Sludge Metal - Melvins. Melvins Melvins and more Melvins. It's the be-all and end-all of sludge, really.

As for "groove metal", not really sure what that is, but check out "Midnight Mountain" by Cathedral. You will like.

My only real knowledge of metal comes through thrash, so enjoy.

Toxic Holocaust - A one man band, but fucking awesome, if you only check out one band on this list, make it this, no question.

Bludwulf - Similar mold to Toxic Holocaust, except that they are a full band, but maybe not quite as good, but still bad ass.

Sodom - Not much to say, but they kick ass.

Aggression - Not to be confused with the punk band Aggression, look for Forgotten Skeletons as far as albums go.

Celtic Frost - I don't know much about them other than a demo from 86, but it's worth checking out because it rocks.

Kreator - One of the seminal thrash metal bands from my understanding. Well worth the paper they're printed on.

For Death Metal, I'd suggest Destroyer 666, they're pretty brutal.

As for Sludge, there is a group that is a sort of punk/metal tweener by the name of the Electro Hippies. They're fucking bad ass, and definitely have a very lo fi sludgy sound.
