After recent rumors that the game had slipped into 2009, Fable 2's release date has been set at October 21, 2008.

From IGN:

August 7, 2008 - Mark your calendars for October 21. That's the day that Lionhead's Fable II will release in the US with a European ship date coming a few days later on October 24. The game will be released around the rest of the world in the months following.

Alongside the Fable II release date, Microsoft has also nailed down the day that the Fable II Pub Games will launch on the Xbox Live Arcade. The game, which will allow players to gamble and amass money to import into Fable II when it releases, is set for August 13. Those who preorder Fable II will be given a code to download the Pub Games for free, or you can buy it separately for 800 Microsoft points.

I cannot wait for this game. When Molyneux was first talking about the co-op feature I was convinced it was going to be a typical cop-out with local play only, but fortunately not. Cannot wait to play this online with folk, co-op is always exciting and this'll be a totally different twist on it.

He's hardly been cumming on ideas that we've never seen before like he did with the first Fable, which was enjoyable even without all the hyped stuff. So, I'm good to go for Fable 2.

I've had my preorder in for this baby for a month or so now. I never paid much attention to the hype of the original so it didn't disappoint me a whole lot. Molyneux seems to be keeping himself on a short leash this time around so I figure at least 85-90% of what he's been saying will end up in the final product.

I never played the first Fable because I didn't get into RPGs until two years ago, but now that I love them, I want Fable 2 bad. As far as the hype concerns, Molyneux's hype has only been directed towards things that he could show in game, so I'm not too worried.

He did better for Fable 2. Everything he hyped up (like the dog, choosing the gender of your player, raising families, etc.) he showed proof of, rather than just listing off things and not delivering on them.

I never really found Fable that great of a game. Solid action fun, yes. Revolutionary staple for Xbox? No. I thought it was ridiculously short as well. One day I actually lay in bed with a girl all day, and watched her play it start to finish. Damn WoW freak, she loved it...and I was bored shitless.

Hopefully Fable 2 improves on what Fable built. It kind of came across to me as a very simple version of Zelda, for Xbox. From the sounds of it though, it should be an improvement. But I'm hoping it'll be more than what I think.

Also, sexy armour. But only with the special edition, obviously.

Basically it's an action RPG with moderate freedom and customization that takes place in a world that reacts to your decisions (ie: legendary good aligned heroes will be swarmed by towns people who cheer and clap while evil ones will have everyone run away and hide him him).
