them I hate them.

Well I just got second in a $50 sit & go hold em tournament on Empire Poker. This was seriously the best I've ever played online and I knocked 8 players out. So it's down to me and one other player, I have alittle more then 5000 chips to his 2000. I start chipping away at his pile until he's down to about 1000. I get AQ off suited on the BB, he goes all in so I of course call him. He shows 10h,7h. flop comes up 8h,2d,3d. turn is a Ah giving me my pair but the river comes at it's a fucking heart giving him his flush. I swear some and get very pissed off but I'm fine with it since we're back to his 2000 and my 5000. Next hand and I get pocket A's. I put him allin and he calls! he calls with pocket J's. flop comes up 10,A,4. So I have a set of A's, in the bag right? WRONG. Turn, Q, River, K. He rivers a straight. So now now he's chip leader 4000 to my 3000 or something. we play for another 7 or 8 hands and I keep knocking him down to about 1000 chips and he keeps catching his cards and bouncing back. finally we're about even with chips, he has like 30 more then I do. I get AK of diamonds and I'm on the BB. he raises me I raise him back etc and for before you know it I'm all -in before the flop and he calls me. he shows....get ready....Jd3h. That's right....Jd3h.... Flop comes up K, K, J. Giving me once again a set compared to his pair. The turn comes up a 3 but I could care less because I already have my set. Here comes the river...a fucking J......giving him a boat. Let me repeat that he caught a boat on the river and beat my trips. Thus giving me second place.

Well....let me just say this, after I beat my head against the monitor for about 5 minutes I decided to see if my fellow poker players on here have any bad beats such as this.

EDIT: For those who don't know, a Monkey is the term for a player who always plays with shit.

You took a bad beat, and we're all sad for you. I'm still not one for complaining about bad beats though. The way I like to look at it to keep myself under control, as you said, you were a better player than this man. He beat you in the SNG, but you can't be a consistant money maker in anything without a substantial amount of skill. So look at it that way. If you compared profits for a year of playing, and THEN he had you beat, that's when I would complain. And with that, keep in mind that even though he was lucky here, this is the kind of player you win the most money against.

I lost 3 heads up games to monkeys yesterdays. One guy called my Aces with a 5 7 offsuit. Guess who hit the straight on the river? Clue, it wasn't me.

Bastard morons.

It's poker, Pepsi. You made all the right moves, and still lost. It happens. The key is to not let it affect you the next time. Don't be gun-shy, and don't be afraid to keep playing the same way you did, as it's obviously working. You caught a shitload of bad beats, but that game is over. Do your best to rebound next time.

My condolences, though. That's some shitty fucking luck, and I'd feel awful if I lost a tourney like that.

My mate was playing in a sit n go, three players left. Chip leader has about 4000, dude has about 1200, loser has 1100. Chip leader folds so it's down to dude and loser. Loser goes all in, and dude haspocket aces so he calls. Cards show up and loser has 2/7 off suit. Flop comes up A 4 7. Turn card is a 2, River is a 2. Dude freaks it as usual.

Here's a better one, would never happen in a real money situation.

Dealer: Andrene folds

Dealer: Achilles4451 calls 925, and is all in

Dealer: maverick10 calls 1,715, and is all in

Dealer: genyded folds

Dealer: Drudru3456 shows [Ac 8h]

Dealer: Achilles4451 shows [8d 7s]

Dealer: maverick10 shows [2c As]

Dealer: Uncalled bet of 1,095 returned to Drudru3456

I wish I understood Poker better. I mean I could probably get a book or something. What do you actual good players think would help me improve more? Playing the free tables or reading up on how to play?

I think you should read books first since the majority of free online players do not play with any strategy whatsoever and you can get a false impression of your skills based on that. As Pepsi demonstrated someone who makes every incorrect play can win sometimes, but I can almost guarantee that the person who beat her would play differently if their own money had been on the line all of those times he/she made stupid bets.

In online tourneys race situations happen much more frequently than they should because it's in your best bet to get a big stack ASAP. If you're playing with your own money you may not be willing to bet $20-50 on an A3 suited, but with $2,500 in fake chips and a chance to double or triple up, almost everyone will take that chance. You're better off playing the cheapest tables for real money than trying to learn at free ones IMHO.

personally I think playing at a fake money table online is one of the worst things you can do to learn how to play correctly. Your best bet would be to go to a casino, watch how everything is done as they allow you to watch but not to hover above a player, then sit at the lowest limit table and start playing. That's how I started, by playing $2/$3 Omaha at the casino.

Meh, my worst beat(s) happened a few days ago. It was like a $45 84 person tournament. I'm playing great... I'm at about 3,000 in chips when the average is 1200 or so. I get pocket Kings under the gun, I raise a small amount... I want some action. Then someone goes all in behind me. With Kings, of course I'm going to call. He shows me pocket 5s, giving him approximately two outs. He flops another 5.

My stack was decreased by about half. A few hands later, I'm down to about 900, and I get kings again. Someone raises before me, so I go all in. I get called by K Q diamonds. The guy FLOPS a straight. 9 10 J all in a row. It was unreal, and the worst part is that both guys after they won said "LOL! Too funny!" It's not that funny you lucky piece of shit.

It's my opinion, that you can't learn anything from just reading the books unless you're experiencing and applying the things in the book as you go at a table. However, I definately recommend that you do get a book or two. If you can do so comfortably, it'd be best to start at a low limit real money table if you really want to learn anything.
