EWB Top 20

FILMS

Are you tired of seeing The Godfather top the film polls? Never even heard of Citizen Kane? Well now's your chance to play your part in EWB's own Top Films poll.

There are no rules on criteria, base your list on whatever appeals to you personally, if you prefer a balls-to-the-walls revenge flick over a three hour character drama then that's completely your preference. The only rule is it must of been a full length feature, no short films.

POINTS

1st - 20 points

2nd - 15 points

3rd - 12 points

4th - 10th - 8 points

11th - 15th - 6 points

16th - 20th - 5 points

I'll post the result on March 1st.

The trouble for me listing 25 "favourite" films is I'd probably end up thinking of a good one, then putting it in and end up leaving out one I preferred when it comes to the end of it. So, are you looking for us all to list a full 25?

And, I'm tired of The Godfather topping the film polls because I've bought the trilogy from Play.com and I've never actually got round to watching any of them. o_O

I should go find my list from the last time we did this just so I can laugh, because the placements here are probably fairly different from what they were like last time, as my opinions on these sorts of things depends on my state of mind aside from #1, which I'm betting was Eternal Sunshine last time too.

1. Requiem For A Dream - Most depressing movie ever made. Loved it smile.gif

2. Bullet - Not the Steve McQueen version. The Mickey Rourke/Tupac Shakur version. Very underrated movie.

3. Midnight Express - True story about a man put in prison for drug smuggling. Only Requiem was more hardhitting than this.

4. American History X - What a performance from Edward Norton.

5. Full Metal Jacket - Best war movie ever made.

6. Pulp Fiction - The coolest movie ever made.

7. Kill Bill Vol 1 - Action is awesome. I never thought I'd ever enjoy a movie where the action lead is a lady. Tarantino convinced me smile.gif.

8. Once Were Warriors : Jake the Muss.

9. Mad Max 2 : Hard core action.

10. First Blood : The most underrated action movie ever made.

11. When A Stranger Calls (1984 version) : Scariest movie I've ever seen. The movie still gives me the creeps.

12. Rocky 3 : Good old Sly.

13. New Jack City : Wesley Snipes in his prime.

14. Breakdance : I've lost all credibility now....lol. You are a product of your youth and I liked 80s breakdancing as a kid. Worth looking at for a Van Damme cameo...hillarious.

15. Romper Stomper : Go Crowe.

16. Missing in Action 2 : Braddock Vs Yin. Chuck at his best.

17. Death Wish 3: Charles Bronson vs every mugger in New York. Classic.

18. The Karate Kid : Geez, I've played this movie a lot of times in my life.

19. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly : Clint at his prime.

20. Scarface : What is there NOT to like?

1. The Shawshank Redemption: Only gets better through repeat viewings.

2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: An emotionally and visually stunning journey. My favourite Kauffman film.

3. American Beauty: One of those films that totally changed my view of life at the time, and it still catches me everytime.

4. Fight Club: An edgy, enthralling thrill ride. The first R-rated movie I ever saw.

5. La Vita e Bella: Just heart-wrenching. Holocaust movies are always a sensitive subject, but this one attacks it from an entirely different perspective and succeeds on so many levels.

6. No Country for Old Men: A visually stunning cat and mouse, and ignores so many Hollywood conventions that you can't help but feel sobered by the ending.

7. Stranger Than Fiction: It's cute and quirky, sure, but there's something deeper in the flick. A really good 'serious' outing from Ferrell.

8. The Departed: I would probably prefer Infernal Affairs if it was in English, and definitely prefer the IA ending - but The Departed was slick and stylish, and wonderfully cast.

9. Fellowship of the Ring: I know Return gets all of the props and Towers had more action, but I don't think I ever came out of a movie as buzzed as I did after Fellowship. Just visually stunning, wonderfully cast, and epic in every sense of the word.

10. Oldboy: I dread the day when Hollywood gets ballsy enough to bastardise this into a Hollywood film. The content, the style... it's just a wonderfully made movie.

11. The Green Mile: Like Shawshank, this one is just a beautifully told story. Heart-wrenching and amusing and shocking - it's a ride (to use a cliche) that only improves with time.

12. A Love Song for Bobby Long: I'm sure it wasn't everybody's cup of tea, but I liked the humanity of the drama. It's just a few people and their story without a big budget or epic fight scenes, but it works. Plus, you know, there's some Scarlett Johannsen side-boob

13. Sin City: Translated brilliantly from graphic novel to the big screen without losing any of its style. It's gory and dark and sexy in all of the right places.

14. Pulp Fiction: It's probably a cliche to like this movie, but it's just the complete package. The dialogue and soundtrack, like most everything Tarantino touches, is gold - and the cast has a fantastic chemistry.

15. Battle Royale: Maybe I'm biased because I'm a enamored with CSAMH's game of the same name, but there's something of a guilty pleasure to be found in watching school-children murder one another.

16. The Boondock Saints: It's criminal that this movie wasn't a bigger box office success. It's witty, its violent, and it has Billy fucking Connelly in it!

17. Cruel Intentions: It's no Shakespearean epic, but the sheer steamy sensuality of it scores points for me. There's not a lot of flesh on show, sure, but they say that there's a lot to be said for seduction. Gellar is positively sexual in this.

18. Super Troopers: My favourite comedy film of all time for sheer replay value. I could quote this ad nauseum and never tire of it. Nothing spectacular plot wise, but it's good, innocent fun.

19. Casino Royale: I was never much of a Bond fan, good though the films were, until seeing this. Craig takes the role and reinvents it without the cliches and catch-phrases that had begun to wear thin for me under the previous incarnation. With most of the cheese cut out, it made Bond bad-ass again.

20. Collateral: Another great cat and mouse film, and like No Country, it's delivered with style and flair. Cruise is positively intimidating while Foxx turns whiny bitch without flinching. Thoroughly enjoyable.

20. Hero (2002)

Just for my own maths...

+ 5 British movies, 5 American, 4 Japanese, 2 Chinese, 1 French, 1 Korean, 1 Spanish, 1 US/UK partnership.

+ Takeshi Kitano (Zatoichi, Battle Royale), Tony Leung (Infernal Affairs & Hero) and Brad Pitt (Fight Club & Snatch) appear in two movies.

+ Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Ran) directs two of the movies.

+ Seven of the movies were released while I was at university.

+ 2001 was apparantly the best year for movies with Intacto, Gosford Park and Amelie all released. However 1979 had Alien and Apocalypse Now, 2002 had Hero and Infernal Affairs, 2003 had Zatoichi and Oldboy (two mindblowing trips to the cinema on a whim) and 2000 had Snatch and Battle Royale.

+ I own all these movies except The Sting.

+ Three involve samurai, two are love stories, two are science fiction, two are very different sorts of comedy (Battle Royale and Carry On), two are caper movies and one is a period murder mystery....Among others in the list.

+ One is an excellent re-imagining of Shakespeare's King Lear (guess which one).
