Worst Trades in History?

Recommended Posts

I was reading a statbook the other day, and I came across the trade for Lindros from Quebec to Philly. I saw what they got and what other teams had offered.

Calgary offered cash, draft choices, Quebec's choice of MacInnis or Suter plus either Nieuwendyk or Reichel. It went sour when Quebec asked for more.

Chicago's offer was Belfour, Larmer, Steve Smith in a 5 player, 7 pick offer. In return Chicago would get Lindros & three Quebec choices, including Quebec's #1, except Quebec asked for 5 Million cash and Chicago said no.

Toronto had the cash, but not the players. Their offer included Felix Potvin, Wendal Clark, Dave Ellet, Berube multpile #1 picks and $15 million. Toronto would not include Gilmour, which killed the deal.

The Rangers offer Kovalev, Weight, Amonte, Vanbiesbrouck (James Patick would be substitued if Vanbiesbrouck a free agent refused to sign in Quebec), #1 picks in 93, 94 & 96, plus $12 million.

And Finally Quebec settled on Ricci, Hextall, Duchesne, Forsberg, Huffman, 7th overall pick in 92 & the #1 pick in 1993, as well as $15 million.

For one player who's never been a 50 goal scorer, only had 1 100+ point season in his career, sure he had 2 90 point seasons, but after that never hit 80 points. Hindsight being 20/20 Philly got hosed.

So what were some of the worst trades in history, for any sport?

Cowboys/Vikings .....

The Cowboys gave up Walker for picks that landed them Russell Maryland, Darrin Woodsan, and Emmitt Smith. Those are the players picked with the draft choices from Minny.

Minny got an average back out of the deal. Sure, it looked like Hershel was going to explode, or at least continue to be a great back. He didn't do shit. The Cowboys got the all time leading rusher in the nfl and three Super Bowls out of the deal.

Seriously, they gave up 12 picks and six players ..... for Herschel. Walker ended up back in Cowboy Blue five years later and helped them beat Minnesota in a playoff game 40-15.

Saints/Dolphins

You then have the reverse of that. Ricky Williams gets dealt to Miami for virtually an entire draft. While eventually being a doof, Williams was highly productive and one of the best backs in the league at Miami. The Aint's ....... uh yeah

Kings/Oilers

The great one, McSorely and another guy to the Kings for .......... nothing. Like three picks, some players, and cash.

January 10, 1991 – The Baltimore Orioles trade pitchers Curt Schilling, Pete Harnisch and outfielder Steve Finley to the Houston Astros for First Baseman Glenn Davis.

August 30, 1990 – The Boston Red Sox trade first baseman Jeff Bagwell to the Houston Astros for pitcher Larry Andersen.

July 31, 1997 – The Seattle Mariners trade pitcher Derek Lowe and catcher Jason Varitek to the Boston Red Sox for closer Heathcliff Slocumb

June 15, 1964 – The Chicago Cubs trade outfielder Lou Brock, pitchers Jack Spring and Paul Toth to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitchers Ernie Broglio, Bobby Shantz and outfielder Doug Clemens.

August 12, 1987 – The Detroit Tigers trade pitcher John Smoltz to the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Doyle Alexander.

July 31, 1998 – The Houston Astros trade pitchers Freddy Garcia, John Halama and infielder Carlos Guillen to the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Randy Johnson.

December 10, 1971 – The New York Mets trade pitchers Nolan Ryan, Don Rose, catcher Frank Estrada, and outfielder Leroy Stanton to the California Angels for shortstop Jim Fregosi.

November 18, 1997 – The Tampa Bay Devil Rays trade outfielder Bobby Abreu to the Philadelphia Phillies for shortstop Kevin Stocker.

November 13, 2003 – The San Francisco Giants trade pitchers Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano, and Boof Bonser to Twins for A.J. Pierzynski

January 3, 1920 – The Boston Red Sox trade Pitcher/Outfielder George Herman Ruth to the New York Yankees for Cash.

I think we all know how that went for Boston…

July 30, 2004 – The New York Mets trade pitcher Scott Kazmir and infielder Jose Diaz to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for Bartolome Fortunato and Victor Zambrano.

The worst thing that could have happened to the Mets in 2004 was them winning. The team clearly wasn’t there yet and wasn’t about to make a run. Instead, they traded Kazmir, who they deemed to be too small to be a starting pitcher for Zambrano. Zambrano has been average at best while Kazmir has become the ace the Mets sorely needed….except for the fact that he’s doing it with Tampa.

Now a few more from Football

Favre, Iron Man of the NFL with over 50,000 passing yards to his name, was originally drafted in the second round of the 1991 Draft by Atlanta. After a less than stellar rookie season as a third-stringer (0 for 5 passing with two interceptions), which included repeated clashes with head coach Jerry Glanville, Favre was traded to the Packers for a first-round draft pick (17th overall) in the '92 draft.

Brian Leetch to the Maple Leafs for Maxim Kondratiev, Jarkko Immonen, a 1st round selection (later traded to Calgary - Calgary selected Kris Chucko) in 2004 and a 2nd round selection (Michael Sauer) in 2005

Kondratiev was later traded to the Ducks for that debacle known as Sandis Ozolinsh, and Immonen is slowly making strides on the Rangers roster, which is truly yet to be seen if he will truly be the offensive presence that everyone says he is.

All in all, how dare Glen Sather get rid of the heart and soul of the New York Rangers, how dare he. Even though the Rangers finally made the playoffs last season, I still feel bitter at Sather for getting rid of Leetch.

But they did make the playoffs.

LMAO ... you just copy and pasted two things from google. Nice.

Not all of them are Monumentally bad though. Sure, the Farve one ended up horridly, but at the time of the trade, it wasn't horrid. It made plenty of sense. They got a draft pick for a running back (which they needed at the time).

Many of those trades up there show players that ended up as great, but didn't necessarily have that tag at the time.

Guest Mr. Potato Head

Toronto trades 1B Fred McGriff and SS Tony Fernandez to San Diego for 2B Roberto Alomar and OF Joe Carter (well, ok, the BEST trade in Blue Jays history)

Montreal Canadiens traded Patrick Roy and Mike Keane to the Colorado Avalanche for Andrei Kovalenko, Martin Rucinsky and Jocelyn Thibault (forcing Montreal into years of mediocrity and giving their formal archrivals a dynasty)

ESPN trades Al Michaels to NBC for the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
