  1. I dunno. Porcello relies heavily on good pitch framing and strong infield defense, neither of which the Mets have.
  2. When the Mets signed Michael Wacha to a 1-year deal yesterday, BVW identified him as "starter depth" which was odd as everyone assumed he was being signed to be the #5 starter. Now today those comments make more sense as they've signed Rick Porcello to a 1-year, $10 million deal. Wacha will presumably be going to the bullpen and be the swing guy who will jump into the rotation when someone gets hurt. Either that or we're about to hear yet another round of Syndergaard trade rumors.
  3. Boras clients have combined to earn almost $900 million so far this offseason.
  4. Blue Jays sign Tanner Roark. 2 years, $24 million.
  5. Houston has been reaching out to virtually every marquee free agent and they've been getting told flat out that the players aren't interested. For a team that was a win away from a second World Series in three years, the fact that nobody wants to play there which speaks volumes about how much concern there is on the potential sanctions. I wonder if MLB actually would enforce a postseason ban.
  6. Nats: We just won the World Series, gave Strasburg $245 million and are highly active on the market Braves: We won the division last year, signed a bunch of good relievers and are active in pursuing a frontline starter and bat Phillies: We're trying to get over the hump by spending big money on a manager, giving Wheeler $118 million, signed Didi, and are still in on the big name 3B in free agency and trade Mets: We need to clear salary if we want to trade for Starling Marte or sign a reliever
  7. MLB released their sponsored scientific study on if the balls were being juiced or not in recent times. To no surprise, the study claimed MLB wasn't purposely juicing the balls.
  8. Yeah, I mean it's tough for me to think a 34 year old pitcher is going to turn down a 5-year, $180 million deal but you never know what the market will look like by then.
  9. With yesterday's loss, Eli Manning has now fallen to a sub-.500 record in his career along with being 10-21 all time against the Eagles. The MNF crew were talking about how he's still a no doubt HOFer and I just don't see it. I'll always be thankful for the rings, but the number of times in his career where he felt like a legitimate top tier QB are low. He's had a few years where he felt solidly in the top 10, never in the top 5. He gets credit for being able to stay on the field, look at how quick Daniel Jones and other young QBs got hurt. At the same time, loads of QBs nowadays could've racked up those same numbers if their teams gave them a 15 year leash despite the team's results. The older writers who vote will still probably lobby for him because they believe the rings are enough. But there are more and more younger, analytical voters joining the panel and I just don't see him having enough support by the time he's eligible. I could see him being a yearly finalist though, would love to be a fly on the wall for those debates.
  10. With games against Miami and Washington still on the docket, this was a must-lose for the Giants. They did not disappoint.
  11. Second half has gone as expected. The Giants are incapable of putting away the Eagles and have been for the better part of a decade.
  12. Man, deGrom’s 5-year, $137.5 million contract last spring was such a steal.
  13. Ted Simmons and Marvin Miller elected to the Hall of Fame.
  14. Saints have had some very blatant, legit penalties called against them but after last year their fans go ballistic over every call. Everything is a screwjob against them It’s making me want to root against New Orleans by default.
  15. Oh god, we're so close to 2000-born players entering the league.
  16. Kellen Moore will get the Cowboys head coach job and Plubby will get a job as his personal footstool or something.
  17. The Steinbrenners have apparently given Cashman a blank check to do whatever it takes to get Cole. If he isn't a Yankee next season, it won't be because they got outbid.
  18. The Rays' Montreal split season talks have broken down. Rays to remain in St. Pete through 2027.
  19. Reports circulating that billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen has increased his equity stake in the Mets, to fully vest in five years. The Wilpons will remain in control for five more years at which point Cohen will assume 80% control of the team. Did somebody slip me an aphrodisiac?
  20. Yeah apparently Wheeler’s wife is from New Jersey and she wanted to stay close to friends and family. So that was the deciding factor. That said, I think that’s way too much for Wheeler. He’ll pitch to a sub-2 ERA against the Mets because of course he will, but I don’t like his chances over a full season in that bandbox.
  21. The sad thing is the Giants pulled Eli as the starter right as he fell to .500 in his regular season career. As bad as the Eagles have looked recently, the Giants are far worse and haven't beaten the Eagles in years. So now Eli gets to lose to Philly one last time to go below .500 Yet if he manages to pull off an unlikely victory and mess up Philly's season in the process, it'll just fuck up the draft. Total no-win situation for the Giants.
  22. There’s really no reason to have Jones rush back from a high ankle sprain this late in the season. May as well just give Eli the last four games as a farewell tour.
