...the word "charity" is the key thing here. A lot of the times for charity games/gigs whatever, the people will be offered money to play in them, but 90% of the time the fee will be turned down or accepted, but given to charity, and they generally don't give one gay 10-times more than everyone else. Apparently, at least half the players kept their fee.
