Completely unsurprising. While I like Bill Simmons, Grantland was a vanity project built around him, and, without it, there was no chance for it to survive, especially when HBO/Simmons started pulling writers away.

The writers were all under contract, but the editors were in an at-will relationship.  And the way Simmons had them handle their departure was done exclusively to hurt ESPN.  He's going to get something off the ground that looks a lot like Grantland and I think ESPN is going to be alarmed at how much of a following it'll have.
