The result was great, but the performance wasn't. Defensively United were solid - Neville, Rio and Brown were great, Evra did better - but the midfield really is weak. Giggs didn't really perform until the last half hour or so, not sure why he got man of the match.

If O'Shea's injury is serious, Fergie really will have to ask for more money so he can bring someone in now. Either that or try and loan someone. Hopefully the rumours of two world class midfield signings in the summer are true.

Eye problem ends Scholes' season

Paul Scholes

Scholes has not played since just after Christmas

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an eye problem.

Scholes, 30, has been suffering from double vision in his right eye since sustaining a blow to the head in the match at Birmingham on 28 December.

"Paul Scholes has a medical condition affecting the vision in his right eye," said a club statement.

"It is not a football related injury. A number of specialists have all agreed that he needs three months' rest."

Scholes, who signed a new four-year contract last summer, scored the last of his three goals this season in the 3-0 win over West Brom on Boxing Day.

The news could force manager Sir Alex Ferguson into the transfer market earlier than he intended.

Ferguson had already said he would be looking to find a replacement for Roy Keane in the summer, but the loss of their most senior midfielder will be a big blow to United.

With Alan Smith currently sidelined with an ankle injury, they had to resort to a makeshift partnership of Ryan Giggs and John O'Shea against Liverpool on Sunday.

And even the future of that combination could be in doubt after O'Shea had to come off at half-time with a rib injury required an X-ray.

Giggs, Ronaldo, Fletcher and Richardson isn't that bad a midfield to live with for now. It's not a great midfield and below those 4 Utd have virtually nothing, but at least it's something. Rooney can play a midfield type role, he often has done, behind Nistelrooy. Rossi could always be called up too, who looks pretty promising.

Good performance today. Dunno why everyone hates on Kieran Richardson, his finish against Wolves and the one against Burton were both very good. Maybe not a regular first-teamer, but certainly good enough for cover IMO.

I liked Vidic, both for the pass to Saha for the second goal, and for the yellow card he picked up for blatantly obstructing one of the Wolves players. Rio also looked pretty good in midfield, though I'd need to see him in that role against tougher opposition to judge really.

So I went to Newcastle/Pompey yesterday and, in addition to Shola Ameobi being the worst player I've seen at Premiership level, Scott Parker is fucking amazing. Man Utd missed out last summer big time, what are your thoughts if they were interested this summer?

IMO he's the best midfield player not at Liverpool or Chelsea.

I was at the United/Fulham game. Highly enjoyable. Two old guys sitting behind me had been moaning about Ronaldo the whole game and when he scored his second I heard one of them say

"Ah, look who scored. Ronaldo the arsehole!"

I was sitting behind the goal that United scored their first 3 into. Ronaldo's free kick was a fucking peach.

It certainly seems that Ronaldo felt he had something to prove after a few bad performances and a bit of a backlash for a while. Another two goals for him today so far, that's four in the last two. Seems he's firing back to his best. Look forward to seeing his goals on MOTD tonight, that freekick last week was awesome.

Manchester United have confirmed that Alan Smith has suffered a broken leg, as well as a dislocated ankle, in an injury that Sir Alex Ferguson has described as one of the worst he has seen in football.

The England international came on as a substitute in the 1-0 FA Cup defeat at the hands of Liverpool, but was stretchered off with full time approaching after blocking a free kick from John Arne Riise.

Smith appeared to fall heavily on his left ankle and the incident caused considerable concern amongst the United players as he lay stricken on the ground.

Seven minutes of injury time were added at Anfield, and it has now been confirmed that Smith has gone to hospital after suffering the nasty break.

Red Devils boss Ferguson has gone as far as to suggest that Smith's problem is one of the worst he has seen in over 30 years of management, and the blow ends the former Leeds man's participation in the rest of the season, as well as the World Cup finals.

"He has broken his leg and dislocated the ankle joint," Ferguson told MUTV.

"It is a bad one. He has gone to hospital, it looks very long term - it is one of the worst I have seen. I am sure he will be back."
