Not to stir up shit and or controversy, but merely to help those genuinely interested in learning on their own:

Bobinc has a GREAT tutorial on pic cutting, including links to GIMP, screenshots of exactly what it is thats going on, and some advanced cutting tips for the skilled.

It can be found HERE

And remember, like anything in life that you may suck at, all it takes is a little patients and practice and you'll do just fine. It really is ridiculously easy, even if time consuming.
