I think that " No Luke, I am your father" should have been up there.  Even people who have never seen Starwars know that!

Agreed. Non-Star Wars fans know it, and at the time it was a MASSIVE shock. I'm surprised it's not in there personally.

EDIT: Does this count? :P

Wash: This is gonna get pretty interesting.

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Define "interesting".

Wash: Oh, God, oh, god, we're all gonna die.

I think the list was more about quotes that MEANT something, and not just lines the people liked:

19

I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!

NETWORK

1976

oward Beale: I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad.

Howard Beale: [shouting] You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell,

[shouting]

Howard Beale: 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it:

And also:

Well, the Star Wars one we mentioned means a lot, so that should be in there. The Serenity one was a joke.

I was very surprised the "I am Your Father" quote wasn't included, but the good far outweighs the bad.

Couple I thought would have been in there:

"Are you gonna bark all day little doggy, or are you gonna bite?" Reservoir Dogs

"No I don't hate Balboa, but I pity the fool" Rocky III

"Hold up lads, I've got an idea" The Italian Job

Too many old movies, not enough modern beauties like:

From Snatch:

Guy (forget his name): Should I call you Bullet? Tooth?

Bullet Tooth Tony: You can call me Susan if it makes you happy.

From Chopper:

Chopper: Jimmy, if you keep stabbing me, you're going to kill me.

ApSham was right I think. This list wasn't quotes that people necessarily liked, but instead quotes that have significance beyond the movies they actually occured in that even people who have not seen them know of most of them. That being said I do agree with the missing Star Wars quotes and I also feel that some quotes were over/underrated. #33, 51, 61, and 80 were among my underrated list with #3, 9, 17 were overrated. #3 should have been high but not that high, 9 was way way too high, and well I've never really been a Citizen Kane fan, despite most pegging it as the greatest of all time. My personal favorites are #68(Jack was great in that role), #40(Gump is one of my favorite movies of all time), and #54(Can't go wrong with more Tom Hanks)

While we're at it, the quotes i believe were underrated in this list, and obviously this is just an opinion as anyone else's, were 29,33, 51 and 95. I don't even agree with the pick for #1, but from the top 12, i'm a fan of quotes 2, 6, 10 and 12. As for the Star Wars issue, most people who don't give a crap about Star Wars won't know any quotes from it apart from "may the force be with you" so i agree with the list in what concernes to that.

EDIT: added a couple more personal favourites.

The problem with the AFI is that there's never any English films in the lists. Hence no Italian Job.

On second look at the list I see that the following should be higher:

51

You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?

DIRTY HARRY

1971

61

Say "hello" to my little friend!

SCARFACE

64

DR. STRANGELOVE

1964

68

THE SHINING

1980

79

Striker: Surely you can't be serious.

Rumack: I am serious…and don't call me Shirley.

AIRPLANE!

1980

My own favourite quotes include

"Agghhh he's got an arm off" - Shaun Of The Dead

"Even with my eyes open I can't see a thing" - Zatoichi (translated)

"I'm Jack's Colon" *sniggers* "Yeah I get cancer, I kill Jack" - Fight Club

"I saw a snail crawling along the blade of a straight razor" - Apocalypse Now

"If I say it's safe to surf this beach soldier it's safe to surf this beach!" - Apocalypse Now (basically everything on that beach is quote gold - Napalm In The Morning, Pretty Hairy Out There, Either You Surf Or You Fight etc etc....

"Hold on tightly, let go lightly" - Croupier

They did a thing like this in Entertainment Weekly a while back and had readers send in their favorite quoes and the top three were all from the same movie. They were from The Princess Bride.

Westley: As you wish.

Vizzini: He didn't fall? Inconceivable!

Inigo Montoya: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Inigo Montoya: Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!

They also included the line from Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Pee Wee: I'm a rebel, Dottie, a loner.

And the line from Roddy Piper in They Live

Piper: I came here to chew bubblegum and kick some ass. I'm all out of bubblegum.
